Why Didn't Darla Go To Hell?

Maybe there was no part of darla that could be sent to hell afterall she didnt have a soul and angel was suked directly into hell and had a soul

so what about the demon part with the humans memories? sure, the person's soul has passed on, but what about the demon's essence???
And also someone said before the First brang Angel back, I don't think the first has the power to or it would have brang back vamps like The Master and Buffy's other foes. The First just claimed to bring Angel back.

First off to the original post: Where in Inside Out does Darla state that she is in hell? Actually she doesn't. She states that she is send by the PTB to help Connor. Her whole appearance and behaviour indicates that she is more likely in some kind of heaven, in peace with herself.

Secondly, when somebody is sired into a vampire, his human soul is set free into some kind of ether (supposedly) and the demon takes its place. That's how Angel or Spike would be able to be re-ensouled, it's common consensus that they got their human souls back and not just any soul. Presuming that vampire demons have no soul of their own, when a vampire is dusted, the demon ceases to exist. The human soul should be sent to hell or heaven based on how the human once used to live, since it had nothing to do with the atrocities the vampire demon executed.

That's why I think that Angel can't be held responsible for his actions as a vampire after he is re-ensouled. But since he remembers everything he has done as his own doing, his conscience makes him feel responsible for his sins as a vampire and therefore he feels his soul is tainted and needs to be redeemed. And that's why he feels that he will go to hell after he dies (Hellbound).

We don't know much about human Darla before she was sired, only that she was a prostitute and an independend woman. We don't actually know if she was a bad person, so maybe when vampire Darla was killed in the BtVS episode Angel her human soul was sent to an appropriate place.

Not worth screwing with your karma for because it's not a complete disagreement. I just want to point out that when Spike was still a psuedo-ghost at Wolfram & Hart and kept fading in and out, when he faded out, he was visiting hell. I know a lot of people think Angel was being overly dramatic or borddy in their conversation in 'Hellbound', but then why is Spike visitng hell? Hell was Spike's destination. Whatever force sends them to the after-life doesn't seem to care that they had no souls when doing evil or even that they became champions after they got them back. Aparently the human soul gets the punishment. Not saying it's fair... but haven't we noticed that the PTB aren't ever really all that fair? I'm still not sure I agree that the demon ceases to exist after passing, but I'm starting to see the logic behind that. Your assesment of the soul in the ether and all of that is perfect in my opinion. All in all just a few parts of your post I disagree with.

Uhm but Spike isn't really visiting hell, he is messed up by Pavayne. Spike only mistakes the *visions* of dead people for a punishment for his life as a vampire, when instead he is *haunted* by the evil spirit of the mass murderer whos body W&H was build upon. When Pavayne threatens to throw him into hell, it's not said that this would have been the natural way for his soul. We don't know where Pavayne would really have sent him, some kind of hell dimension sure, it seems that he sends souls somewhere so he can stay, haunting the place. But that doesn't mean this is the punishment for Spikes soul, meant by the PTB.

And if you disagree, you disagree ... don't worry about karma lol 😉

Since I can't edit my previous post anymore:

I want to add, that my theory on souls and demons is exactley that .. a theory like anybody elses 🙂 But I don't think we can necessarily assume from Hellbound that hell is the place where the vampires humans souls go, because the whole thing is induced by Pavayne, not the most trustworthy person I'd say.

I am actually not sure if the PTB are really responsible for the souls and where they are going. I always considered them more like a counterpart to the Senior Partners, more leaning towards the good and order, while the SP leaning towards evil and chaos, both forces trying to keep a balance, using tools like Angel and Cordy (PTB) or the Circle of the Black Thorn (SP) to influence events.

I always reckoned that there is nobody who actually decides if a soul goes to hell or heaven, it's more like a automatic process, but the PTB and SP are powerful enough to interfere with that process like in To Shanshu In LA, where they forced Darlas soul back from wherever it may have been. So they might also be able to help a soul into heaven (or hell) by influencing the cosmic karma or whatever lol.

