Why was Dawn sent to Buffy and not Faith?

The monk told Buffy that he knew "the Slayer would protect the key," so why did they send Dawn to Buffy and not Faith? By this point, Buffy was not "the" Slayer.

Did they feel Buffy was more stable and responsible than Faith?

You bring up a good point though. Like, would having a sister make Faith's past less dark?

I think the reason was Buffy was better for her, but the idea of her being sent to Faith is an interesting one. I think it would have a massive impact on how she behaves and if she had to take care of her it would really limit where she could go and what she could do. I think it would either make Faith more responsible or perhaps make her go extra crazy 'cause she's sick of having to take care of her sister!

If she went to Faith, that would make Dawn the sister to Faith. Faith was important to the series, but, she was not always around. Second, I just do not see Dawn as the side kick to Faith – they are like oil and water. Third, even that Dawn was not really the biological sister to Buffy: ‘Buffy was more like a mother to Dawn then a sister.’

This is seriously something that never crossed my mind.

I do wonder . . . if they did give the key to Faith, her whole life could sort of be rewritten.

Could she have ended up not going to jail in the first place if she had had a sister to look out for?

Actually, that would've been more interesting to watch than Buffy/Dawn. Not that I don't love their relationship, it's just Faith is far more troubled, and it would be so interesting to see how Faith would react to suddenly having a sister. It would change her completely.

except she would have remembered having one all along, like buffy and her mum and the scoobies remembered dawn always having been a part of their lives. so maybe she would never have needed to change or never have been as troubled in the first place. and maybe that would make her character less interesting for us.

If Faith HADN'T been in jail, I think that having Dawn be Faith's sister would have been quite interesting up until the first time that Dawn pitched one of her screaming fits, at which time Faith would have thrown her out the nearest available window, regardless of how far it was to the ground.

Did a Google image look up with the key words "˜Dawn Faith Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and found nothing of the two women? With the two pages, I got nothing with any image with both Dawn and Faith in the same picture. Thinking about it, I cannot really recall a time when Faith and Buffy were the only two people in the same room or any other place. Faith and Dawn was not on the show all the time, so there would not be a reason for the women to confront each other.

Intersting question. Buffy had already died, and the slayer line had moved on. Dispite Faith being in jail.. I would think the Monks would have went to Faith.. Or wait.. when/how did they know when to add Dawn into Buffy's life.. Faith wasn't always in jail either. When did this spell happen again? During Season Five, or went Buffy was born, or a long time ago.. now im all confused, hah

The spell pretty much was cast right before we got to see Dawn... during "Buffy vs. Dracula".

Basically, I see Dawn getting sent to Buffy as yet another piece of evidence that Faith is not "the" Slayer. There are two perfectly identical-in-weight Slayer lines past Prophecy Girl, and Dawn was sent to one of the Slayers - either randomly, or because Buffy was the more accessible of the Chosen Two. (And yes, there was an unseen Third Slayer called after The Gift... just to get my ceterum censeo said. 😉)

I'd like to think it would be because Buffy had more of a family unit where Dawn would have fit right in. There are more people surrounding Buffy who could look out for Dawn than there are for Faith. For example if she was with Faith, considering Faith and Buffy's rocky relationship, there would have only been Faith looking out for Dawn which may have meant Dawn would have got into trouble with the minions/Glory well before they actually found out that she was the Key. Whereas with Buffy, Dawn had many people willing to risk their lives to protect her therefore having more chance of suceeding in hiding the key for as long as possible.

Does this make sense or have I just waffled on? haha

As others have said, Faith wouldn't have been the best option, unless the monks re-wrote a big part of her life. It seems much safer to just put the Key in a proven-to-be-healthy family, protected by a stable non-in-jail slayer. Besides, chances are less people knew were Faith were, so the monks might not have known where she was.
