Why do we like vampires?

Is it true the actual 'Dracula' dude, began as a Christian, in literature history?

Plus, there's the obvious thing where they're usually really good-looking in movies. I doubt people would find them so sexy if they all looked like Nosferatu.
That's pretty much the paradigm change of the Gothic novel at work. After all, it changed the metaphor for the Black Plague that vampires used to be back in medieval Eastern Europe - which is still the main base for Schreck's and Kinski's portrayals of Nosferatu - into a metaphor for sex (one that Sigmund Freud would rejoice over... pointed object piercing virginal skin and drawing blood, need I say more?).

Not that the Gothic novel invented that sex paradigm, though... after all, the possibly first mythological "vampire" was the Akkadian/Sumerian Lilitu, a birdlike she-demon of the night who stole sleeping men's blood and semen (who, obviously, would later inspire the myths of Succubi and Incubi).
