I'm sitting here wondering why Spike is not a regular cast member in Season 3. Was it not until after JM's appearance on Lovers Walk that Joss et al realized they wanted to bring him back? And if so, why wait until season 4? Somebody fill me in on the details of this please! :smile3:

He was amazing in "Lover's Walk"! And how stupid was it for that gang to take on those three?
Yeah, that's pretty much it. I read it wasn't until "Lover's Walk" that Joss saw how well JM and the rest of the cast worked together. So, he decided to bring him back in s4 as a regular. I think he waited until s4 because he probably already knew how he wanted s3 to develop and proceed, which didn't include Spike.

I heard that it goes something like this...

When they made I only have eyes for you they realised that they didn't really want to kill Angel at the end of season two and that he was capable of carrying his own show. Joss and David Greenwalt then went on to develop the series for Angel. From what I have heard, James already knew that he would be coming back as a regular in season four by the time they did Lovers Walk and that that episode was to remind the audience about Spike and set in motion his return to Sunnydale.

I really don't see Spike having a place in season 3, which I guess is why Joss waited until season 4. There was already a lot going on in season 3.

I agree, I think it was enough to see Spike in 'Lover's walk' , there really wasn't space for him in s3 and he wasn't needed. Plus it made it more delightful and refreshing to see him once he returned for s4

I echo the previous two posters views. Spike wouldn't have fitted into the storyline in season 3, "Lovers Walk" was enough because he was so good in it.

My question is.. why the hell is he on the last s3 dvd? (Region 1) The only appearance he made in s3 was Lover's Walk. haha.

I think Joss saw how popular Spike's character was. He almost killed him off (remind me at which episode?).
Joss wanted to let James know personally, so he called him and James literally jumped up and down with joy. Cutie! (I'm imagining his jumping up and down in my head).

Same with Emma's Anya. She wasn't supposed to be back and become a regular, but the fans loved her.

Anyway, that's what I've heard.

They were going to kill of Spike in What's My Line Part 2 when the piano drops on him and Dru.

naaw, jumping james! :)
Ya I was glad he was only featured in 1 ep during S3, he was a great charecter during S2-5 but giving us to much to soon wouldve been awful. And ya dont know why they put Spike on a disc over Cordelia for s3.

I agree that there wasn't any real place for Spike in the Season 3 story line, but on the other hand, Big Bad Spike and Rogue Slayer Faith hooking up might have been very interesting.

Oh, that would have been awesome!!!

Well they couldve done that in S4 if they wanted. Spike still wanted to bring down Buffy and Faith was still rogue.

There was way to much happening in Season 3 for any more Spike then we already got. Everyone always moans about Season 7 having to much going, imagine if they had featured Spike heavily in Season 3? We wouldn't have had as much Faith background (I think they should have had more anyway, but that's going off topic), And there would have been less time devoted to Woz and Cander. Two storylines that I really enjoyed.

I love Spike to death, but definitely enjoyed that Season 3 was focussed on the scoobs.

Well, they almost did for one brief scene, even though Spike didn't really know that it was actually Faith taking Buffy's body out for a test drive. That one scene between James and Sarah in her Faith persona was arguably one of the hottest scenes of the series, sheer lust with not a trace of romance whatsoever. Hot enough for Spike to remember the conversation verbatim 4 years later.

that scene was completely hot!
People keep saying there would be no room for Spike in season 3. The writers would have found a way for Spike to work well in the season.

I don't think that Spike would have had a place, really in season 3. I mean, in the rest of Buffy isn't he supposed to be the pessimistic side of Cordy that viewers needed? Also Angel was there, so they already have a main vampire.

I was definitely disappointed in the absence of Spike in Season 3. When I saw his face on the last DVD, I got all excited, later to realize he's only in one episode. :confused2: They tricked me.

I believe that Spike was originally supposed to be a main character in season 2, and then only make small appearances. However, Spike ended up being one of the more popular characters on the show, so Joss added him to season 4, which explains why he's there but he was only the "wacky next door neighbor". It wasn't until season 5 where I felt they found Spike's purpose, not including season 2, they knew what they were doing with him
