Remember, in the earlier eps, Anya was a vengeance demon again? What happened to her amulet, that is the source of her power?Haley, aka, Halfrek, real name's Cecily, didn't have one in season 7 either. What happened?

Its quite possible that an amulet is not the only way a vengeance demon is given their powers although it is never explained in the episodes.

Also, in that one ep (i forget what it was called) where cordy had wished that buffy never came to sunnydale, at the end of the ep Giles smashed to amulet to make the world turn normal again.

It was called "The Wish".

The amulet seemed to loose importance as time wore on:

S3 (the wish) Cordy has to wear the amulet while she makes the wish, its destruction leads to Anyanka being stripped of her powers

S6 (older and far away) Hallie has an amulet, but Dawn doesn't even have to touch it

S7 (anything up to Selfless) Anya doesn't even have an amulet

My guess? The whole amulet thing got to inconvinient, so they phased it out.

Yeah, that was weird. You know another thing they didn't explain about vengeance demons? In the episode, "The Wish", Anya had a different vengeance demon face. When Halfrek came, aka Haley, her real name's Cecily, had a different vengeance demon face than Anya's in "The Wish".When Anya became a vengeance demon, she had the same face as Haley, but not like her other face in The Wish.

They were also two different types of vengeance demons which might have had something to do with their appearances. Anya dealt with the vengeance of scorned women and Halfrek granted vengeance to children as we is in "Older and Far Away".

Not really.Halfrek is the same kind of vengeance demon. She told the gang why she did it.They wondered why she got vengeance for Dawn, when vengeance demons only grants wishes to scorned women. The reason why she did it, was because she heard her pain, heard her cries, and felt sorry for her. That's why she said that they deserve to be cursed.Opps Haley is spelled Hallie.lol.

Here's the quotes:

BUFFY: Look, I-I don't think she- I don't think it's all her fault, okay? She ... there was a guidance counselor, or someone pretending to be a guidance counselor, she, she made Dawn make a wish.
ANYA: Guidance counselor? You made a wish to someone you've never seen before?
DAWN: (nervous) Yeah?
ANYA: Did she wear a pendant with a, with a dark blue stone?
DAWN: And little red flecks?
ANYA: Uhh, for crying out loud. (yells) Halfrek! (to Dawn) It's Halfrek, a vengeance demon. You made a wish to a vengeance demon.
DAWN: I didn't know.
ANYA: Only a vengeance demon can break her own vengeance spell. Nothing else will work. She's the only one who can get us out of here. (yells) Hallie, get your ass down here!

Halfrek materializes just behind Anya, in a puff of smoke.

HALFREK: (deep resonant voice) You rang?

Anya turns toward her.

Suddenly Halfrek gasps and looks down.

Close shot of Halfrek's stomach with the end of a sword protruding out of it.

Close on Halfrek's face as she collapses to the floor, revealing the demon standing behind her.

Close on Buffy staring in horror.
Blackout.

Later On...

Buffy looks over at Halfrek, who lies on the floor not moving.

ANYA: Her pendant! Get her pendant!

Anya and Buffy rush toward Halfrek. But before they reach her she sits up and puts out her hand toward Anya, who goes flying backward onto the sofa again. Buffy stares.

HALFREK: (normal voice) There will be no touching of the pendant.

Halfrek gets to her feet and brushes herself off, as everyone stares at her in surprise.

HALFREK: What? (laughs) Did you think I'd be stopped by a sword in the chest?

She looks down at her chest, pulls at her blouse so we can see the rip in it.

HALFREK: Flesh wound. (Anya getting up) Honestly, Anyanka, you used to know better.
ANYA: (coming closer) How could you? Why would you do this?
HALFREK: I told you I was going to take care of some business while I was here in town.
ANYA: Yeah, but cursing us? Some of them are in the wedding party.
HALFREK: I just go where I'm-

Halfrek pauses, looking to her right as Spike walks up.

HALFREK: (shocked whisper) William?
SPIKE: (frowning) Hey, wait a minute.
BUFFY: You guys know each other?

Shot of Willow, Clem, Sophie, and Tara getting up and approaching slowly.
Halfrek still staring at Spike, but now she snaps out of it.

HALFREK: (quickly) Uh, no. (laughs) No.

She fiddles with her hair nervously.

SPIKE: (still frowning) Not really.

Shot of Buffy looking confused.

TARA: I thought vengeance demons only punished men who wronged women.
HALFREK: Oh, that was Anya's little raison d'être. Most of us try to be a little more well-rounded. And actually, we prefer 'justice demon.' Okay? FYI.
ANYA: Well-rounded, huh? Is that how you explain your thing for bad parents?
HALFREK: Oh, it's not a thing. The children need me.
ANYA: Hmm! (coughing)Daddy issues(coughing)
HALFREK: Sling all the little barbs at me that you want, Anyanka, it doesn't change the fact that this girl was in pain, (pointing at Dawn) and none of you could hear it. (Dawn looks down) I could hear her crying out everywhere I went in this town. (Anya looking guilty) It was unbearable. And none of you knew.

