I think I found a way to explain the apocalypse in The Gift, and why it was so important. I think this makes sense, all comments are welcomed

------------------------------------------------------------

The monks made the key human, and as a human being it has the capacity of dying. If the portals had been opened with the ball of energy, it would have never died and the chaos and destruction the monks and knights feared would have happened.

But they made it human, so it can die, which means the key would stop existing.

But the monks did another thing, they created Dawn out of Buffy. "My blood is your blood yadda yadda yadda"

Glory used Dawn in order to open the portals, so in theory the only way for them to be closed would be Dawn dying.

But as the monks created Dawn out of Buffy, a weird situation presents itself, if Buffy dies in that moment in the place where the key had to be in order to open the portals, it closes them because Buffy's life is linked to Dawn/The Key.

Let me explain that a bit more, it's not that Buffy was a second key, what happened is was more of a hack into the "system" of the portals. (Think of it as the 2 slayer things, something that shouldn't be but somehow happened)

So, in my theory the portals were closed in a "loop-hole". (if you need another example to understand this, imagine the movie Dogma, Bartebly and Loki were returing to heaven because of a loophole in catholic dogma, here Buffy closed the portals becuase of a loop-hole in the way the key worked.

I'm not sure if I explained this the right way, but if you have any questions just shoot whether it's here or if you want more personal answers, you can find me at 66718145 on ICQ

I don't get it!

I explain it up untill here:

So, in my theory the portals were closed in a "loop-hole". (if you need another example to understand this, imagine the movie Dogma, Bartebly and Loki were returing to heaven because of a loophole in catholic dogma, here Buffy closed the portals becuase of a loop-hole in the way the key worked.

I haven't seen any of those movies, and I think this thing might be crucial to understanding your theory!

actually is not crucial...

dawn's death would have stopped the apocalypse because the key's energy would cease to exist... but she doesn't die, instead buffy jumps and dies in the same place the key would have to be in order to open the portals (the place where dawn's blood opens it), she has the same kind of blood dawn has, so by dying there, the portals close...

let me put it in this way, the portals needed dawn to die(the key to stop existing) in order to close, when buffy dies they "THINK" (note the "" 's) the key has died and close, when she actually didn't

i used the second slayer as an example, because it does have a similarity (buffy dies, the slayer choosing system or whatever that is THINKS he's gone for good, so Kendra is called, but she really wasn't gone for good which means there are 2 slayers now)

does any of my babbling make sense? you tell me...

PS: you should check Dogma out, really really friggin funny

This is nothing really new is it? So, what are you suggesting, that the portals could in fact still open?

PS: I've heard it might be good from several people, I'll definatly do that, when I have time!

No no no,i'm saying that buffy dying closing them was kind of a "glitch" in the "system" of the portals

O ... so is any of this relevant to something in the future, I agree that in could be a glitch, but so what? ... there is another "close only"-key ... doesn't really seem like such a big deal.

The only thing that I wonder about is how Glory would have performed the bleeding ritual if the Key would have been turned into Buffy's new Dinnertable, instead of a sister!

I think you don't get why i brought this up in the first place, this is my explanation for something that most people consider a plot hole.
According to me, if you consider this explanation, there is no plot hole at all...

I never really thought that there was a plot hole as it is all explained in Buffy's epiphany about the Gift she was told about on her quest in the desert. (ie Death is your Gift!). She figured it all out before she jumped and died which put all the pieces of the puzzle stretching over pretty much the whole of the season...ie the monks saying they made Dawn out of her and Spike mentioning the blood.
All holes regarding the dimensional rips were filled in at that moment before she jumped.
I didn't realise anyone thought there were any plot holes!!

Yeah, the thing is Gregor says in Spiral that if the key is activated i'll open all the dimension yadda yadda yadda, and it sounds like an apocalypse and all, but then in The Gift, it seems like they open the portals, dawn dies five minutes later and then they close, so there's no point in all the fight trying prevent... but i think i got my explanation, which i like and i'll stick with it

sweet_tooth2002 is correct.

