We usually like certain characters more than the others. And other people hate the characters you love and like the characters that you don't. And I'm sure we don't just like the characters we like. Then why is your favorite character(s) your favorite?

There are so many reasons to why Xander is my favorite character, I'll start from the first moment I saw him:

1) Nicholas Brendon is so HOT! Can't tear my eyes off screen!

2) Oh, this Xander character lied to Buffy about Willow trying to put Angel's soul back. Interesting. This character is flawed. I LOVE FLAWED CHARACTERS!!!!!

3) Aw, Xander saved his friends, who think he's useless, and didn't tell them about it because all he needed was to gain a sense of confidence and importance. I LOVE HIM!

4) Need to read Xander fics! Xander/Spike? Who the hell is Spike? Whatever. Xander is there. Oooooh, that's badass! Ooooh, that's hot. SPANDER SHIPPER!

5) No, you're telling me that Xander doesn't end up gay and in love with Spike in canon? Lame! At least they have the sexual tension thing going on.

6) I love how I can relate to Xander so much. He doesn't shy away from saying what's on his mind. I like that.

7) I love how he fights those baddies even though he doesn't have superpowers. He's so brave.

8) As a woman I find myself more empowered by Xander standing shoulder to shoulder with people with superpowers and seeing himself as their equal than Buffy who has privileges I don't have.

9) Xander is totally fandom's underdog. That makes me love him even more.

10) Xander plays the role of traditional female characters in older novels. I love gender reversal!

11) Xander is such a complex character with flaws and virtues! That makes him real.

12) I love that Xander isn't badass. That makes him cooler in my eyes.

13) I love that Xander is okay with women being his leaders and being turned on by it.

I don't think i could pic a certain favourite one, but 3 of my favs are Buffy/Angel/Spike

Buffy just down to the fact that she's Buffy lol she keeps on going no matter what the odds are and will do anything to protect her friends, but she will also make the decisions that others can't to save the world, even decisions that will tear her up inside.

Angel, he's always been one of my favs, maybe even my #1, i just like what he has about him, he has a certain funny side that the others can't see (minus Buffy most of the time) plus he & Buffy were always my favourite couple on the show.

Spike i like in the same sort of way as Angel, he's always got a funny remark to make (especially in S4 when he's got the chip) and although we don't see a huge amount of it, i love the more "brotherly" scenes between him and Angel. Especially in The Girl In Question.

My favorite character is Giles. (Who saw THAT coming?) Reasons:

Anthony Stewart Head is smoking hot and has the loveliest voice, both for speaking and for singing.

Giles is kind, intelligent, bookish, slow to anger, and has a good sense of humor -- all qualities I admire in a person.

Giles *always* puts Buffy and/or the mission above his own self-interest. He has amazing courage. He risks his life without a second thought, and soldiers on through grievous injuries.

Giles' fatherly tenderness toward Buffy is so endearing that it just takes my breath away. I also like his fatherliness toward all of the kids. I like his role as "stalwart standing fast" -- always supportive, always on the side of his kids.

But he can be a BAMF when needed, as he was with Travers' minion in Checkpoint and with Glory's minion in ... the ep where Tara was "taken" and with Ethan Rayne in several eps and with the flaming baseball bat attack on Angelus.

He can also be a bit geeky, especially in the first two seasons, but that's charming too.

He has the ability to see the good in people despite their flaws, like with Faith.

He's not flawless, which is also appealing. But he seems self-aware and understands what his mistakes and shortcomings are.

He has a darkness to him that he has struggled to overcome - Ripper; and the Band Candy persona; and the dark side probably emerged when he killed Ben so ruthlessly.

I will probably think of more later.

YES. Until S7, at least.

you summed up my reasons perfectly
My alltime favorite and #1 is Drusilla.
She's insane but funny, dangerous but vulnerable, very wise but very child-like, she's mean but very sweet as well. I like the combinations. 🙂

I also like Harmony a lot because I can relate to her in a lot of ways.

I'm sure it's no secret that my favorite is Spike. 😛

He is simply the one that I relate to the most. He feels everything very intensely and I like that. I am the same way, though I think I may be better at hiding it than him. He was so driven by beauty that he felt the need to create because of it, through poetry, and I do the same through my artwork.

He is so interesting. And I really admire how aware he is of the world around him. He does actually know what he's talking about when he's talking about things he has observed and that makes him really believable as a vampire. He would have to be that aware and perceptive to live for a long as he has.

Also, there was that one time, he was reading when Buffy came into the crypt . . . and that was hot. LOVE guys that read.

I love reading all the Spike love. He's such a textured character, so well played by James.

Spike.

Which is surprising, because normally I like those suave evil guys like Angelus or The Immortal (from what we know of him). I'm not someone who admires wearing one's heart on one's sleeve, or love of sheer violence. More of the artistic sadist type. Just goes to show how awesome Spike is, to make him my favourite character.

