In Season 6 of Buffy why didn't buffy start something like what Angel did in Los Angeles. She need money to pay off the bills but really didn't have anything that was bringing in the money. Anya mentioned charging but instead of doing that start a business like Angel. But that's still kinda charging but she could always fight evil when it calls for her or if accidently came apond any.

I guess that's a good question...I dunno...but what I always wondered was, why didn't she scare the crap out of various Watchers again and get herself a salary from them? She managed to get Giles reinstated...

I dont think that it would have been cool if they would of had two different shows (buffy and Angel) with the same story line...

The whole point of the 'Buffy drowning in bills' storyline is season six was to show that life is rough when Mom is gone (either dead or you aren't living with her anymore) and you're on your own. Having to take a crappy job just to pay the bills is a fact of life for a lot of people (I've been there) and this was just showing how Buffy dealt with that.

I agree with Pheonixrising....

Plus, they had already used that storyline on Angel. Why double it up to Buffy, when the shows are supposed to be distinctly different.

Yes. Good point. The shows have always prided themselves on being different, so it's a good thing that Buffy didn't take on the same role.

Good point. Plus the Private EYe thing would never have worked in a small town like Sunnydale. That was part of the appeal of BtVS, was the "small town" feel, whereas Angel had that "Big city, no one knows you,.no ones going to help you...Except him." thing.

It was interesting. There seemed at times to be an implicit belief, acceptance that something was up with the town. And the kids gave Buffy that award "Class Protector" or whatever.

I guess they couldn't have explored all the teenage themes in the metaphorical way they did if things weren't "underground", hidden. Would have ended up being like some truly weird sci-fi scenario if the vamps were all out and about and accepted as real by everyone. We saw that weird sci-fi scenario with "The Wish".

Yes, goldenboy! That was definitely one of the best things about Buffy, and then turned the other way, was one of the best things about Angel. Everyone knew that something was weird about Sunnydale. And they just plain never talked about it. And then in LA, everyone knows there's something crazy about LA, but that's mostly just chalked up to it being LA. The "big city" feel really worked for a show like Angel, as well as for his chosen "profession" whereas the small town works better for Buffy. Apparently almost everyone in Sunnydale who comes into contact with Buffy for any length of time knows somehow that if something bad and weird happens, she's the person to go to. (Amanda, Cordelia, the kids in her class, etc etc) That sounds like a small town to me, where men are men, women are women and rumors get around like John Kennedy on the campaign trail.

And that kind of reflects everyday reality as well, right? We all think about philosophical, existential, supernatural questions inwardly, and sometimes even discuss them (like on these boards!). Some people turn to faith to explain disturbing unanswerable things, some just kind of ignore the big questions.

Sometimes you just have to just live life, go about your daily business. If you didn't, you'd probably go nuts.

The Sunnydalites (Sunnydalians?) just wanted to get by, keep going. You block out things that seem unacceptable. Principal Snyder did that all the time.

Those are all some very good points. But I also want to know why Willow, Tara, and even Dawn try to get a job to help pay the bills. They lived in the house too. They should of been chippin something in. And how did Willow and Tara pay for their schooling? The only thing I can think of is that it came from their parents.

Did Principal Snyder really block out all the unacceptable things or did he just simply ignore them? I think that he knew about them.

To talk about Angel's Watchers points:
We know that Giles gave Buffy a check, and you had to think that it was for quite a bit of money. But, yes, we never saw Willow or Tara working, because they were at school or not around. It is very strange.

I do believe that the Watcher's Council should have paid Buffy and any other slayer for that matter. It's apparent that they have vast resources available to them. Plus, it offers a great point for them: If Buffy were to have been financially supported by them, she could spend her time training, patrolling, and slaying instead of working at a fast food restaurant.

Another thing that struck me as odd: I really respect Willow and Tara for helping with Dawn while Buffy was dead, but shouldn't they have helped pay the mortage or some of the bills? Unless they did, and we just know nothing of it.

The Tara and Willow not helping out was probably due to the fact that they were in school. Plus, I don't think that after all they did (took care of Dawn, looked after patrolling), Buffy would have let them help. She was almost reluctant on accepting Giles' cheque, so I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have accepted money from her friends.

'I Only have Eyes For You' makes it quite clear that Snyder knows what's going on. He even says to the police chief that they're living on a Hellmouth. He was hired to keep a lid on the strange things.

I don't think that the fact that they're in school is an excuse. A lot of people work their way through school. And if they don't have to pay the room and board, that's a WHOLE lot of money that Buffy's saving them by letting them stay. But you're probably right about Buffy not letting them help, she probably would have felt like she was accepting charity!

With Principal Snyder, I find it hard to tell what he knew, when he knew it. Yes, he was essentially in cahoots with the Mayor at the end. But remember in Spike's debut ep, Snyder says "that gang, they're on PCP!". Was he just trying to mislead everyone in the school at the time? Can't remember now. He had another conversation with a cop or someone at the very end of the ep. But it's hazy to me.

At any rate, if he really knew all about Sunnydale from the get go, it still seems like he was at least in personal denial about his significance, and just how dangerous things were. He was cursing the Mayor, "I'm in charge here!", something like that"”right before he was eaten.

I agree that Buffy's economic dilemma was fakey in its specifics.

i always wondered this. they tell buffy she's broke but dont help with the bills and stuff. what did they do when buffy was dead? use her mums money? is that why buffy was broke?

Yeah, that's a little odd. So, the finances and bills were bequeathed to Buffy after Joyce's death. Did Dawn have access to Buffy's ATM card after Buffy's death? Emptied all the accounts? Sounds morbid, but how else could they have fooled Social Services, city govt, school? Maybe Giles was chipping in, making the house payments.

Willow probably just hacked into the bank accounts or did a spell or something.

so why couldnt she do a spell when buffy came back?
nah, when joyce died, things would be left to buffy, when she died they used the buffybot. that'll be how they fooled people.

With the whole ATM card/money thing... I'm sure they used BuffyBot... Just assuming really, because they used her for everything else...

And this whole, friends helping out deal... That would totally ruin the point again... With the having to work to support the family... Falling on hard times... It wouldn't have worked as well had they been able to get money easily 🙂
