Why do we like vampires?

Okay, I found something really old about this in the cemetry, but what with Twilight being all cool now, and thus vampires (at least, I'd say) I thought let's bring this back.
Quoting from my all-knowing bible, last months British Glamour magazine:

Is it just us, or is there something sexy about vampires? In celebration of this month's ghoulish flick, Twilight... we wanted to pay homage to our favourite bloodsuckers. Whose neck would you have nibbled on? David Boreanaz's in ANgel? Tom Cruise's or Brad Pitt's in Interview with the Vampire? Kiefer Sutherland's in The Lost Boys? Or Gary Oldman's in Darcula? In the accompanying photo collage thingy, JM is also featured. And thank God, not Tom Cruise (I mean, YUK). But it is a good question? Why do we like vampires? Is it because of some (at points, not so very) hidden erotic sub-text? Is it something else? And why do you like them personally? (If you do, that is)

Well i'm sure being sexy helps a lot! 😀 and the stoy lines.
If its not a good film/tv show i wont carry on watching or even if there there really good looking...becuase i wouldn't be able to sit and watch.
 
I think it's the being all dark and mysterious and everything...well, I mean at least the vampires we like (like, the average dusted-in-5-seconds vamp we don't really care for). And he movie guys really always try to make vampires look as sexy as possible. I was just talking with one of my roommates earlier how at the whole beginning of s3 on Buffy Angel doesn't seem to own any shirts....grabbing for ratings is what it is 😉
 
Mh, I think in a mysterious way women seem to be in general more attracted by vampires then men, probably because before Drusilla and Darla I can't think of any famous female vampire, but yeah it basically seems to be thing about which girls go mad. Buffy and Angel changed that in a way I believe.

But yeah, I don't know what makes them so fascinating. Probably the same thing that horror films are being watched for. In a dull modern plastic bag world like ours, no real wonder.
 
I think it's the mystery and the fact that they're not real, so it's something we can't have, we always want what we can't have. Like Adam and Eve wanting the forbidden fruit, or guys wanting lesbians.
 
I love them because they are so dark, mysterious, strong and just sexy (well some of them)! And if they fell in love with an human (twilight etc.) it's just agreat love story I want to read or see on TV, because the imagination of losting my heart to a dark mysterious (good looking!) creature who can save my life easily because of his power, is just more romantic than loving an ordinary boy...

The vampire has usually been portrayed in fiction as the charming, elegant, irresistible predator. He never has to chase down his victims like the werewolf, the mutated cannibalistic zombies, or any of the other supernatural predators that we are most commonly familiar with. They're monsters. The vampire isn't, or at least he doesn't APPEAR to be until that last moment, when the victim is within his grasp and escape, even struggle, is useless. In order to hunt, the vampire must circulate among his prey. He can't repel them. The vampire seduces his victim, figuratively, and sometimes even literally. He's a deadly, beautiful, sexy killer. He's the James Bond of monsters. That's why we find him so fascinating.

Vamps can be hot(cold) tho... cuz they would go flamey if they got too hot right?

I mean even dorky xander who hates them, loved the idea of a bad ass vamp version o fhimself (which ive always found interesting with his hate of them and all)
 
I like vampires because they are immortal. I like the JW vampires because of their coolness factor; out of all the vamps on Buffy &/or Angel, I enjoyed watching Angel the most (even tho I am a total Spike lover!) - esp in some of the later eppys of Angel - I liked how he "jumped out of windows" & off buildings, and the "acrobatics" he did - especially during the scene Angel & Lindsay were sword fighting in "You're Welcome" - AWESOME.

Vampires are STRONG, and strong is sexy. I also like vampires for their evilness, but they do, in fact, LOVE. Spike & Dru, Angel & Darla, etc.

I'm not into the Twilight vamps (yet) and as far as Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt as a vamp.... no thanks, I'd rather have WESLEY SNIPES! 😉
 
All i kept thinking about "why do we like em?"

is that Cult in Lie To Me...

is that what we are all like... inside.... we 'worship' them (or at the altar of whedon)... we talk along with buffy episodes.... (like Ford did)........... gah!

hopefully we dont have the bad outfits like they did anyways.

I think because they hold some bit of strange humanity, albeit in some cases just in appearance. They are sexy but not always in the overt way, but more in the fact that they have great power, exude confidence, know what they want and take it. I think those are things we all wish we had, and that we all wish we had the courage to be who we are and do what we want without having to adhere to some standards of society or morals. They are mysterious and attractive and yet sinister and well-feared, and in that way respected, and i think people want that themselves.

That and the whole idea of being immortal, never aging, is also really appealing in a society which for such a long time has feared old age. And to be able to see the world change, to live through decades of invention and major events and to see the world 100 years from now but to not have changed ourselves, is also appealing. Everyone is curious to see that far ahead, and being a vampire would give you that chance.

Well, judging from where he came from at that time and how his mind worked, realistically he shouldn't have owned any pants either... but at least I'm glad we didn't get to see much of THAT. :lmao:
 
I actually don't like them. I think that they're horrible, overused, and cliched. But I liked Buffy and Angel because cheestastic as it could be at times, it was a very really show. Not because it was a vamp show.
 
I envy them their eternal youth 🙂
(assuming they were young and pretty when they got turned - I'm thinking Spike, Angel, Edward rather than say, The Master or Faith's buddy Kikistos)

I'm pretty much just going to mirror what WA said. They're usually portrayed as charming, mysterious, and eternally young and beautiful. They get their victims through seduction instead of just running after them and ripping them apart. Their blood-sucking is often seen as a very sexual act. It's only natural that people would see the appeal.

Plus, there's the obvious thing where they're usually really good-looking in movies. I doubt people would find them so sexy if they all looked like Nosferatu.

Well, but still. To me, even IF they all looked like Nosferatu they would still be weirdly fascinating. Only, less sexy ^^ I guess it has to do with what WA already said, there's mystery. Much more than with your ordinary zombie.
