Why Didn't Darla Get A Soul?

The Gypsies cursed Angelus by restoring his soul due to his killing their "most beloved daughter," so why didn't they curse Darla as well? She, after all, was the one who kidnapped the girl and I have no doubt that she participated in her death, so she actually was more responsible for what happened than Angelus ever was.

You make a very good point and I actually never thought of that. I don't have an exact answer but maybe they felt Angelous was more responsible. Also another thing is maybe they did not know she kidnapped her they could have though it was Angelous all along or something.

That's what I figured, that they thought he worked alone in this instance.

Because Angel would have suffered more by being the only vampire with a soul... hated and feared by both humans and other vampires, and completely alone. As in fact he was, for nearly 100 years.

Plus, he was the one who did the actual killing of the gypsy girl. The spell to restore Angel's soul and add the curse into the mix was presumably a rare and difficult one, so they couldn't just cast it on every vamp they felt like.

There's two logical reasons i can think of. One is that they thought Angelus was solely responsible or that they thought it would be more painful for Angelus if he was alone with a soul. If they had given Darla a soul the two of them could have given comfort to one another which defeats the purpose of what they wanted to do.

I never thought about that, but I agree with AndrewCrossett. With Darla, Angel would have someone who understands his pain.

The fact that the gypsies seemed to have only souled one vampire, and that the good guys of BtVs and Ats didn't try to contact them and ask them to re-do it for Angelus in season 2, and the other vampires of the world, or at least consider to do it, is a huge plothole.

Did the gypsies not care about all the vampires running around, killing people? Could they not re-do the spell? Could they only create that spell for one vampire (maybe they could only curse vampire's who's done uber-evil things towards them?)

We can come up with explanations for it, but this is a issue that really should have been mentioned on the show. Are we to assume that such a powerful gift/weapon as the resoration spell wasn't important enough to deal with on screen?

It always bugged me. It's way up there on the list of Things That Wasn't Dealt With Properly (Jesse, Cordelia's death, the scoobies arguing in late season 7 that needed a make-up scene, etc etc).

Well they did make it seem hard to do in a way...because they've only showed Willow as the one who was powerful enough to restore his soul...its not like all the gypsys could do it..i'm sure it was the Willow of Gypsies..Jenny was gonna try but we don't know if she would of actually got it

In Season 2 Jennys Uncle said that the spell is long lost and that they cant re-do it.

Well they did make it seem hard to do in a way...because they've only showed Willow as the one who was powerful enough to restore his soul...its not like all the gypsys could do it..i'm sure it was the Willow of Gypsies..Jenny was gonna try but we don't know if she would of actually got it

I don't think that Willow was the only person that could have done it. When Willow did it in S2 she was a novice at magick and had only done a few spells. On AtS S4 there was outside interference working against them (the soul being stolen, Jasmi-Cordy upstairs) and they also didn't want to take any chances so they had the last person that restored his soul do it again.

On AtS S4 there was outside interference working against them (the soul being stolen, Jasmi-Cordy upstairs) and they also didn't want to take any chances so they had the last person that restored his soul do it again.

Yeah she was a novice but was also kind of possed by a dark power..plus she obviously had more of a knack for it then anyone else including Giles...The group was going to restore his soul but only because they had it in that orb already..i don't think any of them including Wesley could retrieve his soul otherwise

I never thought about that. You always think of this great stuff I would have never thought of.

Perhaps they just hated Angelus more personally because he killed the gypsy girl, even though it was probobly under Darla's command. Also worth noting is why didn't they curse Spike, as well? He ate a few of theirs as well.

I agree with AC, as well. It makes sense that the spell would be quite difficult, perhaps needing quite a lot of resources to pull it off. Also, if they cursed Darla and Spike as well, Angel would have company, and perhaps it would be easier for him. The gypsies wanted to curse Angel to a life forever tormented and lonely.

Willow was a novice in season 2, when she had no dark power at all. Season 4 is another story.

Well, in the episode "Darla" flashback scene, she and Dru and Spike massacred the whole gypsy tribe that cast the spell... at least everyone in the camp. That might be where it was lost.

Exactly. Wasn't the guy from the Becoming flashback there, the one who explained to Angel he just got his soul back? Maybe the old woman's drained corpse was just out of sight.

Jenny's uncle explained why they didn't do it to every vampire in the world, he didn't come out & say it, but he said what they wanted was vengeance, not justice. & the reason why they chose Angelus over Darla (sure both of them were responsible, & choosing one would make the pain greater) is that Angelus is considered the more dangerous & evil one, even though Darla was older, Angelus was more wicked, Darla said "you were a legend, no other vampire could keep up with you, not even me", he was a celebrity, you can see that in Angel S4, everybody was kissing his ass.