1. He's badass.
2. He's hot.
3. He has platinum blond hair.
4. He's an anomaly among vampires--he can love so intensely and truly without a soul, and even sought out a soul for his love.
5. He wears leather trenchcoats.
6. Brilliant acting.
7. He's perceptive, which is so cool.
8. He's the Slayer of Slayers.
9. He was originally known as William the Bloody because of his bloody awful poetry. His human self was such a dork.
10. He killed his victims with a railroad spike in a sort of poetic justice.
11. He taught me the word 'effulgent', and I will never forget it.
12. Snarky!
13. Spuffy is the only relationship that Buffy has that I actually like.
14. He's been the Big Bad, the reluctant ally, the comic relief, the love interest, the champion...
15. Everything about him that I had a problem with during my first viewing of BtVS was nullified when I finished and saw his entire story in hindsight.

ETA: I thought of more reasons.

16. His entire relationship with Angelus, Darla and Dru.
17. He's impetuous.
18. His accent!

While there are few characters in this verse that I don't like I have to say that Spike is my favorite:

1. He loves to fight, and fights for love.
2. His first act as a vampire is one of love.
3. No matter how evil he gets, he is still capable of love.
4. He always keeps his word, even with his mortal enemy.
5. He goes to enormous lengths to hide just how smart, perceptive and well read he is.
6. He may be love's bitch, but at least he's man enough to admit it.
7. He's paralyzed by not caring very much, yet when he does actually care he'll go to extraordinary lengths.
8. He is always a walking contradiction.

These are just a few of the many reasons why Spike is awesome.

Reasons I love Willow:
- She's absolutely gorgeous. I love Alyson Hannigan. She's the picture of my perfect woman.
- She helps Buffy even though she doesn't have to. She had the oppurtunity to walk away, multiple times, and she didn't. She could have gone away to college, but she stayed. She could have stayed in England, but she came back.
- She's just so cute! I love her mannerisms.
- She's typically so optimistic. She tries to put a good spin on almost every situation.
- She goes through so much, but always comes out the other side.
- Willow feels so much. She loves with all she is. She doesn't half-ass it. She loves full force. She gives everything she does her all; dives in feet first. And when she commits to something, she doesn't back down.
- Most of all, I love how her character develops. We see so much change in Willow. In the end, she's a true hero. She changes the world. She goes from this timid little bookworm to a badass Wicca who changes thousands of lives.

wickedtiger86 agrees: These are all the reasons I love Giles too.
drizzlydaze agrees: YES. Until S7, at least.

Giles wasn't in season 7. Just some guy who looked and sounded a lot like him.

See, that's the beauty of being madly in love with a fictitious person. You can pick and choose which parts of that person you're just going to pretend never happened. 🙂

haha I like this
drizzlydaze agrees: Which episode was that, again?

I'm pretty sure it was in "As you were" right before the "Tell me that you love me" moment.

He also called Angel an Uncle Tom so I like to think that he's also read Uncle Tom's Cabin. 😛

I love this thread!! Diving into our loves. This is great!!!

For me, I have many many characters I adore but the be all end all is and always will be Buffy. Simply put, she is a hero, through and through. Even when she tries not to be, she can't help it. It's what she is.

Angel

- His dedication to atone for his sins.
- His determination to do the right thing.
- His ability to pick himself up and keep trying.
- His selflessness.
- I find his history is fascinating.
- He is gorgeous. 😉

Riley Finn

- His optimism.
- He is respectful, dedicated, supportive and loyal.
- He saw the best in Buffy, even when she was at her worst.
- His willingness to change perspective.
- He is gorgeous and plays basketball. 😀

Angel, because if at first you don't succeed... brush yourself off and try again. He keeps going, keeps trying, messes up and learns and tries again... he's far from perfect, I like that.

Connor - oh poor baby never got a chance. I love him partly because I feel no one else on the show but Angel really does and because I don't know, I guess I feel a sort of kinship with him. I really wanted him to get on the right track in his life as Connor because he had suffered so much and deserved it (again just a kid with too much burden on his shoulders).

I have lots of reasons why I love Xander and Wesley. Mostly because they are simply two normal guys trying to do what they can to make a difference in the world around them, however they can. They just want to help, and I love this about both of them.

From a comedic and purely entertainmetn standpoint I'm gonna go with Clem for obvious comedic reasons, one of which being how he treats dawn and his uytter friendliness.

But from a "whos is the best person, morally" I'm gonna go with Angel because he makes decisions in the best intrest of the greater good (except in season 8). He demonstrates all through AtS and BtVS that he is an extremely strong person, even with everythign he went through with Connor and the fact that he still fought through it

Tara

- We have a lot in common
- We're both socially awkward and quiet
- She's really sweet and the only one who doesn't turn evil
- She doesn't like war and looks on the bright sides of things (like me)
- Tries to make jokes that people don't laugh at (like me) 😛

I just love her.

Spike's my favorite character because I see so much of myself in him. He's so far from perfect, it's humorous... but that doesn't stop him from trying. And sometimes he tries and he misses... big time. But he learns and moves on. His story inspires me. And I love it.

Me and Oz are so much alike, it doesn't make any sense. We both are nonchalant, laid-back, are in bands, easy to get along with, and when triggered or provoked, can turn into a wild animal (although more rarely than every full moon.) Even though I talk more than he does nowadays, I used to speak only when something needed to be said. And that was that. 🙂
