Why is Spike so popular?

Not speaking from obsession here. Just to clarify.

Spike's got dimensions - so many, in fact, that after two years after the show's demise, I still have yet to pick apart all that emcompasses Spike. And I've been studying the character since S2.

His whole persona is what drew me to him - his badass, I don't give a f-ck, I smoke cigarettes and I'LL FRIGGIN' KILL YOU thing. And he never lost that, even when he was chipped and souled. He was still my Spike.

He loves with all of his heart, with everything he can give to a girl. Spike's persona is based on love. It's who he is. It's what he is. And that's why I love the character in return.

And to be completely shallow, he's REALLY HOT. I mean really. He's not just hot - he's BEAUTIFUL. He has this whole aura about him - one that says he knows everything about you without having to know anything. He digs himself into your soul and roots himself there. Spike becomes a part of you - and THAT's why I think he's so popular.

This, of course, is all attributed to James' amazing acting prowess. Bow to the man that created Spike.

imo, Spike falling for Buffy and becoming good and getting a soul, is a good thing and necessary for 1 reason I can see right now: the character developed, they had to develope him somehow. would you rather he'd stay bad and the character wouldn't develope? Then you'll all be like: this character didn't develop, that sucks!
He couldn't stay bad, because the character needs to develope somehow somewhere.

I think Spike is a great character. I like when he fell in love with Buffy, it was even more unconventional than Angel. I liked that Spike would go and get his soul for Buffy, that's like the human equivolent of selling your soul for someone you love. Spike was always rash and impulsive, even when he had a soul. I don't think he became whimpy, he was adjusting to having a soul. Look at Angel after he got a soul. Remember in the last season of Angel when Angelus and Faith are in a dream-like universe and they go through all of Angel's past and they show Angel saving a puppy and listening to Barry Manilow? That's whimpy. lol.

I'm personally not a big Spike fan, but I think the reason he has fans is because he was the strongest male influence on the show, once Angel left of course. Xander and Giles were main characters and always there, but sometimes I felt like they were just there to fill in lines and make time, especially Giles. I can remember a lot of quotes that Buffy, Faith, Willow, Angelus, Drusilla, Spike and others have said, but I can't really remember any from Xander and Giles. In other words, Spike had something about his character that made you pay attention to him.

Xander has many funny quotes. "Bitca", "Can I be blind too.", "Party in my eye socket", "I'm sick of being everyone's butt monkey.", "I'm 17, looking at linolium makes me horny.", "He's primed, I'll be pumping him in no time... he'll give us information soon.", "5x4=30" There's many more.
Giles is hilarious too. "You have the maturity of a blueberry scone.", "I'm sure my books and I are in for a fascinating afternoon.", "Advantages of layers of tweed. Better than kevlar", "You must perform the ritual in a tutu.". Mainly Giles is the butt end of a lot of jokes, but he takes them in stride.

I am a Spike fan.... he bought so much humour to the show... the things he comes out with are hilarious.... there is not one time where i have disliked Spike... i have liked him from day 1!!!

I likd him until season 5, before then he was funny, quirky and a decent character. Lovesick Whiny Spike just got on my nerves and I never thought he had any geniue goodness in him, even with his soul, it was all for a reason, never just to do good.

Spike is popular (especially with women) because we all love a bad boy, excitment and danger, but we wouldn't want to bring him home to meet the family and because Spike developes so much we get to see him as a caring loving Spike, and so the man we WOULD bring home. Both sides are shown. He is a real 3 dimensional charactor and let's face it girls, we would love to try and change him from the bad boy......

If Buffy would've brought Spike home, it would be okay with Buffy mom, I mean she likes him. (I mean, if she wasn't dead or before she died).

I love spike! He is sooo unbelievably hot. its just the accent, and the fact that you can see his deterioration up to the episode where he attacks Buffy and I think you can totally feel for him, in season seven I love the relationship that buildsup between buffy and spike!!!!!I just love him!!!!!!!!!! lol

Spike IS AWESOME how can u not like him he is funny and hello HOT... he was great through out 2-7 of buffy and on angel ... great character!

Spike is popular because he is:

- Bad boy at points.
- A Vampire
- HOT
- Cool.
- Just an ideal character...

That's what I think anyways.

Spike was the perfect character. Sure, the show might have been called Buffy, but Spike's journey was much more interesting. I relate to Spike a lot more than I relate to Buffy. His journey to becoming a man was just better than Buffy's journey to becoming a woman.

This isn't my opinion, it's a well known fact, decreed by God himself. If you disagree with his judgement, then I have permission to slit your throat. And I will, ya know. I'll appear when you least expect it, and bam, its over for you..

Don't take my name for granted!

Spike is not that great really. He was so annoying throughout the series. He was ok in s2 and even s3, but in season four I hated him, in season 5 I liked his thing with harmony, but from then on I hated his character, he was so overused throughout the series, and then when I thought we were rid of him, he turned up on Angel.
