Why Angelus Sucked in this Season

So, I just finished Watching BtVS Season 2 after watching AtS Season 4.

There were A LOT of things wrong with the latter but none sticks out so plainly now as Angelus' portrayal.

This is just a few general questions to the posters here.

1. Do you think Angelus was just as good in this season?

2. If not, why? Was there anything in paricular you disliked about how he was here?

I'll start then I guess.

1. No. Definitely not.

2. The problem for me is that...Angelus is funny in AtS. Now you can find a villain amusing but it's not supposed to be in a ha-ha way generally.

For instance, a quick comparison.

Buffy: (teary-eyed) I love you.

Angelus: Love you too. I'll call you.


vs.

Angelus: Uh-oh. Vampire with a gun.

The first quote is funny when you hear it just because of the way he says it. However at the same time you laugh, you feel sick inside for laughing at his cruelty.
That's the key. Angelus is utterly despicable but in such n evil way that it's humorous.

The second quote is just funny. It's not comical because of how malicious Angelus is. It's just a whacky line.

That's the problem I have with AtS Angelus. He's far more over-the-top. Yet he's not nearly as threatening.

So, how about you all?

I love Angel in both Buffy and Angel (while I only like Angel in his own show).

Angelus remembered loving Buffy, so that's what made him so cruel and vicious.
But he said in Ats some mean things that made me smile too. Can't remember like that. It was with Weasley I think.
I think he's just as great in both show, it's just that in Buffy he was seeking revenge and destruction and in Ats, he just wants to mess up with everyone's mind.

Well with the meaning you put into suck I just can't agree. If you compare the two versions there sure is clear differences but I actually like Ats better. In general, if you pick out certain scenes Btvs Angelus surely will "win" his fair share too.

Did he even manage to kill or seriously hurt a person?

He beat Faith because she let him. And backstabbed The Beast. That's about it really.

Then we travel into his and Angel's minds and all he does is whine and complain.

Yeah, he was less dangerous in Ats. But still vicious. Maybe even more. I'm still disturbed by the way he talked about "raping Fred hard" with his crazy look. Brr.
 
Ok, I'll admit that I prefer Btvs Angelus mainly because of his subtlety.

The things about Angelus humour, unlike souless Spike, it's supposed to have a purpose. Angel(us) is an introvert and introverts interactions are meaningful. That means with Angelus his connections with others are more or less reserved for causing pain to individual. All of this aside from Darla who was the only one who Angelus indulged ( he played to her masochism)

One can fanwak that the Angel at that point was more out of himself and therefore Angelus was more extroverted. Like Angel connects more, it was same with Angelus.

All of this said, he was genuinely creepy in the cage, but Wesley was prepared. He was impotent in Season 4 and that's what made him desperate. He was more confident in Season 2 of Btvs, because he had more control.
 
Angelus was awesome in this season. IMO he and Faith MADE season 4 (and Faith). If these two didn't return season 4 is pretty much skippable.

This thread is kind of pointless because mostly everybody loves Angelus.
 
I didn't think he sucked...but he didn't seem as vicious as his legend makes him out to be. He was cool, cocky & comical, though, so I did enjoy watching him. I'm relatively new to Angel A Angelus. I need to take time to watch him in Buffy so I can better compare. I just imagined that as ruthless (he killed babies) as he appeared to be, he would've killed Fred & Cordy w/out hesitation & waited to massacre the rest of the crew. Of course, that would've been the end of the series!

Wow when I first read the title of the thread I was like whaat? beacuse I loved Angelus in the fourth season, but then I read your whole comment and I totally agree, don't get me wrong I still love Angelus in Ats but he doesn't have the same edge as in season 2 on Btvs. Kind of like Spike, he was great on Btvs but in Ats season 5 he was just a clown "You're a blooody puppet!" ..

 
He didn't suck. He's just not as awesome as in BtVS season 2. I agree with Kana that he's creepy in the cage. But after that I'm not sure. He's not sarcastic anymore. And lol he said "Come kiss my vampire's ass!". That's rather embarrassing for the great Angelus. ^_^
 
In the scenes with Faith/Angelus/Angel in the alley in Chicago that the understanding of the Angelus/Angel balance changed. Up until that point it seemed that it was one psyche ruled while the other was dormant, but then the two psyches meet and fight. The idea is floated through the season that Angelus is inside Angel, particularly as Connor tries to understand his father, and when Faith says the opposite to Angelus - that he is inside Angel - Angelus really stops to think about that.

I'm wondering whether all that work Darla did trying to bring out Angelus, with Angel drinking Connor's blood etc, forced some kind of deeper integration. Did anyone notice Angel acting more Angelus-ish in season 4?

This is because of circumstance. In BtvS Angelus was the bad guy, he was the one calling all shots and tormenting people but in AtS its clear to Angelus from the first moment that he was brought there specifically to give them information about the big rock demon/master. Angelus had history with this rock demon and that was his priority...
 
I thought Angelus was awesome in Season 4. I was very glad that he was present for a few episodes. He made the season better.

I personally liked him better in s4 than s2 of Buffy.
 
While he was in the cage, he was awesome. Very ruthless & cruel. Outside the cage, his dialogue suffered, although the fight scenes were still bad-ass. I'm not sure why the writers couldn't carry over that feeling after he escaped. And yes, someone said Angelus on Buffy was more subtle- I completely agree. Still loved him though!

I'd agree with this. I don't have a problem with Angelus in Ats but I prefer Angelus in Bts, simply because I felt that the threat of Angelus was a lot more real in S2 of Buffy. Angelus was good in Ats and all, but it just kinda happened amidst a bit of a mess of a season if I'm being honest. There was less of an edge to it, but Angelus/Faith was head and shoulders the highlight of the season
 
I think the difference between season 2 of buffy and season 4 of angel is his main objective. In season 2, his main objective was to systematically destroy Buffy on all levels. The more emotional the pain the better. He really wanted Buffy to suffer so he was real sadistic in that regard. With Angel Investigations he tweaked it to turn the team against themselves. Finally with faith the most sadistic thing he could do to her was beat her down. Faith has always about the strength more than the friends. All about the slayage. What greater pain than to know that Faith can't help her only friend come back because she physically can't beat Angelus? His taunting only made it worse.

I think that's what makes Angelus most sadistic. He determines the best way to bring someone down and relentlessly uses it. Which is why he talks so much during any fight he has, to take people off their game.
