I've noticed over the years that there are some fans of "Buffy" that dislike or downright hate Spike, going so far as to say that they could see no reason whatsoever for the character being on the show, despite the undeniable fact that, beginning in Season 4 and up to the present, he has been portrayed as moving steadily, if somewhat reluctantly at first, from villain to hero. So, here is your chance, all of you Spike haters, to vent your spleen on Spike. Why do you hate this character so?

I don't hate him, but the backdrop of an immaculate chorus that fandom likes to set him against has ruined my enjoyment of him to an extent. If I had never delved into the show beyond watching it I expect he'd be one of my favorite characters.

Well I thought he was kinda boring once he became a good guy.

I thought he was so much better as a baddy, he was hilarious as the baddy who couldn't do bad things in season 4, but after that total snorefest.

What developed my hate for him, same as Kairos, were all the Spike fans, and how he could do no wrong and all that.

I didn't like that his popularity got him more show time, and hated the stories around him that made other characters stupid (Buffy keeping him in the house in season 7 - soul or no soul he wasn't in control!)

I didn't like that his popularity got him onto Angel, but then did enjoy him more there.

Maybe because he's out for a walk or they think he has stupid hair? 😀 No serious I like him but I understand those who say they liked him better as villain. Personally I prefer the superhero with a bad ass side too!

haha and ditto!
I don't hate Spike, but he isn't one of my favorite characters. In fact he is a character I can tolerate and even enjoy sometimes, if I watch without putting to much thought into it.

The main reasons I don't like his character are 1) I have trouble believing him and his story to be genuine. By that I mean, I believe the intentions and reasoning behind his character change vs. the explanation we are told don't match. I've always wondered how long it will be before Spike finds another female to be so dedicated too. 2) IMO he lives his life without a single thought or action for himself. I grow tired of his need to always one up Angel. I'd like to see him do something that wasn't somehow connected to besting Angel or impressing a female. Sometimes I wonder if Spike even knows himself. 3) He comes at the expense of the Scoobies.

I also agree with what Kairos and BEG said about the way he is painted by fandom; the lengths some go to to explain/excuse away his wrong doings are incredible. I understand and respect that he is a wildly popular character and many people adore him; but Ive always been a little put off by the general "he can do no wrong" attitude I've come across. I know not all Spike fans are guilty of this type of blind loyalty but many are and they tend to be very vocal.

Well, he was loyal to Dru for over a century, even though, apparently, she didn't return the favor.
For me I loved Spike until Seeing Red aired then all was ruined for me for personal reasons, until the very end of s7 then I started to like the character and storylines again. Much preferred him in AtS, but never loved his character again. I don't dislike Spike just don't love him anymore due to the poor handling of Seeing Red. I know Spikettes will argue that Angel did worse but that was not aired so did not effect me personally as much.

This topic was canvassed rather thoroughly last year, in this thread and continued in this one. Having contributed several essay-length posts about why I don't like Spike to those threads, I'd rather not do that again here. The short version is that a) I don't like Spike because he's a rude, reckless, presumptuous, irresponsible whiner who reeks of cigarette smoke and looks like he has Ramen noodles growing out of his head and b) I don't subscribe to his fans' interpretation of his character arc (that he genuinely changed pre-soul because of his so-called love for Buffy) because I find it impossible and highly illogical within the established rules of the Buffyverse.

I don't have any Spike hate, but I definitely preferred him pre-season 5 (other than a couple random eps.) He is way more fun as the Big Bad than Buffy's stalker. I am actually finding myself more annoyed at him during S6 and S7 on this re-watch than I've ever gotten. (A lot of it isn't even just because of him - it's how Buffy constantly gives him a "Get out of jail free" card no matter what he does. It's just stupid.)

I haven't gotten to S5 of AtS yet, but I'm guessing I'll like him more on there.

white avenger: Spike isn't the only one with a "get out of jail free" card, though. Buffy has basically done the same thing with every character on the show, and that "other" vampire more than anyone else. So, why Spike in particular and no one else?

I think it's because it's over and over and over again. And she endangered a lot of other people, including her sister, by doing it. The "other" vampire never really did anything atrocious to Buffy & Co. when he had his soul and wasn't under the influence of anything; when he was evil, Buffy was able to find it in herself to do the right thing and kill him when it needed to be done. She should have killed Spike a looooong time ago (I get why not, and glad she didn't, but...)

I also think it's because Buffy's forgiveness/ignoring what he does isn't from a place of friendship or loyalty like the others were. It's because she was using him and wanted him around. She always talks about how she hates him, how disgusting he is, etc. yet she won't kill him or send him away because she's selfish. Again, in that case, it isn't so much Spike that irks me, it's how Buffy acts around him and treats him.

