Because he fell in love with the slayer?, Because he is no longer a bad boy?, Because he helped the slayer to save the world? Or what? Please do enlighten me...😀 🙂

I'm a huge Spike fan, but I liked him better in earlier seasons. I HATED that he fell in love with Buffy. As a lot of people already know, I'm not a huge Buffy fan. I liked when he was a bad boy. He always had really funny lines. Spike was awesome on AtS. too. Yay Spike!

Because. He. is. The. AWESOME.

No, j/k. but seriously, I love his lines (Woodstock, a major cosmetics company, etc) Not to mention that James Marsters is hot like habeneros. I sort of enjoyed the 'Spike loves Buffy' storyline, mostly because it's so transforming for him. It was interesting in the 'soul' debate, and it was neat to see him moving from a selfish obsession sort of "love" to an actual selfless love. Plus he's just amusing.

For me I think it's his attitude of just LOVING to fight that makes him a good character. While most of the characters in Buffy and Angel will willing jump into fight, it's always about protecting something/someone, saving the day, or otherwise always to achieve some goal. Unless they are working off frustration or have gone a bit loopy (Riley on Initiative drugs withdrawl/Out of My Mind, Buffy "hunting" after the first slayer). Even Angelus picked his battles and mostly only fought with some purpose in mind. But Spike is in it for the thrill of the fight. Even when the Chinese slayer was kicking his butt he was enjoying it. When he found he could only hurt demons he didn't hesitate to take that up even though he probably knew it would make him an outcast amongst other demons and vampires and align him with his enemies, the scoobs. Though I'm unsure of how much he actually wanted this at this point. Was he already in love Buffy?

It's also his attitude and, as has already been said, he get's a lot of great lines. But the lines only come about because of his attitude/personality. I think the reason he started to suck in the last season and a bit of Buffy is because his love (obsession) for Buffy takes the edge off his attitude and he cares about more than just fighting and being Spike. The great lines about being evil, not caring what happens, etc. no longer work. When he comes into AtS he gets back that edge because of his continual conflicts with Angel.

totally agree.....good show old chum
I have no clue, I cant work it out, after season 3 I think his character became crap.

I really enjoyed Spike's humour and I think it added a lot to the show.

His scene with Joyce in Season 2 was hilarious....same with Season 3.

His "Hey I'm just a friend of Xander's dude" lol with the "American accent" had me rolling on the floor in Season 4.

His "Out for a walk b***h" was hilarious.

I agree with others though that his character declined after he fell in love with Buffy.

Personally I like Spike's character as a whole... I started in season 6 and watched season 2-5 a little before if not during season 5 of Angel. I think I fell in love with Spike's character the moment he got his soul back then realized in retrospect I liked him way way way more with Drusilla (Angel even) than Buffy.

For me I think I would have to ask why someone wouldn't like Spike.

Because he is a very complex and multi-faceted character who was portrayed by a very talented actor - James Marsters.

and there is that LOL.

I honestly can't understand why Spike became so popular. I think he is an aweful character. Especially in seasons 6 and 7.

Because it's adorable with a bad boy who just is so not a bad boy.. but you just have to admire how much he tries to be 😀
Seriously, I love Spike, but in most parts of season 7 he is just pointless, and I think a lot of Spike fans feel that way..

Spike is a popular character because he showed a lot of character development in the show. The audience got to see him change from bad-boy vamp killer into chipped, cant-be-bad-but-wants-to-be, into a souled vamp with humanistic qualities.

Spike became the character that everyone could relate to. Everyone has been bad in their life, and everyone has been floating along with nothing to do, and everyone has been spectacular at some point in their life.

And, as Anchovy said, and to which I strongly agree: Because he just is!

hey thanks for helping me out with everything
I have many times asked the same question, freakydorky. Im not sure why Spike was always the most poplular character on the show. Don't get me wrong, I like Spike, But he is not my favorite character. But the thing is that Spike was one of the most loved characters BEFORE he went through all those changes, and character development, thats why they kept him around. Because originally Spike was only supposed to be in a few episodes, before he got staked. But the fan response was soooo amazing, that they knew he would be good for ratings, and that people loved him so much that they had to keep him. They would be stupid to lose him. Which I agree with, Spike was a wonderful addition to the show. But sometimes I just dont understand what is so wonderful about it. Its not like hes a god. Hes a good character, and he brought a lot of great humor and other things to the show. But whatever....

I can understand why people liked Spike at first, I loved him and Drusilla together, I loved him and Angel 'fighting' with each other. But I found his character so irritating and annoying after a while, I think they should have never given him his soul back, he was still funny when he had his chip, but after that I think he became so boring, They completely destroyed Spike's character in season 7, I thought. And I HATE that he was the one that destroyed the Hellmouth, that really annoyed me!

Thank goodness he finally acquired his soul. If not, Spike would have remained stuck in that same bad-boy persona from his early years. And in the end, I suspect that he would become a one-dimensional character with no development whatsoever. Ugh!

But the bad boy persona was 10 times better then the crappy 'wimpire' persona he got in season 7

I completely agree!!
I always loved Spikes one liners. It was the comedy that made me love him I agree with Kimm, his line 'Out for a walk Bitch!', made me absolutely piss myself. It still makes me chuckle.

The only time I really didn't like him was when he was with Buffy, it just didn't suit him, although I know this was part of his characters develpment I didn't like it.

I completly agree with you, I love Spikes funny lines, but I did not like where they took his character.
