Why does everyone hate Riley?

"ludacris talk" meaning the silly talk that someone mentioned that Oz was a rebound.

I would think twice about starting on somebody because they dont want to reply to your immature and petty remarks.

Oz wasnt a rebound. She met Oz before having "feelings" for Xander, so therefore Oz couldnt have been a rebound. If anything Veruca was a rebound for Oz, cos he knew that Willow couldnt cope with the whole "Oz is a werewolf thing".

Think before you start to put your fingers into action!!

Willow has feelings for Xander from the very first episode....even Oz knew that, thats why when Willow first offered to 'make out' with him, he declined.
Remember it was just after she discovered the Xander/Cordy relationship.

And as for your 'ludicris talk' of Veruca, due to Willows inability to accept the wolf in Oz, WTF.....the thing Willow couldnt accept was seeing her Boyf NAKED with another woman, and the fact that attraction was brought over in the Human part of his life.
Willow was beyond acceptance of the Wolf, its one of the first things she finds out about him nearly TWO YEARS BEFORE.

Now, Soozy-18, fact is, you totally missed the whole show, IF you believe that the Willow/Xander thing was a season 3 thing only, and the ENTIRE point of Willow if you believe she couldnt accept the wolf.

Oz is a rebound guy, but it genuinely grows into a nice relationship.

Look at the facts.
She was a social misfit, she 'loved' Xander, she had seen Xander kissing Cordelia, had her heart Broken, Oz a cool and respected guy showed interest....

Man, its obvious he was a rebound........you should revisit the entire series again.....

Though i still query other 'rebounds' that have been mentioned, this one is definate.

Are you talking to me? I hope not, I despise hypocrites.

Uhm, don't we find out that Willow has feelings for Xander in the first couple of episodes?

Well she can't compare dating Xander to dating Oz. As she never dated Xander. As you have said..
Added to that, Willow never once compares Tara to Oz, indicates Oz has nothing to do with it.
A rebound case, there is constant comparison.

Rebounding requires constant comparison. Sure she might have been trying to get past what she thought would have been a good relationship, but does that instantly make Oz the 'rebound guy'? Or does it just make Oz someone she meets and falls for? I don't understand how you can rebound from something that never happened.

You can still have strong feelings that you might need to get over/rebound from, you can still have been just as hurt, even if technically something never really happened..
(Not that I think Oz was about that for her, I don't think Willow falling for Oz had anything to do with her feelings for Xander.)

EDIT: Wait.. isn't this discussion about Riley? Uh..

Well i must say, too much f***ing bitching on here. I thought that OPINIONS were to be posted?! I didnt realise that a psycho-analysis of the ENTIRE cast was really that important!

Isnt it quick how STRANGERS think/"apparently know" what you have and havent seen? Hmm.

Strangers would assume you have seen the show, as you're on a site discussing it. Hell, maybe it's just me, with my wacky non-logic thinking.

So I called up the Captain

Uh.. Riley.. Em.. Ye, Riley blew.:monkeybut

Yea yea, again, can people try to be a little bit less unfriendly, and then maybe we can stop discussing the fact that people are unfriendly, heh, since that's really not what this thread should be about (unless you mean to say that Riley was that is 😉 )..

i thought Riley was ok.... as ive always said. He bought something "normal" into Buffy's life!

OK guys, there have been two polite warnings from mods about keeping this thread civilised...any more personal attacks or bashing and the thread closes...

Wow, for a character that so many people consider bland and uninteresting Riley sure evokes some heated opinions.

To get this (hopefully) back on topic, i tend to think that Riley was a victim of his character working too well. He was supposed to be the opposite of Angel, that was the point and why Buffy was attracted to him, or so she thought to begin with anyway. Unfortunately, that not only led to the Bangel fans being a little (notice the understatement) anti-Riley but also meant that he came across as very uninteresting and wooden.

Now i personally don't think Marc Blucas is as bad an actor as some have suggested. Okay, the guy is no Pacino but there are hundreds of worse actors than he is with regular work on some of the highest rated shows on television. Usually, the ability of an actor is relative to the taste of the viewer anyway so that goes without saying.

The truth is that Riley will never make my top ten list of the characters i think deserve to star in their own DVD movie but he played the part that he was destined to play. In many ways you were never destined to truly love him, because neither did Buffy.

I don't really think that there was anything wrong with Riley. He was just a character, that obviously didn't leave much impact considering he was never discussed again after his brief return in season six.

If you understood the whole Initiative storyline, you could see how Riley was useful. He was sort of like a foil... someone the Buffy had never had to relate to before that she wasn't used to.

I always thought Marc Blucas was sort of perfect as Riley, and I do think RIley was supposed to be just as boring as he was 😀
Problem is it gets boring to watch. I don't think Riley was the problem with season 4 though – the whole Initiative thing was.. And Riley had too much to do with that.
Maybe they should have made him leave a bit earlier in season 5, I don't know, but then again, he never eally bothered me that much in s5..
Again, I think the main problem was the Initiative, that thing just didn't really work.. And because of that, neither did Riley..

The Arcane
The Initiative could have been really good but it needed more development. Just felt too rushed into the mythology of Buffy.
See I liked the Initiative storylines - I didn't LOVE Riley and Buffy together, but I didn't hate the character per se. As The Watcher said, he served his purpose on the show. I liked him much better than that crap Parker storyline. lol

I like the Initiative less than I liked Riley! They had no clue what they were doing; they were in way over their heads, but thought themselves infallible. And they didn't know anything about demons. I bet some of the demons they experimented on weren't bad at all. Just different, like Clem, or Doyle, or any other benevolent demon. They didn't even know what a slayer was!

I actually loved the whole idea with the Initiative.. But as The Watcher said in a comment: "The Initiative could have been really good but it needed more development. Just felt too rushed into the mythology of Buffy."
I loved the idea, but it just didn't work half as well as it could have. And it's hard to not just see Riley as one of those Initiative guys, since well, that's a huge part of him.. Not his fault the Initiative story didn't work too well though.

Ironically, the Initiative began to work better the less we saw of them.

The later mentions of the organisation, such as was shown in Angel's fifth season episode Why We Fight started to flesh them out and show that they weren't just some crappy government team with little or no idea about what they were doing. They had been around for a very long time. Pity that this couldn't have been more a part of Buffy season 4, then it might have worked a lot more realistically.

I agree that the whole concept of the Initiative was a good one, but it was rushed too much. Maybe if they had panned it over maybe a season and a half then we would have learned more about them.

Its not something that should have been rushed into.

I hated Riley! I can't explain it but out of all of Buffy's boyfriends - even the evil ones - I could not stand the guy. He was incredibly dull at first. The Initiative thing didn't make him any more interesting...I was constantly hoping that a vamp would suck him dry or that he would turn out to be supremely evil and be murdered by the heartbroken Buffy. I was thrilled to death when he left.