(Lightbulb moment: Maybe it's because I don't like how him being around makes Buffy act? Hmmm...)

I would NEVER have suggested such a thing. But since you did...

I'm not gonna say it. I'm not gonna say it. I,m not gonna say it. I'm not gonna...
Aw, the hell I'm not!

You're not the only one who's guilty of that particular offense, but at least you've admitted it, so there's hope for you. The next Adopt-A-Bangel meeting is Friday evening. Miss K is the host this month. Beverages are provided, but cookies are always appreciated.

Hey, I never said I was a Bangel! Can't say I'm a Spuffy, either, though .:D
Why do some people love Spike? 😉

Not sure, I guess it's just something about him that rubs me the wrong way as the seasons carry on. Mostly I just think he's incredibly overrated and took up way too much space on the show. I think I would have continued to like Spike had he remained a smaller character! I guess I just didn't find his arc - interesting, convincing or worthy of air time when all is said and done. I know a lot of people do, and clearly the writers did, but after his brief stint in season 3 he mostly bores me to tears. (Exception when he's on Angel and he's a 'smaller' character again and shines in that part)

I don't dislike Spike. I actually like him a lot. What I do dislike is how Spike fans place him on a pedestal; he can do no wrong. I feel confident saying that most of us Angel fans clearly see Angel's faults. For me, acknowledging that makes his character more interesting. But some Spike fans will go as far as defending the AR!!

I liked Spike's development in ATS season 5, & how IDW treated his character in the comics. I'm feeling a bit like DarkHorse/Joss is going backwards with his character development in Buffy season 9. But maybe his miniseries will change that.

Well, I could easily post a very long rant on the subject but for now I will say that Spike's presence in S4-6 simply takes me out of the story. Every time I look at him I can't help but think "What's he doing there? Why isn't he staked? Why does he want to interact with the Scoobies?" His mere presence in S4-6 reflected very badly on Buffy and the Scoobies (this is true about Anya too).

I used to find him annoying, smug, childish, ugly, and creepy. I was very appaled when Buffy and he "got together" in season 6, seeing the pain Buffy was in. And late season 5 had almost made him likeable! I really hated to see Buffy in that low place. Then Spike got a soul, and he wasn't evil anymore, so I started to get over it. Now I love him. I even find the evilness charming and his flaws apart of what makes him such a complex character.

I've changed my mind a lot now, and I can now appreciate him as a person, not just as a annoying bad guy who the good guys treated way too nicely(which I still do, I mean, why let someone live, that's trying over and over again to kill you, while chipped?) It's like I felt the need to be on Buffy's side 100& per cent, and hate his guts, as if it was my own sister he had made feel that way. Then he got a soul, and it was as if it was ok to like him. Even pre-soul him.

Could partly be because I now find him extremely hot. I started watching the show as a child, and couldn't get why people "loved to hate" this "pretty bad boy". I thought he looked kind of funny. Now, quite the opposit.

Season 6 is still gross, largely because of his and Buffy mutual abuse of each other.

I love Spike (from the get-go) so I don't agree with all of your post, but I did feel the need to be on Buffy's side with the disgust. So I felt really confused whether I still liked Spike or not whenever Buffy brushed him off.
white avenger: why friend, whhhhyyyyy?😱

I feel a slight attack of hypertension coming on... 😉

I just want to point something out: it really makes me sad that so many of you are saying that the majority of the reason you dislike him is because of his fans. I mean, not upset personally or offended by your saying so--just really bummed out that that's the case.

I'd also like to say that a lot of the time, when it seems as if we think he can do no wrong, the reality is that we are basically reduced to the point of incessantly defending Spike from his "extreme" haters, who essentially think he can do no right. In exchanges like that, it's easy to perceive the defense as blind and unconditional. Really though, Spike is a reformed murderer. If his fans really thought he could "do no wrong," that would make us bat-poop crazy and we should probably be locked up. While Spike's fans don't think he's flawless, (and honestly I have never encountered one myself who does), we've come to a point where we can appreciate who he is and can understand why he does what he does.

Additionally, finding an action understandable does not mean we haven't found fault with it.

Acceptance doesn't equal unconditional pardoning but I think it gets perceived as such when we're backed into a corner, and that happens a lot in the fandom. 🙂

You're making all kinds of sense as far as I can see. Course, I tend to look at things throuh my Spike tinted glasses, or at least some folks claim that I do..
2) IMO he lives his life without a single thought or action for himself. I grow tired of his need to always one up Angel. I'd like to see him do something that wasn't somehow connected to besting Angel or impressing a female. Sometimes I wonder if Spike even knows himself.
It's interesting because this why I love Spike. He doesn't know who he is. He is himself in being what others want him to be... I know that doesn't make much sense... but he's a very other oriented person. And by that I mean he doesn't so much see the world in terms of himself, he sees the world in terms of other people and himself. He's trying to one up Angel so that he can prove he can. He tries to impress the women in his life so they'll take notice and give him meaning. To Spike, an action is meaningless if no one is there to appreciate it. And therefore, his actions are done to win the appreciation of others. Other oriented people are really quite interesting... they may seem spineless at first... but when you really look at them you realize it takes a lot of guts to put yourself on the line like that time and time again. And they wouldn't do it unless they felt they had to... being true to themselves is doing things for the appreciation of others. Interesting phenomenon if you ask me.

