Why aren't Buffy fans loyal enough as Veronica Mars fans?

How come we don't have a movie like the Veronica Mars fans are getting next year? I mean

1): Buffy is more popular
2): actually made an impact on how movies & tv shows of this generation are
3): it was compared to Buffy when it first aired

So why not a movie? How I Met Your Mother sucks so Idky Alyson Hannigan is even on that god awful show, SMG's new show with Robin Williams looks like it'll only last a season like Ringer did.

They might as well do a Buffy reunion, 89% of the cast are irrelevant minus Alyson Hannigan, Eliza Dushku, David Boreanaz, and Michelle Trachtenberg.

Sorry if I seem bitter. But I'm just angry that Veronica Mars is getting a movie, and Buffy isn't.

Buffy has alread had a movie.

Joss and the cast aren't interested in doing more episodes or a movie.

They do the occassional reunion, earn a few bucks from merchandising, re-run fees and are quite happy with their lot in life.

Buffy the series and I'm sad to say it, Buffy the movie are dead in the water - no hope in hell of them being resurrected (God, I hope I get to eat my words).

Veronica Mars lasted 3 seasons and was canceled with stories left to tell, Buffy had 7 seasons and knew the end was coming so wrapped up it's stories, it also continued in comics.

Veronica Mars has a movie the same reason Firefly got a movie, the cast really like each other and wanted to get a movie made. The Buffy cast dont really seem to be friends (as a whole)

Why aren't they making a Buffy movie? Because there's nobody who will make one. Joss Whedon is busy, and most of the cast is busy, and I don't even know if they would want to make a Buffy movie.
The Veronica Mars movie was made possible by crowd funding, yes. But the project was started by the creator of the show, Rob Thomas, and Kristen Bell. Unless Joss Whedon and some of the cast have the time and wish to make a Buffy movie, there won't be one, no matter how loyal the fans are.

But honestly, I'd rather want to see another Firefly movie.

The Whedonverse have some of the best fans in the world - I mean, there are still conventions dedicated to those shows still being run, despite them ending more than ten years ago. The fact that there hasn't been any mention of a movie or anything has nothing to do with the fans.

The fact of the matter is, the cast doesn't want to continue with these shows. David Boreanaz has stated that he'll never do a movie. James Marsters said that he'd only do a movie if it happened within five years of AtS ending, otherwise he'd be too old to play a character who doesn't age. Sarah Michelle Gellar had, at one point, refused to talk about Buffy at all in interviews, though that has changed in recent years.

And Joss himself has shown nothing to suggest he wants to do anything with BtVS beyond the comics.

Blaming the fans for the show not having a movie is just plain wrong, in my opinion. Yes, Veronica Mars had a Kickstarter campaign to ask the fans to raise money for a movie, but the thing you have to remember about that is that the Kickstarter was started by the creator of the show himself and wasn't even made public until all, if not most, of the cast had signed on and agreed to do it.

Yes, we'd ALL love a BtVS movie or something set in this verse, but none of the actors wants to do it. It's as simple as that.

I believe the correct question should be Why isn't the Buffy cast loyal enough as the Veronica Mars cast?

If it were up to the fans, there would've been a Buffy movie long before the VM movie campaign [or two, or three...]

Buffy fans are legendary in fandom for their passion and commitment to this verse, the creative team and our cast. But the fact of the matter is, all the money in the world will not make an unwilling creative team produce a film. Never, in the history of our fandom, has any of the writers or the cast expressed a desire to see the story return to the screen. That's the shitty reality of it. We aren't the problem here. Not even close.

Exactly what others have said, it's not the fans that are the problem. In fact, we have one of the biggest fandom in comparison to the age of the show. How many shows from the late 90s early 20s are still talked about as frequently as Buffy? This verse has already survived 20 years (from the first movie), I'm sure it's going to be kept alive for many years to come, whether it's comics, books, movies, it has already proven that it does well. If the cast was up for a movie, you can be dam sure that it would be made in a heartbeat, but that's not the case.

I honestly think it's 100% SMG, and she's perfectly entitled to choose to stay away from the franchise. Just look at Christian Bale, he currently says he won't return to the Batman role, and I'd guarantee there are a lot more disappointed fans, and money on the line there than here.

