I think it was too difficult to follow for it to have been a generic TV series success. Plus, and I think this is something that had a big effect, consider the social/economic times that were effecting the lives of a great many people. After an entire week and months of terrible economic news and conditions, having to sit and watch a show that had such dark thematic material or a series that demanded that the viewer pay attention to everything that happens, it was just too much to have to sit through.