Now I'd like to take a second to reiterate what Gun Gnome said. There is a difference between understanding an action and excusing it. Most of the arguments/debates I've had about Spike with Spike haters have ended in me explaining and understanding a mistake Spike made and them insisting that doesn't excuse it. I always agree and they still insist. And then generally, I'm insulted by a remark about how I excuse everything Spike does and think he can do no wrong. Every time I hear this, I respond with some form of "The fact he does wrong is my literal favorite thing about him. You're not listening to me." And every time I am met with insistent criticism that I excuse Spike for every mistake he makes.

I have never met a Spike fan who actually excuses Spike and doesn't think he can do wrong. Most of us, myself included, understand Spike and love it when he does wrong because he always learns from his mistakes. The journey Spike takes is just plain beautiful. He learns so much, and grows so much. And he does his best growing through thinking about the mistakes he's made.

I hate to say it... well actually I don't but I know there's going to be a HUGE emotional response so... But Seeing Red was the biggest spout of growth Spike ever made. He thought about the mistake he made in that bathroom and while talking to Clem he realized exactly how bad it was. He went to get his soul because he realized how horrible what he did was and he didn't want to do something like that again. He wanted to have a moral compass. He grew into that from that mistake. To me, that's a really beautiful thing. I HAVE to believe that people can grow from even the worst mistakes... because I've made some awful ones and continue to make mistakes every day. And Spike gives that to me.

Now... for the question why people hate Spike... for the most part, from what I've observed... they either do not understand him, or they get hung up on the actual mistakes he's made and fail to see the consequences they have on him in terms of his personal growth. To be a Spike fan, you have to have an unbelievable capacity for empathy. Some people just don't have that capacity. Now, I'm not saying all Spike haters are unempathetic. Please do not take my words out of context here. I'm saying you have to be able to empathize with someone making decisions COMPLETELY on emotion. Spike's decision making skills suck usually because he runs pretty much solely on emotion. That gets really frustrating really fast to a lot of people... because life requires more balance than that. You have to have an extraordinary ability to empathize and not get hung up on the mistakes he makes (even the longstanding one of doing before thinking).

As for people who don't understand Spike... most often they don't understand his emotionality. I've seen a lot of people say that Spike became lame after he became a love sick puppy. But Spike was always a love sick puppy. Both in the chronology of his life and the chronology of the show. In season School Hard when we see Dru for the first time, he's vamped out and unvamps himself and changes his tone from a snarky demanding tone to a soft soothing one to speak to her. From the very first time we see Spike with a love interest, he's a love sick fool. His emotionality is what makes him him... but people often do not understand this.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who think the world, and those who feel it. Spike feels the world in a way that most people just do not. Those who are a certain distance away on the thinking side of the spectrum will not ever be able to understand Spike and his feelings.

The grey area of Spike's character also confuses people often. Some people need black and white to understand things. Those people drive me crazy because nothing in the world is actually black and white... but some people need these definite terms nonetheless. To those people, Spike will never make sense... they'll never be able to trust anything he does. Because they'll never be sure of his motives. They'll never be able to empathize because he just did something terrible. They'll never be able to grasp the emotional motivator because emotions are all over the place and with Spike they're never just this or that. He likes Buffy... but hates her. He loves Buffy... but wants to kill her. He hates himself, but doesn't want to die. He wants his soul, but came to that conclusion through hurting Buffy. To a black and white person, all of this sounds just like inconstant writing rather than a character who acts on emotion alone.

I'd continue, but I'm not sure how much sense I'm making... I have a lot of thoughts and feelings....

Aaaand here we go again. Spikefans come over and write a 10 pager on how they see Spiiiike the Hero at the slightest attempt at a modest critique of their idol , (and I find most entries in this thread so far very moderate and tolerant)-- see above why many of us here go from mild indifference to virulent dislike. don't start me on 'why', you won't like it. But to put it brief:

Sexbot
Attempted Rape
Stealing and sniffing of the underwear
BDSM factor
Chains

I guess I am really squeamish when it comes to sexual deviance and repeated offenses -- add the Clock Work Orange premise of the whole 'becoming a good guy' arc - and you have me vomiting quietly in the corner.

