I was thining, when Anya and Giles went to visit the Bejoxa eye (sp?) it told them that Buffy's ressurection is why the First is here. I still refuse to beleive that. Think about it, I may be wrong, but this is just a thoery. Now Spike has a soul, the First shows up, and in Amends, it was toucherin Angel (vamp with a soul) does anyone think theres a connection? I do!

First of all you have to assume a strength of vision connects Amends to Season 7. You have to assume that whatever Joss Whedon was saying in Amends he is still communicating to his writers in Season 7.

Buffy writers are more concerned about series continuity than most, but you could hardly describe them as champions of the idea. If it amuses them to go off in a different direction they've been known to do it. Just observe the way Greenberg peverts the rules of Witch power from episode to episode to see what I mean.

Assuming the writers are still following where Whedon led in Amends though, you have a good point. In fact the first seems to dealing with Spike in a similar fashion to the way it dealt with Angel in Amends.

It prefers to have Spike and Buffy alive until whatever it's plan is, is ready to be acted on. However, the first is not locked into the idea of leaving Buffy and the souled vampire alive until the end. It was going to allow Angel to die, and it still thought it could make the plan work. In Sleeper it seemed to be ready to have Buffy either killed or turned. The First seems OK with the idea of breaking up the Slayer/souled vampire combo, but it would prefer to gain control of the vampire first.

There's a new wrinkle in Season 7. The first wants to have all the potential slayers killed first. What's that all about?

The eye said that there was a disturbance in the Slayer line, opening up an opportunity for the First Evil to act upon, something which had been caused recently. Giles was the one to draw the conclusion that it must have been Buffy's resurrection, but who is to say that he was correct? There may be something entirely different that we don't know about yet 🙂

"Yeah, like the fact there are currently two slayers alive."

That is an option, but it has never been stated. It should also be noted that 'the disturbance' was blamed for The First being able to 'attack the line of Slayers', not for the First actually being back in town.

It's entirely possible that the explanation for it actually showing up could be something as simple as the weakening of a mystical barrier. The First showed its face initially shortly after Angel had his soul returned and a few months later being restored to 'life'. Now Spike has had his soul returned and Buffy has been brought back to the world. Perhaps them constantly ripping things from other dimensions and returning them to the Buffverse has weakened some kind of mystic barrier that was keeping it out (something got rid of the 'True Demons' and kept them out, a mystical barrier seems as good an explanation as any). Keep in mind, this is just a suggestion and not canon in any way (if it is that it was just one heck of a lucky guess) we have yet to see any of this stuff actually be explained.

Now lets see you define what 'recent' is for a giant eyeball who supposedly knows just about everything that has ever happened and could possibly be immortal. Not so easy, eh? By 'recent' from its perspective it could be refering to something about the First Slayer. We just don't know, and what the eye told us was unnecisarily vague, that spells trouble. You have to watch Joss, he's a sneaky bugger.

I had never actually thought about that before. Hmmmm.

BTW here's what Beljoxa's eye says, exactly:

GILES
Are you saying that The First will succeed in"”in wiping out the line of slayers?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The eye sees not the future, only the truth of the now and before.

ANYA
Yes, we've all got that"”it's called memory. Can you help us out with something a little bit more demony?

GILES
If The First has been around for all time, then why hasn't it attempted something like this before? Why now?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The opportunity has only recently presented itself.

GILES
Opportunity?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The mystical forces surrounding the chosen line have become irrevocably altered, become unstable, vulnerable.

ANYA
Something The First did?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The First Evil did not cause the disruption, only seized upon it to extinguish the lives of the chosen forever.

GILES
Then what has caused the disruption? What"”what is responsible for letting this happen?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The slayer.

The eye never did say that the slayer was responsible of the disruption in the line of slayers. But the chosen line, so maybe the chosen line is somewhat related to what the shadow men also said to buffy Buffy that she was the last guardian of the hellmouth, not the last slayer.

Maybe we are all off in the wrong direction here? 😉

I think the first is trying to wipe out all potential slayers first, that way when he kills Buffy and Faith, there will be no one to replace them.

Totally agree 100%. I posted something about this a couple of months back. The preoccupation of The First with Vampires-with-a-soul seems to be pretty consistent. Possibly with Angel, The First unknowingly had the wrong Vamp, or possibly it doesn't matter which, as long as the soul criteria is there.

As for Buffy being ressurected, I got the feeling that it was the first time that caused the disturbance, not the second. My conjecture was also that there was possibly an issue with the central power driving the slayer line. I don't believe that it just multiplies in and of itself, as I didn't believe the source was infinite. That conjecture has gained alot more credence after the episode where Buffy goes through the portal, in my opinion. It's still nothing but a theory, but hey, aren't theories fun?!? 🙂

Knowing what we do now (and having never read a spoiler - it takes the fun out of theorizing) I would guess that there's still an issue with that power. Clearly Faith is no weaker than Buffy, at least not physically, so that isn't an issue. That leaves me wondering how 2 slayers have inherited equal power from what is now definately known to be a finite power source. One possibility is that some of the power is noramlly detailed towards manipulating events or cosmic balances to keep The First out of the picture. I'm sure there's lots of other possibilities tho. Maybe Buffy has ended up borrowing her (reborn) share of the power from the NEXT slayer line (kind of a time-transcending event). That would certainly explain why the First chooses now to act, and also why Buffy is described as the 'Last Slayer' or 'latest in the line' (Not sure about this one, but I heard someone mention something about this earlier in the forums). Anyway, just theories. Dust in the wind 😉
