Hi I was just wondering if anyone had an official reason why Tara hid the magic dust (for want of a better phrase) in Goodbye Iowa whilst doing a spell with Willow?

My reasoning is Tara realised that Willow may only be wanting to spend time with her for the magic aspect and Tara already had vested feelings for Willow. Therefore to keep Willow coming back she hid the dust so that the spell didn't work and ultimately they would spend more time together.

However if anyone has an official Joss comment or reasoning behind this I'd love to know.

I think its because at the time Tara thought that she might be half-demon because of the lies her family had told her. And the spell was to find denomic activity so she was scared that it would point out her as a demon.

Yeah, that's what I got from that too.
It's nice that they added that into the script a season before.

I always thought it was a mixture of the two -- Tara wanting to hide her supposed "demon" side, and also wanting the spell to go awry so she can spend more time with Willow ^^

no i think its definetly the demon thing..we all know Joss usually knows where characters are going to go ages before they do. They were doing a spell to find demons and tara thought she had demon so she didnt want willow to see her on the demon map

This is actually quite interesting...

We only know 'the answer' now because we've seen the later episode and it features this scene in the 'previously' bit to tie it together. I hadn't thought about the fact it could have also had something to do with wanting to spend more time with Willow. And that got me to thinking about what I thought about Tara the first time I watched it. I thought she was going to be, not necessarily a villain, but obviously wanted to sabotage the Scoobies plans. I think it occurred to me at the time that she could have been a demon, but not in the way it turns out.

So yeah, I just spent a few minutes thinking about that lol

I always thought she was kind of creepy and stuff till 'Family' but i think she was told to play it like she had a big secret, because as soon as that episode aired i loved her 🙂 and she fitted 😀

yes it is tara thought she was a half demon and though if the spell worked then willow would find out, xxxxxx

Personally, I believe that Tara hid the dust in Goodbye Iowa because she believed that she was part demon. She was afraid that if the spell did work than the map would have pointed to her as being a demon and she couldn't risk that happening.

Like everyone above me said, It was because she believed she was part demon and didn't want to risk getting "caught" or whatever. I also do agree that she could have just wanted to screw things on purpose just to gain some quality time with her new found crush. However, I also believe that she *may* have thought that, the kind of magic they were doing, may have been a bit too much for Willow to be doing, and wanted to protect her from it.
(ok that last one, it's just a 'what if' type thing, but the first two are what I always thought)

I'm on the demon theory and I actually think that it's unlikely Tara would try to screw up magic to get Willow to stay, since it would have the opposite effect. Tara noticed right away that Willow feels unsure about magic and herself, and probably figures that being willing to try magic and helping Willow succed in doing so, would make Willow more likely to come around more often. Otherwise, Willow might be discouraged, and I think Tara would usually have been unwilling to risk that.

But I'm thinking in this specific case, Tara was happy Willow was disapointed and maybe unwilling to try again. Atleast unwilling to try a demon findning spell. No matter how much she wants Willow happy, she wouldn't have wanted to risk it again.

I love the foreshadowing in this scene, because I know when I saw it, I was so confused and wondered what that was all about, and there were multiple episodes afterwards where we never found out. By the time I saw Family, I completely forgot about the magic dust part, and after I finished it, I realized why Tara did it. 😛

i always thought she hid it because tara thought the spell was too much/too advanced/too dangerous for them to be doing. i thought she was ambivalent about helping willow with potentially dangerous magic. which ties into what eventually breaks them apart.
then later in "family" we learn she thought she was part demon. but there's no way we could have known it then. i think it was both reasons though.

I think its because at the time Tara thought that she might be half-demon because of the lies her family had told her. And the spell was to find denomic activity so she was scared that it would point out her as a demon.

Yep, that. Because it was a demon finding spell, and she thought she was a demon, btu didn't want Willow to find out.

Did you make that banner? You got good!
Ironically, if Tara had let the spell go ahead, she would have realised that she wasn't part demon at all!

But of course then there would have been no story 😉