Hang on a second. I didn't come to this tread to write a 10 page paper on why I love Spike my hero or to come to defense of the white knight Spike as you seem to suggest here. Most of my rather lengthy post (which was not intended to be that lengthy) was actually about why people dislike Spike, not about why I like him. Just because I'm a Spike fan doesn't mean I don't have the right to speculate on why people don't like him. And I wasn't disrespectful about it either. I answered honestly about what I've observed. Because I'm a Spike fan, I've spent quite a lot of time thinking about this subject... so I think I have the right to offer my opinion thank you very much.

And I'm not overly defending him at the slightest mention of someone moderately critiquing him. I'm not even going to go on a rant about how ridiculous it is you don't like him for fetish reasons. Can we keep the snark out of this thread please? I found this to be quite rude.

I hate Spike because I think that he ruined the later seasons, so I agree with what's alredy been said. I don't think Spike belonged on the show after s3, he should've only had a small part in the earlier seasons. ...and, honestly, I feel like I'm too old to be fan.

See I don't see this at all, Spike for me doesn't grow at all as a character until Chosen.

When he's introduced he's a selfish guy who has no backbone to stand up to his girlfriend, he does everything for her, and while I think that looks like he's a selfless character, I think it's the reverse, he goes out of his way to be nice so she stays with him.

This is carried forward to Buffy, he does everything for her - but not for her, but to get her to like him, I don't see that as selfless at all, it's purely selfish. Like when everyone turns on Buffy and kick her out, I know everyone has opinions on that, but I think the gang were right, Buffy was correct in her plan, but was doing everything the wrong way, the gang was right to show her she was spinning out of control, but Spike just sides with her and Buffy can do no wrong.

I think it's like this right up till Chosen, when Buffy says I love you to him, he knows shes saying it to be nice, and he says no you don't, because he no longer needs her approval, he actually is proving himself a hero, he isn't just saving the day for Buffy.

I hate to say it... well actually I don't but I know there's going to be a HUGE emotional response so... But Seeing Red was the biggest spout of growth Spike ever made. He thought about the mistake he made in that bathroom and while talking to Clem he realized exactly how bad it was. To me, that's a really beautiful thing. I HAVE to believe that people can grow from even the worst mistakes... because I've made some awful ones and continue to make mistakes every day. And Spike gives that to me.

I couldn't disagree more.

This is what I was saying when I said it's fans opinions on Spike that have developed my hate for him. And I don't mean to aim it at you Zobo, this is an opinion I've come across frequently.

But where are you getting this from? Because the show I saw has a Spike who just attempted to rape Buffy, he clearly explains his reason while he is doing it, that he knows she loved him, becasue he felt it when he was with her, so he tried to be with her to make her feel it. Then when he gets back to Clem, to me he pretty much explains that he wants to get his soul back because thats the only thing stopping Buffy from loving him.

He doesn't understand the feels between them, he confuses sex and love and believed Buffy would "love" him when he was having sex with her, when he thinks about it, he then thinks he needs his soul for her to love him.

And again none of this is selfless, he didn't do it for Buffy, he did it to prove to her that she was in love with him, believing that if he came back with his soul she would have to love him.

I understand that allot of what happens is up to interpretation, but in this particular case, if you look at the script, read what Spike Says to Buffy during the scene, what he says to Clem it's so clear his thought process, but then people say he got his soul because he knew he did wrong, which I just dont see at all.

I'd continue, but I'm not sure how much sense I'm making... I have a lot of thoughts and feelings....

I agree with this, I think there is way to much of a grey area around Spike. The writers didn't seperate pre and post soul Spike enough, something that was clearly set out for them.

Now I know it goes under the heading of Spike being this special vampire, but what I have a problem with is when you are discussing something with his fans, one will say about how wonderful he is, then you bring up Seeing Red, and it's "Oh no he didn't have a soul it's excusable" - To me, I can take that, but I think that means everything pre soul should be excusable, that he couldn't have loved Buffy in season 5 and 6 because it wasn't the same person.

Now people will say "I agree, and I think they only loved each other from Season 7 on" - I can get on board with that, but it isn't a general conciousness, it varies fan to fan, whereas with Angel you have a clear divide, you don't hear Angel fans saying he was so in love with Buffy because he tried to kill her when he was Angelus, Angelus and Angel are taken as separate people, as they should be, because thats the way the show sets up the vampire mythology, but then when it comes to Spike, because he's a fan favourite all the rules have to be changed.

Hmm, to me it's just the opposite, I used to love spike with all his mistakes, and being nasty and snarky. That was the Spike I loved. the Spike of Season six and seven, not so much. I never hated him I just didn't find him half as interesting anymore. Once Spike lost his 'bite' I found him to be a bit boring even. To me personally I think it was Spuffy that ruined Spike for me as a character.
