WHy Doesnt Charles just GTA himself a truck?

Which sounds like a better way to get yourself a truck?

Steal one, and RISK losing your soul?

or make a pact with a demon signed with your own blood, and GUARANTEE losing your soul.

I would guess that stealing a car might lead to a prison sentence and being jailed would have prevented him from protecting those he cared about, eg his sister. Gunn then seemed like quite a hot-head, very 'in the now' so the acute need to stay safe and help others stay safe was more important to him than the( probably ) vague concept of a soul.

He had yet to met Angel -a veritable poster boy for what a soul represents and that it has tangible repercussions and is, albeit arguably incorporeal, still a tangible thing.

I think for teenage Gunn these were wholly foreign matters and that he, in his devil-may-care attitude of inexperienced (life) yet experienced (in grisly hardships) youth frankly didn't care what would happen to his soul when he died. He was right then, had a need right then, and come whatever may I doubt he gave much though to what would come after his inevitable death beyond 'knowing', or thinking, that he wanted to go down fighting.

At the time, when Gunn sold his soul for his truck, I think he'd reasoned that he would be dead long before it was time for him to cash out. Given the life he was leading, it's a fair assumption.

At that moment in his life, the only thing Gunn cared about was the people in his care, namely Alonna. Getting himself killed keeping them safe? That's a hazard of the job. Getting caught trying to steal a car? That's a stupid risk that he shouldn't be taking.

Yes, selling his soul was also a stupid move, but it was also something that he didn't have to deal with until his time was up, and there wasn't any possibility that he would have survived until then anyway. By the time his deal came due, Gunn would have thought that Alonna would be safe and the people he had chosen to protect would have someone else to take care of them, that he would have made sure of.

Given the context, it's obvious he hadn't stolen a truck in 'the last three weeks' when Kate read out his file. He would have already had his truck, the deal was done at that pount, so there would have been no need for him to steal one.

In my opinion, the GTA occurred when he was a minor, where there was actually no risk of him being locked up for a lengthy period, considering he was, as stated, a minor, a child. It also could have happened before he realized what vampires were, before he got involved with his gang and before he realized he had to protect Alonna. When he figured out that vampires were really and a lot of them lived in LA, he realized that boosting cars and other unnecessary crimes were too big of a risk and found other ways to get what he needed.

Stealing for food, clothing, somewhere to stay, all of that was stuff that they needed that they couldn't get any other way, so risking certain people for that was okay, I think, in Gunn's eyes. But I don't think he would have done any of it himself because, as [MENTION=9799]Taake[/MENTION] and I both pointed out, he would have found himself too valuable.

And, before anyone says anything, getting someone else to steal a truck for him wouldn't have worked either, because getting caught driving a stolen vehicle, whether he was the one who actually stole it or not, is just as bad.

And we also have no proof that Gunn actually did commit all of the crimes Kate has listed in her little dossier. It wouldn't be the first time that police have got the wrong guy. A lot of the beat cops might have known of Gunn by reputation - leader of a gang of homeless kids who have been seen/caught stealing and fighting - and just assumed that he and his gang were guilty of whatever crime occurred in his neighborhood.
