Question Why doesn't Spuffy work for you?

Joan what i meant to say was not that we are not supposed to see our heroes dark or sad or making mistakes,of course a person goes through many changes in his/her life, there are so many difficulties...

but exploiting a vampire you are supposed to hate or don't like, having sex with him and then hate yourself or feel disgusted, allowing him to also exploit you...Buffy is supposed to have a strong, fun personality and in season 6 from what i can tell without having it watched(i have read many details in wiki though) she is self destructive and hates herself, she is not Buffy anymore, she is a shadow of her self...i feel really sorry for her and i totally understand her behaviour...she had noone to turn to(since her own friends pulled her out of Heaven without her will)...and she chose someone who she knew she didn't care about his thoughts...
I just would like to see her facing it in a different way,she has every right to be depressed and angry but what she does is corrupting her...and also i felt very sad that a person like Buffy, whom i love as a character, had to grow up in a very violent way...it's sad and i wish there was another way for her to find herself again

She does find herself again. After season 6. After she ends it with Spike.
Well it's not like Buffy I love. I think pre - Hell Buffy would never do that. I think she never would sleep with him if she never died. If they found the other way to stop Hell on Earth I think Spuffy would never exist.

But you know what? S**t happens. I'm also doubtful that things would have progressed with Spike and Buffy the way they did, had it not been for certain circumstances, but the circumstances were present and it happened and it also lead to their being another soulled vampire, so I'm not complaining lol.

I enjoyed Spuffy. I loved it as almost a requisite contrast to Ruffy and Bangel. I loved them all, it was all part of the journey.

Believe it or not, I partially agree. No, Buffy would not have engaged in a loveless, violent, demeaning, self-destructive sexual relationship with Spike if she hadn't died. The Buffy we know - her true self - I believe does associate sex with love (omitting, of course, her ill-fated affair with Parker Ass Face). But this not does not mean that Spuffy would have never existed. I think that, regardless if they had ever slept together, Spike would have sought a soul for her in an attempt to win her love. She felt something for him. There was no contest. Spuffy would have found a way to each other in some way.

Buffy was Spike's life. He lived for her, to earn her love. Sure, the incident in 'Seeing Red' as an excellent catalyst to propel Spike to have a real excuse to go and get a soul - but I think that even if that hadn't have happened, he would have still gotten a soul eventually. When you love someone, you'll do anything for their love, especially if you're a die-hard romantic like Spike. Surely, he would have never attempted to rape her if they hadn't shared that violent sexual relationship - but Spike would have gotten a soul anyway. That's what I believe.

Without the Spuffy sexual relationship, things would have gone much differently. Arguably, without the guilt from the attempted rape, Spike would have never gotten a soul, and as a result, had the desire to sacrifice himself to close the Hellmouth. Who else could have worn that amulet? He soul was a integral plot point.

Basically, what I'm saying here is that Spuffy was important to the plot.

I'm getting wordy again...better log off 😉

Don't get me wrong, but I don't understand why she continued after DT, knowing it was the wrong thing to do
Oh it's just in first 5 seasons I just understand her so well but in season 6 she was like a stranger to me. I don't know I guess I'm a person who doesn't enjoy that kind of relathionship or I just hate to see Buffy in that kind of relathionship.

For me, it was horrible. Spike loved her but he had that horrible sexual relationship with her anyway. And Buffy... she just used him to bits, and she did it because she hated herself.

I don't see how people could like that. I do understand that Spike loved her. I thought it was so sad in The Gift, after she died, and he broke down crying. And all those times about him telling Buffy he loved her. It was really sweet.

So, I would probably be a Spuffy (Second to Bangel of course) if they had a healthier relationship.

Also, I just felt like they don't fit. I LOVED Drusilla, I felt like her and Spike should've stayed together.

But, what about S7?
I'm firmly against souless Spike & Buffy having a relationship.

Let's say that they had worked through all the stuff going on in season 6 (Spike sleeping with Buffy instead even tough he saw it disgusted her to give in, Buffy overcoming her hatred for what Spike is, etc etc) and the almost rape was worked through without Spike getting a soul, they waited with the physical stuff until Buffy was compeletely out of her addiction to hurting herself and Spike, and Spike promised to once and for all stop doing evil stuff (like the eggs in As You Were) and they started to date, for real.

