Why does everyone hate Riley, part 2

I didnt like Riley. He was, more than likely, my least favorite character out of the entire seven season span of the show. Reason being that by the time season three was over, I didnt want Buffy and Angel to go their own separate ways, and by bringing him in to replace Angel so quickly pissed me off. He was just not the type of character that Buffy normally went for, in the idea that he was all Mr. Nice Guy instead of her pick of bad boys. Ugh, I just dont like him. XD
 
I'm a bangel, so my obvious dislike of him was because no one else could be with Buffy except for Angel. And I found him a poor replacement. But now, when I re-watch Season 4, I find that I don't mind him quite as much. He wasn't a fantastic character, but he tied in nicely with the plotline of Season 4.

And I loved it in Season 5 when it was highlighted that Buffy didn't really love him that much. That's probably another reason why my point of view of him changed 🙂
 
He was too much of a boyscout for my tastes, too. All in all I found the episodes that highlighted Riley and the Initiative to be some of the less interesting ones of the season.
 
I didn't like Riley because he was just Buffy's boyfriend, you can have a character like Angel being so interesting and the expect us to like the new simple guy, for Buffy ok she wants a normal guy but for the viewers is very boring.
They tried to make him more interesting with The Initiative but it didn't work.
I thik the writers realized about this because when Riley leaves his friend said.
What are you here? just Buffy's boyfriend?
Or something like that, and that's it, without her he's nothing, but with Angel and Spike that doesn't happen they are more than Buffy's love.
 
I don't know if this had been discussed yet, but I don't get why people don't like this guy.
He's part of an organization that puts Spike on the side of Buffy (via the ever popular "chip-in-the-head" fashion) and for those that think Spuffy is good, there shouldn't be any problems.

From what it sounds like, the folks that don't like Riley are the ones that liked Angel...and this Riley guy came in way too quick.

[Again, this is from me, and I haven't even gotten through half of season four]

Well, I hated Angel even more than Riley, at least first time I saw the show.. And I really hated Riley 😀

I think what most people disliked about Riley was him as a character. That he was uninteresting and stuff. For most people I think it had little to do with Angel. But then again, there are those who think like that, just like hating Kennedy only 'cause of Tara 😉
 
I love Angel but I also really liked Riley. I think it was a nice change to see Buffy with a "normal" type of guy.
 
I didn't like Angel when he was on Buffy, and I hated Riley. Not only was a boring, but he was in the initiative. I think that the initiative was really annoying, and not a very good or well developed plot idea.

Joss really didn't have much to do with season 4, yes he knew of the Idea, and gave the go ahead, but its we4ll documented that when he finally came back(remember Angel was just starting and that took alotof his time), he changed a few things.

I hated Riley, no doubt about it, butit has NOTHING to do with Angel, even though i'm a fan of the Angel/Buffy romance, i liked the idea of them, especially Buffy, getting more dating/life experience before she settles for one man, my problem is that Riley was just so dull, and i've said before, i blame Mark Blucas. Every movie i have seen him in i have found him the same monotonous character, no life, no personality, no.......thanx!!!

The Idea of the Initiative, i thought was perfect, if not executed well, it had great potential, which i think 'The Watcher'(i think) in another thread stated that best Initiative moments are when they aren't really there, EG, Why We Fight.
I did like Maggie Walsh, and i thought that she should have remained until the end, she gave the Initiave an adult feeling, one that made it more plausible then some College guys running around with Heavy Artillery.
 
i think no one like him because he came right after angel and that is really a hard realationship to have to come next to...i didn't like him for some odd reason but i didn't hate him either it's weird mixed feelings here.

I agree with you. After a dramatic relationship like Bangel it would be difficult for alot of people to accept Riley as the new guy in Buffy's life....expecially since he came across as so normal at first.

Being a hardcore Bangel shipper myself I found it took me a while to warm up to the Riley/Buffy relationship but in the end I really ended up liking him.
 
My view on this is pretty much that of Willowfanforlife and Kimm.

I also found Riley a less strong character than most ("wishy-washy-ish?"), I mean he had some moments, but most of the time he seemed like Buffy's annoying (for lack of a better word) boyfriend, something about him just gritted against me for some reason (again, he did have some episodes when I genuinly liked him, I'm talking about my opinion on him overall). I guess that, combined with how he left and that situation, just made me not a huge fan. I didn't HATE him, but he definitley wasn't my favourite character.

That's just my opinion though, and I'm afraid with his character, it tends to shift from "I've finally warmed up to Mr. Finn, he's cool" to "Grr thank goodness he left" all too often 😉
 
I liked Riley. I thought he was a nice guy & Marc Blucas is a great actor. I do think however that it was too sudden after Buffy & Angel's breakup, but Buffy was lonely & she must've felt like she was ready to try another relationship. I mean she & Angel both knew they could never be together at that point. He wasn't my favorite character, but I of course liked him more than Parker. I knew Buffy could never love anyone like she did Angel, but that's not a reason for her to not love at all anymore. So I really didn't hate Riley at all. Him leaving Buffy became a part of what she would become. It made her stronger I think & I enjoyed the whole storyline up until he left. I could've done without the ep in s6 though when he returned with a wife. That was quick.

I like Riley from the beginning. My and my roommate use to say that he looked a lot like Nick Lachey. I thought he and Buffy would be OK together. He was no Angel of cource but who is! In the late part of the 4th season and the early part of 5th season, he just became so insecure. He was always trying to compare his strength to Buffy's. His insecurities is what got me to no like him so much.

I just never liked Riley i thought it was too much of a competition with him. The whole relationship was based on who can win the most fights and who can kick ass more. To me Riley was never happy with Buffy being the strongest out of the two. I think he felt insecure that she was the Slayer and that she did not need him to fight her battles for her.

The episode when he went off with that Vampire was just really bad, it showed me that all he could think about was himself and not Buffy.

To me Riley was very self centered and all he thought about was becoming better than Buffy.