Lorne The Host, if you read too much into the story, you're just asking for trouble. My explaination for any apparent plot hole caused by Gregor's line:
GREGOR: You misunderstand. Once the key is activated, it won't just open the gates to the beast's dimension. It's going to open all the gates. The walls separating realities will crumble. Dimensions will bleed into each other. Order will be overthrown and the universe will tumble into chaos ... all dark ... forever.
is that he wasn't as smart as he thought he was. 🙂 Also, please most especially note the word bleed. The "previously on..." they use later makes sure to use that word again. It's pivotal because, in the end, regardless of anything that dopey knight may have said, "it's always got to be blood. " It takes blood to start the gates openning and it takes blood to get them to close again. Just because Giles and everyone else thought the only way to close the gates was to kill Dawn doesn't mean they were right. Besides, these people were almost right. They thought that Dawn had to die to close the gate, but it turns out it was good enough for Buffy (her sister) to die in Dawn's place.

The gates are closed, Alleycat. If they were still open, you'd notice 'cause there'd be dragons and lightning bolts everywhere.

I think the big plot hole is what happened to those lightnight bolts and dragons after the portal was closed. Did they just disappear after the portal was closed, which make no sense, or what? They destroyed a lot of buildings, wouldn't any of the people of Sunnydale notice this?

🙂 You'd think they would, wouldn't you? Buffy and Angel have always been like that. It's strange, but apparently, no matter what happens to the humans, at the end of the day, they always forget about the demons and go back to normal once the attack is off. They're like sheep or sims or something.

I can see how this is a plot hole. And I can see how it would distract some viewers from the show and be annoying. But I don't go in for conspiracy theories much in the first place. So, to me, the idea that all the peoples of the world quickly forget a dragon attack after it happens is only a little harder to swallow than the idea that there are all these demons and vampires all over the place and yet somehow only a small minority of the population is aware of their existence. Oh and let's not forget the android humans. And the Initiative. And all the rest, it's all pretty nuts and comic-book-ish if you try to analyze it.

Okay, so you want my personal explaination for what happened after the gates closed? Here it is. I just made it up, but it sounds good to me:
After Buffy sacrificed herself to close the portals between our realm and all the others, most things fixed themselves. A lot of the forces that were playing here were automatically banished because they hadn't been here long enough yet to get a firm hold. This includes lightning bolts and dragons.

However, that's not to say that everything left. It's possible that a few creatures were able to get into hiding and are still here. Heck, maybe there was even a dragon that managed to stay behind. It could be some other good guys took out the dragon (Riley and company?) while the scoobies were pulling themselves together.

Now about the destruction and the dead people... well, these things happen, don't they? Perhaps they'll chock it up to earthquake and thunderstorm all rolled into one.

Btw--for those that write Buffy/Angel fan-fiction--you should be paying attention here. 🙂 A plot hole is really just a story waiting to be told...

The thing is no matter if I try not to, i always find plot holes and mistakes in movies or tv shows, and i can't stand them... so i always make explanations for me...

Like Spike's age, the book was wrong when Giles read it, and maybe spike was bragging about his age when it was written...

If you want to explain plot holes then explain to me how the heck Spike was able to flit to the other side of the world at the end of season six so he could see that demon and face those trials. I mean--did he just stow away on ships all the way over? But if he did that, it seems like it should've taken longer for him to get there and back.

Then again, I guess he was gone for the whole summer, from the scoobies's point of view. So perhaps some of what we saw of his adventure actually occured after Willow tried to destroy the world but before the summer was over... whatever. When I was reading, then later watching, season six, that was something that always bugged me.

I'm weird I guess: The populous not being upset over attacking dragons and stuff? I accept that easily. Spike getting to another continent with no explanation? That I have trouble with. 🙂

Spike going to another continent, what's wrong with that? we don't know how much time he took in that, could've been half the summer, and any way... if you remember when he first appeared in School Hard he and Dru had come from Prague which isn't exactly North America so i find no problem there, maybe he can take a plane, not necesarily direct sunlight, or he could hide with the luggage, or the simple "took a cruise" explanation

Maybe Spiked stayed in Africa for a while, before he returned to Sunnydale!

Your conspiracy theory reminds me of the time we see Xander reading a newspaper(Forgot the ep) And the headline says, "MAYHEM CAUSED. MONSTERS CERTAINLY NOT INVOLVED, OFFICIALS SAY"

That episode was 'Once More With Feeling'
It was the musical episode, so it was very light hearted, and not to be taken seriously. I don't think that that headline would have appeared in any other episode. In fact you could argue that it was a 'prop'. After all, there was stage lighting, and the occasional instantaneous scene change.

I sorta realised that whole "The Gift" supposed plot-hole or whatever when I actually saw the episode. I didn't even know that people didn't understand that... it was kinda simple to realise, in my opinion.