Halfrek looks at Buffy, shaking her head. Buffy looks upset.

HALFREK: You people deserve to be cursed. (shot of the others listening) Enjoy your time together. From now on ... all you have is time. (to Anya) Time ... and each other. Good luck!

Does anyone know what raison d'être means?

So does that mean, that Hallie, and most other vengeance demons like to get vengeance on other things, not only men?Anya talked about Hallie who had daddie issues. So maybe Hallie became a vengeance demon, because she wanted vengeance on her daddy. That's probably why she prefers to help the children. So vengeance demons do help women curse men, but most vengeance demons just like getting vengeance on other things. That solves that problem. But what abou the amulet problem, or the fact that Anya's face was different in the wish?

You have to remember that Anya had a LONG transition between Vegenace Demon, then Human, and then Vengeance Demon again, maybe that changed her face or something...

Or...maybe it was a mistake...

It's french, and means motivation or reasons for doing something--in this case, Anya's particular reason for becoming a vengence demon.

I agree with Lee that the face thing may have to do with how long each has been a demon (Aud/Anya has been a demon for 1500 years, while Cecily/Hallie only has been for a century). It may alo have to do with how much humanity they have left in them, which explains why Anyanka's face was different later. In the flashbacks to Anyanka and Halfrek wrecking vengence together, Anya is completely focused on vengence, consumed by her mission, while Hallie seems a lot more well-rounded. Later, in "Selfless" Anya feels bad about killing all the frat boys, showing she has more humanemotions than she did in "The Wish".

As for the amulet, look at this quote from "Dopplegangland":
Anya: (pleadingly) Give me another chance. You can fold the fabric of time. Send me back to that place and I'll change it. I won't fail again.

D'Hoffryn: Your time is passed.

Anya: (desperately) Do you have any idea how boring twelfth graders are? (stands up) I'm getting my power center back. (defiantly) And if you won't help me, then, by the pestilent gods, I will find someone who will!

The power center is obviously the amulet. We never actually see anyone recieve an amulet, though. It may well be that after "The Wish", D'Hoffrin decided thta amulets were too easily stolen, just a guess though.

Vengeance demons carried out vengeance for anyone who was seeking it. However, some vengeance demons had their 'thing' - a calling card or specialty of sorts. For Anya, it was scorned women, for Hallie, it was children in pain.

I've heard the S-7 absence of the amulet thing mentioned by fans as a continuity error. Perhaps that's all it is - an oops by the continuity guy.

It's also possible the difference between demon Anya as she was introduced, and as she appeared in S-7 was a decision by the production team based more on the fact Anya had become a sypmpathetic character by that time. The demon Anya of S-7 is not as ugly as the early one. She doesn't speak with that gravelly voice.

Sometimes I just shake my head you know. Even at my own gullibility I shake my head.

Someone says to me where's her amulet, and I automatically assume they know for a fact it's gone.

I just rewatched Selfless. Want to know where the amulet is? It's around her flipping neck. Duh.

I had noticed that too..although I did notice it looked different and wasn't 100% sure that is WAS her 'vengeance demon' amulet. It must be though!

A person has to make his or her own mind up on the subject of course, but I've rewound and watched the selfless tape, and a bit of the Wish several times, and I've come to the conclusion the stone (or whatever that black orb is) is the same. The mountings are different.

There's definitely not enough evidence to say the power centre is not there. Something is hanging around Anya's neck, and it sure looks like the same black stone, glass, whatever to me.

Halfrek appears to be wearing the same stone in a different mounting also. In Selfless that's the case anyway.

she did wear her amulet. she just wore it under her top. presumably at first she did this to hide the fact she was a demon again from her friends. after that who know. anyas kinda fasion concious, maybe it didnt go with anything. also, if you cant see it, you cant break it.

The only place I couldn't find it in Selfless was in the Russian revolution scene, but there's so much jewelry hanging off the necks of Halfrek and Anyanka there, it could be hiding.

In the present day scenes a dark orb that could be interpreted as Anyanka's power center hangs from a kind of white gold chain on Anya, either displayed openly, or tucked in her blouse, and as I remember it, it's clearly visible on Halfrek.

Anya also wears what looks to be a white gold chain tucked into the neck of her blouse when she's on the job in Beneath You.

Also, an earlier poster said Cordelia had to wear the amulet to wish in The Wish. That's never stated. Anya allows Cordelia to wear it when she's trying to chum her up. This serves the added purpose of attracting the viewers' attention to the amulet suggesting it's significance, but it's never outright stated that the wisher has to be in physical contact with it to wish that I know of.

Actually the necklace Anyanka gives Cordelia in the wish can't be Anyanka's actual power center, because Giles rips the power center off Anyanka's neck at the end. Cordelia's power center copy necklace is already in Giles' possession at the time.
