TV show wise, why did Aly and David see the most success post Buffy and Angel?

Bones and HIMYM while The Crazy Ones and Ringer flopped. Nicholas Brendon was also pretty successful in Criminal Minds. He was a regular on that for a short time

I think the reason is because they got to work on bigger networks with a bigger audience and explosure.

It depends what you mean by success though, because in terms of legecy their characters from the Buffyverse will far outlast their post Angel/Buffy characters.

Will they though? In David's case having played Booth for 10 years, people may well know him more for that now than from being Angel. Sarah I think will always be known more for Buffy than anything else.

Right, wrong or indifferent when I think of AH I think of American Pie.

But I think sometimes you have to separate what is successful because of the exposure and viewing figures it receives and what has a more respectable following and is constantly talked about, and is followed with a passion. The success of something like Bones IMO is mostly because its just an easy watch which ticks the boxes for a certain audience, but doesn't do much outside of that, and I can't think people come away from it having in-depth conversations or being blow away by the acting. I could be wrong, but I don't think that's the case.

AH is always very watchable and a talented comedian but in the case of the American Pie films or HIMYM she is just one part of a very functional and successful machine. I don't think she has that distinctness like the Willow character in Buffy.

Well, honestly Bones and HIMYM are both better shows than The Crazy Ones and Ringer. Better plot, better writing, better supporting cast, better long term plans. Being lucky (smart and talented too) enough to get cast of a good show like that really made for solid careers.

I always got the feeling that SMG kinda intentionally took a step back after Buffy.

But that's because as the lead of Buffy and having perfected the part so well then she has been typecast and struggled to get out good parts. She's just as talented as Alyson and David for me.

I agree. She just so wanted to get rid of her Buffy spotlight that she didn't rush into any jobs and took jobs that were as different from Buffy as she could get rather than look for quality roles
That's insulting to say Sarah Michelle Gellar is just as talented as Alyson Hannigan. SMG could act circles around her and still have talent left over.

Your opinion. I've said it many times I think they are the two finest all Rounders on Buffy. Yes Aylson may do mostly comedy, but if you look at the episodes where she does get to emotion such as Wild at Heart they are some of the most heart breaking of the whole show, and I think she has a lot of subtle facial expressions and movements etc..

Bit actors on Buffy/Angel tend to have done better than cast memebers.

Nathan Fillion- Slither, Serenity, Castle.
Jeremy Renner- The Hurt Locker, Avengers.

Out of actual cast memebers I'd say Amy Acker. Non-stop work on a variety of different shows (Alias, Suits, AoS, Person Of Interest, ) takes more talent that getting cast in a long-running mediocre one. And yeah, that would be a dig at Bones. (heh, bones pun)

Think your right. The Renner example just shows how much the acting business can be about luck.

I can see Acker going on to have a very good career indeed, hope I just didn't just put the jyix on her😀

Who was Renner on Buffy/Angel?

I agree with Amy Acker. She seems to be doing well for herself consistently, regardless of show. I'm not saying AH and DB aren't successful, but I think that's part talent, part sheer luck of getting a show that hit it big. Like what has Alyson done since HIMYM? And there's a reason why DB is still on Bones 10 years later...

Penn from Angel S1.

He was the vampire who Angel had originally trained and who came back to find him. Was his name Kane? Forget now.

But to be fair HIMYM has only recently finished, its a bit early to be saying, what have you've done since?

Ooooooh, was it Penn?

I don't think so. In TV time it's been ages. But then I think that AH is an acquired taste so I'm just generally skeptic about what else she'll do. (Sorry Willow fans, I do like Willow - at least season 1-4 - but I'm no Alyson Hannigan fan)

No I thought she was good in 5 and 6 too for the most part.
Yeah it was Penn.

Well as long as you're a Willow fan I guess we can forgive you😀

Only season 1-4 though, that's as far as I'll go :P
Vincent Kartheiser has been fairly successful since AtS. One of the main characters in a multi-award winning (now finished) show. I'd class VK as most successful so far. As well as Danny Strong.

But VK was never on Buffy... Angel had a ton of successful people.. I thought this thread was just about Buffy as it states.

I would have to say that David and Alyson are more successful than their fellow Buffyverse stars simply because they had the talent and good luck to be cast as characters on long lasting shows. Certainly, they are talented, professional actors, but it must be noted that both shows are basically ensemble presentations, and they owe quite a bit of that success to the skill and professionalism of the rest of the casts of their respective shows.

As for why Sara might not seem as successful as either of them, I think that a lot of that might be at least partially because she became so identified with the character of Buffy that it was hard to find a role of a different type. In other words, Sarah did such a good job playing Buffy that people had trouble imagining her as anything else.

I still disagree with that. She could have easily found other roles, but in her own words, she did not want to leave LA. So that cuts down the roles she could have. She was successful enough to NOT have to work unless she wanted to; and unless it was where she wanted to work.

Well they just happened to land on shows that were a bit different even in their genres and had a great supporting cast. Being on a big network helps and they've not done much outside of those shows. AH has the American Pie movies though, which I love her in. David is either known as Angel or Booth (from Bones). Eliza had two shows with Fox that didn't make it, I really liked Ringer and The Crazy Ones though. Nicky has had personal problems. Tony Head pops up in things from time to time. Not sure about why Emma, James or Amber haven't had more success in terms of either popular shows or movies.

A combination of superior writing, a better network, higher ratings, a good supporting cast, and a whole lotta luck. Though to be fair, neither has done anything of note outside of Buffy/Angel and Bones/HIMYM (with the exception of Alyson's role in the American Pie series).
