Why did Faith dress like a prostitute?

Was it just me or was her leather, pvc, red tight trousers and revealing tops scream dark alley prostitute? She could have toned it down a bit, i just think it was too much. It also didn't help that Buffy looked like she was dressed for church half the time. I know they where supposed to be opposites, but what do you think on Faith's prostitute look. I think she would have been just as tragic, thrilling and wild even if she was dressed more like Buffy. Infact, she may have even packed more of a punch.

Wow that's harsh. I don't think she dressed like a prostitute, I think she was just kind of trashy in her dress and I think it had a lot to do with her background, lack of money and a need to provoke.

It's quite common for people who has suffered abuse to become outwardly provocative in person and clothes because they're giving the world a message that they don't care and that they're just fine on their own. I think Faith was very much like that - she needed to show that she didn't give a damn, she needed to feel sexually desired by men (it's a way to connect, especially when you don't have friends) and she was buying into the 'tough girl' act long before she came to Sunnydale. Simply speaking, leather and cleavage fitted with the persona she had created for herself, the tough girl she wanted to be, in order to hide the scared little girl within.


(agree about Buffy's clothes. They were not good in s3, not to my taste at least and the contrast between her and Faith were sometimes a bit silly)

I don't think she dressed like a prostitute. Faith's wardrobe reflected the fact she was a sexually confident woman, of course she didn't dress like a nun but that was part of the edge of her character

Seriously, the Buffy-Faith contrast was way too heavy-handed and unsubtle, IMO, and the way they dressed was part of that. Plus, ME seem to have a fetish for black leather...

She looked hot. More important, she looked like Faith. I think her dress was perfect, as was her attitude. And I agree with all the serious stuff [MENTION=9799]Taake[/MENTION] said.

Oh, and to get a bit serious, I used to work near a place where prostitutes gathered. Trust me, they don't dress like that and they don't act like that. They are really quite sad. They all looked like they got ran over a truck. That's what meth will do to you. :-(

Honestly, I never thought Faith dressed all that scandalous. We saw some mid-drift frequently but other than that she was usually covered up.

I think the term 'prostitute' is a bit strong, but I agree that she did look quite trashy. I was not a fan of the red lipstick. The contrast was a bit extreme between her and Buffy, it could have been done a bit better had it been understated. But then again, they did something similar with Buffy and Spike in Season 7 and I didn't mind it quite as much.

Definitely agree. When I was thin, I wore a lot of pleather and vinyl pants when I'd go out with my friends. It made me feel sexy and confident in my appearance.

I don't think Faith looked like a prostitute... Even though her clothes may have been tight, she kept herself covered up except for a little cleavage.

I viewed Faith's clothes the way I viewed Faith: oover stated, over done, and over compensating. I don't think she dressed like a prostitute... but she did dress like a slut. (and before anyone jumps on me for that word, I know what it means, I know how strong it is, and I do mean it. I am entitled to my opinion). I have no problem with a woman dressing like they're confident in their sexualities... but Faith was a bit much to me.

I think it was more the attitude of her with the clothing. She was moving a little... stripper like when she was dancing with that outfit. If she wore a different outfit but still with that dancing moving... she would have looked slutty as well. It's not what you wear, it's how you present herself. I think she did want to seem confident. Not only with her body, but also as a Slayer. Clearly her taste in clothes comes from her love for slaying. I always had the feelings she was dressing the way she thought was slayer-like. Cool, confident, fighter. She wanted her clothes to show what she thought of herself, she used her clothes to tell everyone that she's strong and cool. That she's a Slayer.

Slutty? I didn't like the taste, but as I said it was more her attitude that made her seem slutty. But that's what makes her feel good. And she's always looking for ways to feel good. The things she does, she does because she wants to show who she is. She wanted Buffy's life, she wanted to be her, but still Faith. Her clothes never changed. They're a statement of what she wants to present to the world. Faith herself is a little slutty. But if men can why can't women?

How can you be to confident in your sexuality? What was "a bit much" for you?

In my opinion, what doesn't hurt you or anyone else is not a bad thing. Any person should be able to dress however she or he want with out it being anyone elses damn business. If Faith was comfortable and happy with her sexual actions is another thing, but that is not the issue here. The issue is the way she dressed.

It's not the ammount of skin shown... it's the materials and the colors and the outfits. I can see and agree it was more of her attitude than he clothing... but if I saw someone dressed like Faith out in public, I'd think they were sexually promiscious. It's her outfits and ensembles, not the ammount of skin shown.

Lol, you know the more I think about it, with the exception of a few examples I really can't see what would be slutty/prostitute like about Faith's clothes.

There's jeans and tops, sure leather pants (but then Buffy wore those too) and some more cleavage but other than there there's just hoodies, denim and other dark materials. Her first ever outfit is a bit trashy I'll admit and in the dancing scene in Five by Five she wears a revealing top but then again she's clubbing so...

Her make up is more vampy/slutty to me than anything she's worn. And I agree what has been said about demeanor, I think that more than her wardrobe is responsible for her here mentioned "slut" label.
