Why did FX Network censor Buffy a lot?

There were certain scenes from Season 5/Season 6, that were edited or censored

for example a lot of scenes from "once more with feeling" were edited. And in "The Gift" when Buffy and Giles are in the Magic Shop

when Buffy says "WE'RE BLOODY WELL TALKING ABOUT THIS!" they edit that part out

My best guess is that at the time it aired Buffy was still a but risque for television. The whole first kiss between Willow and Tara was a HUGE deal back then, whereas now you can see that a dime a dozen on 500 different channels, it is no biggie now. Today you can get away with a lot more. I am sure when our generation is old and our kids are adults what seems risque on television now will be silly to our children.

But this is FX not network TV! Did you see Nip/Tuck? They did some pretty shocking things on that show, "bloody hell" or Spuffy sex would look like cartoon next to that .. If I had to guess I'd say they're not censoring it, they're just editing it to make it shorter so it fits their schedule better ..

Oh I think I misunderstood, I was thinking the question was referring to when the show was still airing, not thinking of the reruns today being censored 🙂
In that case though I agree with you, editing to make it run shorter definitely.

It's common when shows go into syndication for them to be edited, but it rarely has anything to do with inappropriate content. It's simply so that there can be more room for commercials. It's a situation where time is literally money.

The only reason I can think that they censor some stuff is for time reasons; maybe they have too many commercials to air during that time period and have to edit BtVS down.

FX just has an obnoxious amount of commercials. When I watch it on logo or chiller, I've never noticed that anything was cut out...and they seem to have way less commercials on those networks. By the way, when were you watching Buffy on FX? I haven't seen it on that channel in years.

It was back in like 2005 I think

So they have more time to play more commercials. FX has always played a ton of commercials so they edited out a lot of random parts for more money.

Which is one reason I hate watching TV. Anyone else watch The Voice or anything else on that channel? Oh my god, 3 mins of show, 5 mins of commercials. Repeat. It's terrible.

TV channels are3 allowed to air more advertising now than they were back then, so trimming the episodes means more ads, means more revenue, means more profit on the bottom line. Sadly.