Spike would still be a monster, and I don't think Buffy could be with a man like that, walking down the street hand in hand with him, wondering how many people they walked by that Spike wanted to eat/rape/torture/kill.

I seriously doubt Buffy would let herself be with a man who has no soul. Or maybe it's just what I think, namely; That monsters should know no happiness. He doesn't deserve her. Maybe Buffy could overlook the monster in him. Nah. All that hating and self-loathing in Season 6 couldn't just be her depression and her hating that she used him, I think the biggest part was that she felt so good, being with a monster, which made her feel bad (which in turned made her turn to Spike to feel better, which made her feel bad again...)

Now, Spike with a soul is different. The monster is controlled and the consciensce is fully working. Now, I think Buffy and Spike could and should date and see where things go (for all we know they wouldn't be able to keep up a "real" relationship and break if off) but unfortunaly, she thinks he's dead and they're both to busy doing what's right anyway.

I found Spuffy a bit of a drag. It was basically Spike following her around like a lapdog for a couple of years. He was all ''please Buffy Please, i love you, i'm desperate''
So big deal, they have sex. Truth is Buffy wasn't in love really so i just didn't feel it. Its like Joss just wanted to keep Spike fans happy.

Fan service was not what Spuffy was about at all. Why would Spike fans want Buffy treating him like sh*t and like her personal sex toy and punching bag?
I think Spike following Buffy around was a sort of obsession. He had that chip in his head he couldn't hurt the Slayer anymore or anyone else...so basically he was a defanged vampire( i don't know if that is a correct term ) .He couldn't kill the Slayer so he got obsessed with her. And then this obsession turned into lust.

In season 6 maybe she enjoyed a few of her meetings with him...but when i see their sex scenes...i am always thinking "this is too rough" how can she enjoy this? so basically i think she tries to take pleasure from this action. She hates herself so much, she is angry with her friends for pulling her away from heaven but at the same time she doesn't say anything about being in Heaven cause she doesn't wanna hurt them. She is conflicted.

She considers all those responsibilities, like raising a teenager with problems on her own, finding money, supporting her friends, being the Slayer once again, a living Hell. Cause she was supposed to be resting, to be at peace.

When she is with Spike I see a melancholy in her eyes, a sadness I never saw before. It is a little weird for me to understand what is going on in her soul. Then she takes some pleasure and then she feels bad, a monster etc.

I just don't like it when a person is being humiliated.I am not blaming Spike here because Buffy in Smashed started it.I am not blaming Buffy either. Spike was obsessed with the Slayer, the Slayer was weak for the first time in her life and she finds comfort in him.I seriously believe that if anyone else was available, Riley for example she would probably go to him.And if Angel didn't have that damn curse anymore...I am more than certain Buffy would move to L.A(yeah I am such a fanatic Bangel looool). Spike takes adavantage of her.He definitely enjoys it but no love there cause when a man talks like that to a woman...I can only see a violent pleasure here and a sort of addiction.Nothing more. And i can't forget her words in Gone..."i thought we were having fun"... I don't know but that sort of quote coming out of Buffy's mouth,it doesn't suit her so well.

Season 7 is sth totally different cause i see trust between them.
IMO, there are lots of reasons Joss started Spuffy in the first place. And those reasons IMO, hardly include Spike and Buffy's true feelings for each other.

I would like to suggest to everyone that you spend a month arguing and supporting, even if a bit tongue in cheek, the merits of the "other side" of this issue, as I have, thanks to a diabolical Irish lady, and you might come to the conclusion that I have recently chosen. Though I have in the past, and will in the future, support one particular final solution to the question of who Buffy should wind up with, I can now see, and actually believe, that, as far as her love life is concerned, Buffy Summers exemplifies the Vulcan principal of IDIC. For those non-Star Trek followers on the Boards, IDIC is the belief that all of the universe id composed and arranged with Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, and that most certainly and accurately describes the Life And Loves Of Buffy Summers. From a borderline suicidal ex-serial killer, rapist, and self proclaimed perpetrator of "more deaths than the black plague," to a one night stand with a self centered stud wannabe who referred to her as a toilet seat, followed by a glorified boy scout, to an electronically restrained monster. and culminating, so far, with a young girl who loves her truly, but with her sights apparently now set on a friend who has been the closest thing to the brother that she never had, and with no end in sight, our favorite Slayer most definitely has illustrated perfectly that her taste in lovers is at the very least, varied. But that's a large part of the Slayer package, as an ex-lover pointed out, and I, for one, would feel somehow cheated with less.

