Why do we love them anyway...?

Well...I have only seen the beginning of Buffy season 7 so far, and I was really drawn to the spike in episodes after 'beneath you' because he is really confused and is somewhat helpless! (notice i say "somewhat" lol) you see a whole different side of him...

as for totally evil spike...evil is just well...cool!

They haven't actually killed thousands, big revelation up ahead... it's all fake.

Spike embodies the beaten down guy, that takes his anger out on the world.

Angelus embodies pure evil. And face it, we, humans, are fascinated by it.

I think that you have it right about Angelus. He is evil and sadistic and he is facinating because he is part of a character like Angel who is kind and sympathetic. Angel is Angelus if you remove his sense of morality and give him the freedom to do what he wants he chooses to creatively kill and torture people. Angelus is interesting he has great lines and is pure evil. Because he is a true monster he doesn't have any of the characteristics that make evil humans understandable. Angelus is incomprehisible evil. Liam was a victim but he had Angelus inside of him even before he was vamped. That's interesting.

I have to disagree with you about Spike. In my opinion Spike isn't beaten down. He was a very nice, nerdy guy who took care of his mother and had very few friends but wasn't bitter. Then he was turned into a vampire and lost his sense of morality. Sure he killed the people who made fun of him with railroad spikes, but who doesn't think about killing the people who hurt him or her? Without notions of good and evil it is very easy to act on your desires. I think that Spike is unusually nice for a souless vampire and not particuarly evil. He is interesting because he has style and is not what we expect in a monster. He is a really complicated character and falls in love easily and is then willing to do anything to make the person he loves happy / keep her love. A lot of the bad things that Spike did on Buffy were because of his love for Drucilla. Spike likes the world and likes people in general, yet he is (for a while) a soulless vampire. Spikes contridictions make him interesting.
