Why does Giles sing so much in season 4?

It fits in and is fun, but it didn't really have a purpouse any of the time (maybe in restless forshadowing omwf?) I was wondering if there was some cute story behind it? Maybe that the writers found out he had a good voice and wanted to display it. Or ASH asking if he could do it?

I guess the writers did it to bring Giles's character closer to us.
The viewers didn't really know much about his personal life up to Season 3 and they probably wanted to show that he's not just that weird librarian, but that he has also a "cool" side.

And they probably wanted to show off with Tony's amazing voice. It's just amazing, isn't it? 😱

That makes sense! It was fun to get to know Giles more, although I think we did when he met Jenny too. 🙂 but season 4 does show more, like Olivia and him being drunk. Shows he has a fun side too. I really like that! It's one of the reasons I really enjoy s04, so much Giles! 😀

I don't think he was very cool when he sang though. 😀 he has a nice voice, but more lame/adorable feelings towards his perfomances. 🙂

Except for the Initiative I also really enjoyed S4. And I think Giles' performance of "Freebird" was great! :)
Midlife crisis.

Singing and a younger girlfriend in season 4 and a sports car in season 5.

Not really having a job in season 4, Giles had more time to indulge in his hobbies which seem to include playing guitar, singing and scamming on younger women 😉

Also in the making of OMWF documentary Joss says that he thinks Tony is amazingly talented and wants to get him singing on screen whenever possible.

In season 4, Giles is kind of lost & trying to figure out where he belongs. He's no longer the high school librarian, the Scoobies are growing up & branching out. Becoming adults. I think he wonders what else he could be doing with his life (hence his dream sequence involving Olivia and the baby carriage, and his stage time in Restless). Remember that at the very beginning of season 5, he decides to go back to England. I think he feels that he's not needed. He's exploring other aspects of himself, and the singing scenes are part of that.

Beause of my incessant fan mail writing... that's right you can thank me!

Lol, no not really. But I did appreciate that he did, he has a beautiful voice, and I think the reason behind it was
a) to show off his beautiful voice, Joss was surely aware
b) give us another facet of Giles' personality so we could get to know him better, more personally, as something else than just the 'stuffy' Watcher. And I feel it's indicated from his 'Ripper' days that music was a very important part of his young life.

He was a "gentleman of leisure", so he was just reflecting. Had a lot of free time on his hands, so why not? When I was unemployed, I sang, like all the time. 😉

No seriously his voice is wonderful. I even downloaded his exposition song from Restless on my phone. "And try not to bleed on my couch, I just had it steamed cleaned." 😀

The writers decided to have Giles do some singing, they were needing inspiration for how he could be knocked-out.
Still, it could have been worse, he might have sung something from Jesus Christ Superstar or The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