Ermm Darla as the first? the powerws sent her to conner to stop him from murdering that girl.
In fact i'd agree to the theory that she ceased to exist so therefore experienced nothing but a dark nothingness...
I friend of mine had a similar experience all he saw was black then the docs managed to get him back...so i guess it depends on individuall eperience also...

Old thread, but I've been watching season 2 dvds (all actually, just going through them in order)...

I'm going to say a Vampire, as a vampire, doesn't go to hell, even if they think they will, frankly because their soul is gone the moment they go vampy. I have to wonder tho, if a person who's soul is taken by something like Vampirism, actually goes anywhere, or if it just sorta goes to limbo or whatever.

The Angel or Spike feeling Hell calling is different, because they've got their souls back.

My feeling is, that a Vampire, despite doing really bad things, isn't any more evil in terms of afterlife stuff, as any other beast or animal.

Frankly, this is one case where I prefer the whole WoD take on vampires. You may be sorta damned, but you have a choice on how much you hold onto humanity or succumb to the beast. The whole "you automatically become completely and unrepentently evil, but also don't have a soul" gets complicated.

I agree with you there. Although I believe that when a person is sired their soul goes to Hell - even if they were a good person. This further proves the idea of damning the person. It's almost like when the Demon takes the body the soul trades places and goes to Hell. Darla only wanted to be re-sired because she was confused and assumed Vampire Darla's memories to be her own. Therefore thinking that they were the same entity and just wanting to be given eternal life again.

However, for a Vampire with a soul it is different. When the soul is lost it is cast out into the ether (It has already had its admission to Hell). It can then be plucked out and restored to the Vampire fairly easily. The Demon meanwhile is bound to the body and when the body is destroyed so is the Demon. This explains why Darla felt nothing after Angel staked her. Actually "Remembered" nothing would be a better term as that technically wasn't Darla. When Drusilla re-sires Darla a second demon is bound to that body but because of Darla's memories and feelings etc. it appears to be the original Vampire Darla. Which in a sense it is. When human Darla dies this time her soul goes to Hell once more (She's traded places with another Demon).

I don't think I'm explaining it correctly. It looks quite complex when writing it down. But that is the theory I except.

Has the show ever brought up what happens to the soul of the person who becomes a vampire? I mean, it's not them who's the vampire, right? It's a demon who just inherits the memories of the former person, so the person is technically dead and their spirit is elsewhere.

But shouldn't the demon within be sent to hell or something?

i don't think the human's soul automatically goes to hell, it wouldn't be fair. i think that it depends on whether the person was good or bad as a human being, and where they deserved to go. The demon that takes over (the vampire) is the evil one, not the person themself, so therefor i don't think they should be judged as a 'vampire'...

hmmmm......

I think the reason Darla didn't go to hell was because technically she had a soul when she died. Remember when Angel said "That's why you've been craving pure blood, because it has a soul." The baby had a soul when she was pregnant so maybe that's why when she steaked herself she did't go to hell. She loved Connor. Who knows...

It was stated in earlier buffy episodes that the demon takes over the body, but doesn't get your soul, that part of you goes to either an infinite heavenly dimensions, or an infinte hell dimensions depending on the persons soul.

^Yes, I believe Giles said that sometime around season one or two of BtVS, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, despite that, I don't think that a persons soul goes automatically to hell when sired. I believe the "eternal torment" that Angel and Darla talked about is in Drusilla's (or any other sired person's) soul knowing that they are leaving behind a monster in their body. Angel's guilt stems from this idea. It wasn't Angel's true self doing the murder, but he still takes responsibility. A soul that is not attatched to a body may not have the memories (as it had already left), but it still feels the responsibility.

It could also be a simple underestimation of the power of good by the Vampires though. Buffy does say "There was no pain, no fear, no doubt..." about a heaven dimension, so a good soul like Drusilla (that was weird to write) wouldn't suffer. A wicked soul in life however, would be tormented by this in hell.