Personally, the only thing I believe could be done is an animated continuation, which Joss attempted, but the networks rejected. Considering the success of Bruce Timm's animated Batman/Superman DVD franchise, I do think if Joss pursued that route he could do quite well.

If you're looking for a fan campaign, petitioning Joss to adapt his recent book seasons into animated DVDs would be the only realistic outlet. David Boreanaz & James Marsters have already starred in Timm's animated DVDs; Marsters' grossed almost $10m on a shoestring budget!

The caveat is there's almost no chance SMG would return to the role, she turned Joss down when he filmed the now-rejected animated pilot they made a few years ago, and he replaced her with someone else--which is obviously less noticeable when it's just her voice.

Personally, I think you could get almost everyone else in that format since in Bruce Timm's animated DVDs, many of the Buffy stars are already involved in Timm's 'verse:

James Marsters (Spike) - Lex Luthor
Eliza Dushku (Faith) - Catwoman
Alexis Denisof (Wesley) - Mirror Master
Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn) - Jonah Hex's Barmaid

I'm not sure very many of us would be happy with a live action movie, as it would probably come across as cashing in on the current sparkling vampire movie craze and would be pretty hard to hide the fact that Spike has aged etc.


On the other hand, an animated movie with a bit of a "monster of the week" mini-apocalypse feel that doesn't affect the timeline of the show would be a movie doing its own unique thing, that is, a movie much darker than the actual TV animated Buffy series(darker as in, more like the atmosphere in Ghost in the Shell and Titan AE) in which case it could be exactly what the franchise needs, without seeming to be riding the waves of what other vampire movies are doing.

If they set it during the late high school years when the greatest majority of the cast was on the show, late Season 2 to 3, and maybe even have a bit of time travel to Angel the series to pick up Gunn, and while they're at it, enter the Fray timeline, well that would be just perfect in my view.

You know a stand alone story, much like "I will remember you", in which it does not affect the rest of the show at all, and pretty much everyone is left without any memory of the events every happening.

Adapting some of the story from the dark atmosphered "The Gatekeeper Trilogy" and season 1 episode "Nightmares" might work, you know portals opening up into hell dimensions, slowly and funnily at first, but then more and more frequently with the ever present threat that if it continues, reality itself might come apart at the seams, with the team trying to frantically find out how and why it is happening, and then going on an attempt to smash the person or machine doing it and put everything back in its rightful place?

By the way, just to reply to something that was mentioned by "Buffyverse Fan", although Sarah Michelle Gellar previously did not show the greatest enthusiasm about buffy during interviews and in the TV animated series.

She is on record of recently saying something to the effect of - "show me a good script, and I'm there".

I wonder if that includes my above sketch of time portals opening up all over the place to different times, in which case, who could resist writing a scene where season 2-3 Buffy encounters her future season 9 self? lol.

Sarah has said in the past that Buffy is best shown as a story arc over a number of seasons rather than a movie because the show is all about character development which is usually spread out in time. The original movie still exists and it was not all that great. In terms of studio interest, the Buffy ship has sailed and you can't get on it now.

It would be nice if a popular series could continue forever with fresh stories, but Buffy was getting stale by Season 7. Angel could have gone another year, but that was a niche program for those who couldn't get enough of the Buffyverse. I don't know of any Angel fans who were not Buffy fans to begin with.

The only reason that Angel didn't come back...it's a very simple thing. Because our ratings were up, because of our critical attention, Joss specifically asked Jordan Levin, who was the head of The WB at the time, to give us an early pick-up because every year they [would] wait so long to give Angel a pick-up [and] a lot of us [would] turn down jobs hoping that Angel will continue"“ he [Joss] didn't want that to happen. So, he was feeling very confident and he [Joss] just asked Jordan, "Like, make your decision now whether you're going to pick us up or not," and Jordan, sort of with his hands tied, with his back up against the wall, called him the next day and said, "Okay, we're cancelling you." I've never subscribed to the belief system that if someone doesn't get something (in this case a Buffy movie) then no one else should get that something (a Veronica Mars movie) either. Never made sense to me.

And this is obviously just personal opinion, but Veronica Mars is freaking amazing, and to be totally honest, a better written show than BTVS. If it had gone seven seasons, I would probably like it more than Buffy.
