Why Rachel Nichols is in The Inside

One of the most consistent criticisms of Tim Minear's The Inside is his choice of actress Rachel Nichols to play the lead.

Well it turns out Tim didn't choose her, and he couldn't get rid of her even if he wanted to, which I bet he does. Here's an article explaining it.

(Tonight at 9 on Channel 5) A young FBI agent with a dark past joins a team of serial killer profilers in a new drama series. Starring Rachel Nichols, Peter Coyote and Jay Harrington.

ABOUT A YEAR AGO, some executives at Fox approached producer Tim Minear with a problem: They had a show called "The Inside," starring a promising newcomer named Rachel Nichols as a cop who goes undercover in high school, but it wasn't clicking even after two different pilots were shot. These Fox suits gave Minear a clean slate, telling him he could do whatever he wanted, so long as he kept Nichols, the title and some kind of law-enforcement setting...

The Inside has also been getting criticism, because it's another crime story, and people expect more from the wild imagination of Tim Minear. Well did you notice he was locked into the crime story idea by the studio - Fox.

Here's an example of some of the criticism Rachel Nichols has been receiving -

The fact that Nichols fails to breathe much mystery or magnetism into her Agent Locke alter ego is key to why the opening pair of "Inside" installments inspire more shrugs than chills. And that might be why it wasn't the most brilliant move to center a series around an actress who -- while plenty easy on the eyes -- has problems with that whole believability thing. Her manner feels forced and, thus, disquietingly unconvincing. And the chemistry between she and co-star Peter Coyote is essentially nonexistent.

Is Nichols some executive's niece or something? Almost seems like the original "Inside" was designed to be a star vehicle for her. After seeing the premiere, it's hard to tell...she's just kinda bland, unengaging. The previews for future eps look interesting"”like the serial killer who kills potential serial killers.

The fact that Fox has another serial killer show in the works for the fall wouldn't seem to bode well...

Tim Minear promises us The Inside guys will be chasing more than just serial killers before the end.

And yeah there's a wall of this stuff coming in the fall. Bones and The Gate jump to mind.

Casting couch, heh. Hopefully the crap shows will fall away"”chaff from the wheat"”and the good stuff will stick around. We can dream...

I do like the little bits of dark humor they worked into the show. Peter Coyote's character, what a $%@&! Seems like an ends-justifying-means type guy. Hard to tell what he's all about.

I think one reason a lot of dramas that are truly plot driven tank is that their premise is too narrow, formulaic. I think Tru Calling had that problem. So it'll be good to branch out beyond psycho-killers.

Yeah I remember reading where Tim Minear had worked on a grossout horror movie before. It was Re-animator was it ? Hmm...

Hey, so that means he's worked with bimbos before. 🙂
