Why did the First never show up as Buffy?

After observing The First in Amends and Season 7, I don't think it was capable of fully mirroring someone's personality. As someone already said, it was insidious: the only thing it could ever do was to manipulate and to prey on someone's doubts and fears. I don't think I've ever seen The First try to properly infiltrate the gang, and the only infiltration that happened was for short term goals (i.e. using the shell of a dead potential to lay the seed of doubt in the other Potentials). It couldn't do the "normal" and more "mundane" interactions. Sooner or later, The First would have been rumbled.

Plus, The First would of had to keep Buffy out of action for a prolonged period to properly infiltrate the gang; it never got that opportunity.
 
Hmm. My issue isn't so much that the First never appeared to the Scoobies as Buffy. I mean, the First didn't do a whole lot of things it should have done. My issue is that the Scoobies never realized the First COULD do that, and they were never suspicious about Buffy's presence. Seems kinda naive and, well, makes the First seem even more dense for not taking advantage of that.

Even Spike was never like, "Hey, are you really Buffy?" *poke* And The First came to him more as Buffy than anyone else! Hmph. Bothered now.

Well I mean I'm sure they thought "Buffy's alive, therefore why would she be The First." I don't think they would have ever considered that she could be and was considered "dead." And they really had no reason to. All they knew was The First could only be dead people and Buffy wasn't dead.
