Why the Xander hate?

Also, that's just plain rude. Nobody, whether your rich, a snob, or whatever deserves to be treated that way by anyone, least of someone who is supposed to care about you.

All is fair in war and love, it was once said. Given how Cordy was so condescending to Willow and Xander, it actually starts to make sense.

From "Bad Eggs":

Xander: Well, you know, it's the whole "sex leads to responsibility" thing, which I personally don't get. You gotta take care of the egg. It's a baby. You gotta keep it safe and teach it Christian values.
Willow: [frowns] My egg is Jewish.
[beat]
Xander: Then teach it that Dreidel song.
Willow: [smiles happily]

So...I kind of lean towards the idea that Xander is a very casual Christian or maybe just agnostic, like Buffy seemed to be.

I doubt any of the Scoobies are Christian lol, but I agree that they're probably agnostic about human ideas of God/gods

I honestly don't think it works quite that way, but I'm not gonna get into this argument with ya. I just think it's rude and it doesn't matter what kind of person Cordy was, she just didn't deserve that. And it doesn't make sense, either. It's just two people hurting two other people for sake of hurting two other people, is what it all boils down to.

But, like I said, whatever. :/

Cordy deserved it at that time - she was a snob.
Besides, the rich get over these things faster than the rest of us, by spending money to for self-gratification.
I agree Cordy was a snob for most of her time in high school... But I felt her relationship with Xander was making her much less snobish. I was enjoying the changes in her character. And feeding into the "money will solve your problems" thing that so much of America has going on is really unhealthy. I don't think the rich get over these problems faster than the rest of us... but they ignore them by buying stuff. They're people too with feelings and emotions. And no, given how condescending Cordy was, it doesn't make it any better. I don't wish anyone getting cheated on, but maybe you need to be to understand how that feels. Put yourself in her place... no one deserves that.

I agree and I don't think Xander cheating on Cordy can be justified at all. She was mean to them, but as I recall Xander got in a fair share of slut-shaming and mean comments about Cordy. That doesn't justify anything for either party, but it does put in perspective Xander and Cordy's acquaintance and romantic relationship. Xander wasn't just a passive victim here.
They were a couple. Xander lied and cheated. He's in the wrong, no matter their pasts. It may make sense for Xander and Willow to cheat together (although I wouldn't say so for Willow necessarily...Oz! 🙁) but that doesn't make it okay.

Hahahaha, don't worry about it. I will be happy to accept repayment in the form of twelve handcrafted matryoshka dolls. :D
I'm really starting to hate Xander now in favor of Wesley.

There's grounds for that: My 3rd and 4th OTP after Tillow and Dander is Weda and Wesley/Willow, and I'm ethnically British/Chinese.

What's Weda?
Although he makes mistakes, I think Xander's heart is in the right place. (Maybe not when leaving Anya at the alter, but...)

I adore Xander most of the time.

Sommers Summers, I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I am thoroughly confused LOL. 😀 😀

I'm guessing Weda is Wesley and Cordelia? What does shipping that/hating Xander have to do with your ethnicity?

zobothehobo agrees: Weda is apparently Wesley and Dawn

I'm even more confused now LOL.

Ah, I was confused by the Chinese part. I'm Chinese too btw. :)
Okay even though Xander did some messed up things I still love him. He may not be my favorite but I do like him a majority of the time and he was so cute in the early seasons. He may have flaws all the characters do and Xander is just Xander.

I do see why he is hated because of like you said the Kick his ass line and other stuff like leaving Anya and all that stuff. I just don't hate him. He was hypocritical that may have been his biggest downfall.

Reading this thread is very interesting.

I didn't like Xander because in the later seasons he tried to act tougher than he actually was, he was talking so much crap to Spike and the reasons he could was because of the chip and the fact Buffy was protecting him

Well, honestly I think Xander was plenty tough and with reason. He grew up, manned up so why should he stand on his own two feet and speak his mind?

Also he had every right to talk crap about Spike - a known killer - just like he had every right to do the same about Angel before that.

Xander's viewpoint on vampires was pretty much cemented in the very first episode of the show when his best friend was killed - he didn't like them.
"Harmless" or not he didn't like them.
He accepted some of them thanks to Buffy yes but that doesn't mean he should have given up his own stance in the matter.

And even without chip or Buffy's protection Xander would have spoken ill of Spike... cause he still wouldn't have liked him...

Just my two cents 😉

Known killers should be talked down to in Xanders opinion right? Unless he's sleeping with one.

Yep. Xander is a hypocrite.

And I love him for it.

Yeah, he has an issue with vampires, and not with vengance demons. This makes complete sense. The very first day he discovered their existence, they murdered his best friend. So he kinda cements his view on them then ("I don't like vampires. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they're not good."). It's not like his view on them isn't reinforced afterwards - even the seemingly trustworthy Angel ends up murdering a friend. He's got a staunch - and understandable - belief set in his head that vampires=bad.

With Anya, he doesn't have any specific beliefs regarding vengance demons. His mind doesn't immediately jump to "evil" and so he finds it much easier to forgive her past sins. Is this 100% fair? No. Is Xander human? Is a a 3-dimensional character with flaws that make him more interesting to watch? Hell yes.

I think Xanders a great character, he adds an all too human dimension to the show which could otherwise get lost in favour of a bunch of superheroes with special powers. I see why he says what he does about angel to buffy in becoming, just as I can see why Buffy acts how she does in Selfless aiming to kill Anya. Love blinds you to moral decisions that the friends around you think they can see so clearly, it's a recurring theme in BTVS so to single out Xander for hatred here is a bit harsh.

I see the Xander interactions with Angel and Spike as typical male banter, and it makes for great comedy and at times drama to watch it. Its not Xander being right or Xander being wrong, its just Xander being Xander.

For the first two seasons he really bugged me with his buffyfatuation. Up until the second episode of season three. Then he started to evolve with some setbacks of course, but like Wesley he got better. Although I definitely liked Wesley more than Xander in the end.

Oooh, I'm the opposite. Wesley bugged me a lot when he went all dark with guns. Too boring. Love him more as a dork.

As for Xander, I love him in every season, there's something about him that's so human and makes him more attractive than the other characters, who tend to be written as fictional and not real people IMO.

Yea i can see your point of view. But, Xander would constantly say things that sounded like he wanted to fight...when the only reason he could was because he knew Spike had his chip and that Buffy would always protect him. He was always a cheerleader in my mind. Plus, for a character who was responsible for a lot of the comedy on the show I didn't think he was that funny, Anya, Spike, Oz, Cordelia, Wesley, Willow, Harmony and even Andrew were all much funnier in my opinion. I'm not much of a Xander fan lol

I can't believe I never posted in this thread. I really do hate Xander. I'm one of the few that would have preferred it if he died. I really wanted Caleb to finish him off 😛

Anyways, as hilarious as he is, he just always kinda bugs me. He said the wrong things, at the wrong time. In the midst of terror and fright, he would just make a stupid joke. I understand that people have different reactions to different situations, but I mean it just isn't right. "The world is ending? Well can it at least wait until I finish this last cookie?". I mean, I know even Buffy herself joked but when it came down to it, she buckled up and fought.

Also, Xander has this tendency of opening his mouth, and inserting his mouth.

The only thing right now keeping me from not wanting him dead, is
seeing where his relationship with Dawn takes him, and the fact that in s8, he has, indeed, become more of a responsible person and well rounded.

Agreed. Xander was annoying 99% of the time

Nah, I would say that is good example why I always liked him. 🙂
