Why can they suddenly talk to each other mentally?

Why is it that suddenly in Showtime (at least I think its showtime...) can Willow, Buffy and Xander talk to eachother mentally. Did I miss something, cause im confused, maybe I have missed something but still I would like to know.

Outside of writing failure, which never happens 🙂 , or xander stealing government minie mikes which are not shown, Ed's right on. It is the only plausible explanation. Maybe we can flesh it out a little more, too.

Maybe Buffy has some left over uber power from 'earshot' or when she had that ability it 'strengthened' her mind enough as far as psychic powers go that she can initiate a conversation with someone receptive and capable like Willow, but someone like Xander or a non-psychic could not?

If it was always on/without filter, and always open, I'd imagine it would drive Willow crazy, like it would Buffy in Earshot, or at the very least bother her.

Who knows maybe it did?
 
I think EB's right about Willow being pretty much always receptive to a knock on the door. She probably taught Buffy how to do it effectively too. It didn't seem all that strange to me.
 
Agree with EB, but I always wondered why they didn't use the ability more. I mean, it's pretty useful. 😉
 
^ I think I remember Joss mentioning somewhere that it would have made things too easy, so they conveniently "forgot" that Willow had the ability until they really needed it.
 
So, we're assuming that Willow was transferring all of Buffy's thoughts to Xander and Xander's thoughts to Buffy? Because it's not like they could talk to each other...
 
With a little imagination I find plot holes great fun to try and defend. I think Ed more than makes a credible, thought out defense of it. I buy the explanation, anyway.

Not saying thats what the writers intended or that they did not screw up, only they know that. To me it does not matter because it is not a glaring error of indisputable impossibility and it can be explained away with some mental exercise.

Yes, it'd all have to go through Willow.

I'd assume there's a difference between directed thought, surface thought, and subconcious thought. Buffy was picking up the surface thought in earshot, but Willow seemed to only get thought directed specifically at her, or someone she was relaying to. The more you think about it, the more remarkable the power is, actually. It's no wonder Joss dropped it for so long.
 
Actually, this comes up first in "The Gift" when Willow is mentally talking to Spike. It's never really explained. I guess we're just sopposed to assume it happened somewhere along the way.

Nice catch, how come in earshot buffy cant 'read' Angels thoughts but evidentally Willow can with Spike? The powers must be different enough, I guess..
Maybe the more they directed thoughts at Willow and the more she read them/ head talked, the easier it was for her to read them willingly and after awhile it would become so second nature that she would pick up on their outside indirect thoughts, too.

Maybe she worried that much like anything else, the more she would do it the easier it would become and she could eventually suffer a bad side effect from it by being too much intune with her friends thoughts, public and private.

Having the rest of the core four yammerings in your head would not drive you as crazy as everyone doing so, like in earshot. It could possibly complicate and harm their relationship though.

Maybe she does not use it all that much because she keyed into that spiderman speech of:

'With great power comes great personal gain....err....responsibility.'
And she did not want to risk her friends as part of that (magic addicted or not)

just some imagination use and yammerings on my part, nothing concrete.

That has already been stated that it was used in The Gift.

I think its not unreasonable to think its something Willow picked up while scowering the books to help Tara.

Remember that she was looking into the mind itself.

I really don't see a plot hole here, all I see is the writers not giving a full explanation, probably hoping we'd be able to put a few dots together and work out its not a big deal.