May Buffy Summers live (and love) long and prosper.

Wishing Oceans agrees: But, what about S7?

Even though I prefer Big Bad Spike, I really did like how he and Buffy bonded in S7. I totally don't mind them having one of those really close relationships, but the idea of them being together just doesn't fit because like I said, I really ship Sprusilla when it comes to Spike being in a relationship.

Even if Spuffy's relationship was healthy, I still would prefer Bangel and Sprusilla to Spuffy because I just never thought Spike & Buffy were right for each other. However, I would think it was less icky. I thought it was completely icky until I saw that Spike really loved her, and then I didn't really mind. The relationship itself just bothered me because of how hurtful they were to each other.

I'm not a fan of relationships soley based on sex and I'm more into relationships that last, which probably explains the main reason I ship Bangel and not Spuffy.

Yeah, I like Sprusilla too. 🙂 But as shown in Crush, now that Spike is in love with Buffy they can't be together.

First off, they were never hurtful to each other once Spike got a soul. Secondly, in Potential, Buffy said: "Well, it depends. Sometimes that's how people relate. Being mean to each other. Even... Mortal enemies. And then with the, and that leads to no good, absolutely no good. And then it's over! Absolutely, positively, definitely over! And that's confusing too, the over part. Which it is, over!..... So, maybe." Buffy was obviously ranting about her relationship with Spike, and it really seemed like she was trying to convince herself. Also, in Something Blue, Buffy said: "isn't that where the fire comes from? Can a nice, safe relationship be that intense? I know it's nuts, but.. part of me believes that real love and passion have to go hand in hand with pain and fighting." She said it herself. 😀

I'm not a fan of relationships soley based on sex and I'm more into relationships that last, which probably explains the main reason I ship Bangel and not Spuffy.

I'm pretty sure that NO ship is going to last, ever. This IS Joss Whedon we're talking about. Besides, Bangel barely lasted itself. 🙂

Bad choice of words on my part. lol Believe me, I KNOW. lol I didn't mean last forever, I just meants relationships that do last (for atleast a while) and aren't just about sex 🙂

I'd argue, as many of us would, that Spuffy was not solely based on sex. Quite the contrary. In S6, yes, it was about sex - but in S7, they developed a mutual friendship that had nothing to do with sex. It had to do with mutual respect, affection, and admiration. That's when they were at their best, IMO.

Also, Bangel didn't really "last" in the general sense of the word. 😉

I kinda assumed(i know, i shouldnt assume) that Spike fans would like Buffy treating him bad. Like, would they really want a repeat of Bangel, all lovey dovey?

Right, which is why I have absolutely ZERO problems with their relationship in S7. I was glad they were so close, but I don't think they're right for each other romantically.

And like I said in my previous post, I just worded that wrong lol

Well, I suppose that's where Bangelers and Spuffies differ. 😀 I, and many of the writers, consider Spike to be Buffy's counterpart, her equal. The writers have said that even in S6 Spike was closer to Buffy than pretty much anyone else. They bring out the best in each other, they have passion, and I definitely think they have a connection.

As the lovely Joan said 🙂, the Spuffy relationship in S7 definitely wasn't all about sex. And, as I explained in my thread here (Spuffy: S6 Style - Buffy-Boards) the S6 relationship wasn't, either. So they had sex a lot. So what? Tons of people do. Doesn't mean they didn't have more to the relationship. Spike was the only person that Buffy could really act like herself around, and they did develop a friendship because of the empathy they had for one another. Buffy confided in Spike wth things she cuoldn't tell anyone else. Season 6 was a season of learning and exploration, in many areas. 🙂

I like Spuffy, but what I don't like about it is how they treat eachother like dirt which makes it alittle too sexual.

I like Spuffy, but I don't like how they treat eachother like dirt, because it can be sometimes too rough and alittle sexual.

Most things about season 6 made me want to gnaw my arm off but especially Spuffy.

"This isn't real but I just want to feel." How romantic! It's almost like she turned into a cutter. It says a lot to me that they had to have her come back from the dead, from heaven, for her to consider screwing him. Their scenes were gross to watch.

I don't buy that Spike was helping her find her dark side or whatever. She was starting toward that in Season 5.
