Ugh West Wing. Yet another show about politicians. That's television at it's best. Design a show about politicians, doctors, laywers and mobsters and you are sure to get decent ratings, because frankly, it is somehow more respectable to make a show about maybe 1% of the population and call it 'normal life'. I'm sickened by the predicatability of television.
There are a few things that keep Angel from being extremely high in ratings. First of all, suspension of disbelief is not something older generations find themselves able to do. If you think Baby Boomers are bad at it, compare them to generations in the 1800's. Culturally, Suspension of Disbelief is a socially acceptable only in recent generations, who grew up with video games, Sci-Fi shows and 1000's of Sci-fi/fantasy titles in the bookstore. To a Baby Boomer, the genre was initially limited to shows like "Attack of the Killer Tomatos" and "Nerds from outer Space" or what have you..
Secondly, the description of the show seems very silly until you actually watch it. I initially had no intrest in seeing a show about vampires until I watched one episode just for kicks, and was amazed by the depth of the characters. Many people would never consider watching the show unless they knew it was a quality show from the outset. Good reviews and such really help here, and the problem is that many reviewers are in the older generation category as described above. I expect to see a massive revolution in television in the next 20 years, as the 'Angel' Generation takes more and more of these kinds of critic jobs.
Thirdly, the storylines ofAngel have been quite stagnant lately, centering around the central theme of moster-hunters who operate from a static home base (the hotel). This is going to change. Joss has stated that he has a ton of ideas on how to shake things up, and bring in a larger fan base than the traditional Buffy/Angel fans. He is currently talking over the details with the people that sign the cheques. I won't go into any spoilerish details here, but I'm really looking forward to season 5 and 6, which should bring the show to new heights. Currently season 5 and 6 are considered a 95% certainty at this point - on one network or another.
