Why do you think Joss chose to locate Slayer Central in a castle in the highlands of Scotland?

My theory is that the location is isolated, so there's relative privacy to carry on their training without disturbing the locals, and (possibly) it's a relatively demon free region, so the day to day responsibilities of patrolling and slaying aren't an issue.

Well, it does have something like 700+ separate islands along with the mainland, so isolation is fairly easy.
Along with isolation, it is still fairly quick to go anywhere in the world when needed.
You can add that it is the ancestral land of the Picts and William Wallace for whatever inspiration that holds on independence.
Maybe Xander was a Trek fan and wanted to visit Edinburgh to learn the bagpipes so he could play Amazing Grace at Buffy's next funeral.

Or maybe Xander is a "Highlander" fan and hopes to meet Connor and Duncan's kinsmen.

LOL for the Trek comment. What good is a funeral without AG on bagpipes, anyway?
Scotland is a great place for you to get lost in and for others to lose you , so yeah great hiding place for a marked band of slayers x

It does seem like a bit of a random choice for the slayers to be camped out in the Highlands but it's a good visual idea for a comic, with them living in a huge castle and having the scenery of the Scottish mountains and lochs in the background.

Though it is a very good place to hide, it being quite an empty country, it is literally the middle of nowhere.

Good question!
I also think its the isolation that makes Scotland attractive, but its also close enough to the rest of the world for quick and easy slayer action when required. Like they could get isolation in say, Australia, but then they'd be too far away from everything.

i agree from there you can go about anywhere quickly

personally for me i think it gives kindda and old fashion mid evil magic feeling to it............ but thats just me

Well, my take was that the Watcher's council was based in England for a reason. Perhaps mystical, perhaps just tradition, but we know it certainly didn't start there. Giles was based in England, and knew the UK a lot more than the US, after all, he had only been there for 7 years. I can imagine him being instrumental in organising the new...organisation, so they would have probably moved nearer to him and any resources left by the Council. They would have gone to the highlands of Scotland because...well, you don't see many giant teenage girls wandering around in London, and they could take over a castle. Plus, it's really quite secret, and somehat unexpected, and the real Buffy is almost in hiding when not out on a mission.

Doesn't EVERYONE love Scotland?
I've yet to meet anyone who has BAD things to say about Scotland.
And yet, far enough away from most people that the whacko stalkers can't just bop off there to look for the Slayer compound....or maybe that IS the point, send the whacko stalkers who can't tell fact from fiction to go scour those 700+ islands looking for it.

Just the idea of that amuses me enough to be satisfied.

I hadn't thought about all of the islands, but maybe the castle is on an island and the Slayers control the whole thing. That would make it perfect for private training. Pizza delivery would be a problem though.
Although I still think Bosnia is the better choice because of our relative proximity to Middle East, Russia and North Africa, as well as the fact that we have sort of in your face wilderness and land mines fields from the last war which can be used for quite a defense strategy if needed, Scotland is much cooler. I mean, come on, you can walk around in a kilt without any under pants on! 😀

Britney Spears and Paris hilton would love that.
Joss seems to like this little area of the world for some reason.
Theres been loads of English characters, and a couple of Irish ones, then all the flashbacks in Ireland and England.
Now they are in Scotland? Id say he's definetly got a thing for this area.
But, is the any Scottish characters in season8?

'Cos Joss heard I was gonna go there and there's this whole arc where he's going to make the next major player slayer based on me 😛

No seriously, though...I would say for the isolation and at the same time the non-isolation. Not the first place you'd expect to hold fort which means no-one is going to come looking for you while you train and go about your business.

Although, I like my first answer better 🙂

Personally I think it was for the fuzzy puppy cows ;)

They had better not slay any Fuzzy Puppy Cows! They're SO DARNED CUTE!
Scotland is a good place to be isolated in but still close enough to one of the major world cities from where you can go anywhere in the world.

I think it must have something to do with the distance to the Council HQ in London (or former HQ... I guess Giles is rebuilding it?). All of the other reasons given make a lot of sense. The isolation, the terrain, etc. I wonder if this old castle was a property of the Council? It could make sense. They have been around for thousands of years, and to say their HQ could have once been in a castle in the remote Scottish highlands isn't too far-fetched.

***SPOILER FOR "NO FUTURE FOR YOU" ARC***

According to what Giles said at the first of the "No Future For You" arc, he IS the Council, which would seem to indicate that any sort of actual rebuilding has been postponed if not abandoned altogether. I suppose that it also means that Andrew isn't working for him anymore, which might explain why he's back in Buffy's crew.
