Why was Holtz chasing Angelus and Darla

Now IIRC The Quickening we see a flashback of Holtz and his followers thinking they have found Darla and Angelus. At the same time the two vamps are at Holtz' home killing his wife and child. Now what was Holtz' reason for chasing Darla and Angelus before- was he just a vampire hunter or was there another reason. I can understand him doing it after his family was killed by them but this flashback clearly shows he was doing it even before.

So what do you think, was he just a vampire hunter by nature or was there another reason, his father or someone killed by Angelus or Darla
 
He's a vampire hunter and it was orginially stated (somewhere, I can't quite remember) that he had been chasing after Angelus and Darla for quite a while. 🙂
 
Right okay, if anyone can tell me where it's stated I would be grateful
 
I do believe that Angelus and Darla (and the rest of the gang)killed his family...that is why he did what he did with Wesley/Angel in the present...
 
Holtz was a vampire hunter, that's why he firstly hunted Angelus and Darla. Then he was out for vengeance. Here's some of the conversation between Angelus and Darla in The Trial (from a flashback in France, 1765):

Angelus: "This man, Holtz, how does he keep finding us?"
Darla: "Well, we stay in the best hotels, order room service, eat the waiters - people talk."
Angelus: "Holtz is no mere mortal, I tell you that."
Darla: "Of course he is. He's just a man, a vampire hunter."
Angelus: "Yeah. Good enough to have driven us into a stinking barn like animals."

I know that quote but it takes place after the killing of his family which occured in 1764. As far as I know the only evidence that suggests Holtz was a vampire hunter before his family were killed is the scene in the Quickening. This flashback doesn't really give a time period, he could have just been a hunter for a couple of months before his family were killed for all we know, he could have started with other concerned citizens when Angelus and Darla become a public menace. As far as I know never does it say that Vampire Hunter was a career for Holtz before 1764 and it definitely did not start because Angelus and Darla killed his family
 
Maybe it's just something we're supposed to assume. I mean, I probably assumed it since I don't know where it was stated. I do tend to assume things... 😉

Well, sorry then. I haven't seen very much of Season 3, so wouldn't know about the scene you're referring to.
It most probably is something we're just supposed to assume. 🙂
 
Holtz, in addition to apparently having noticeable military experience, also had a rather puritannical black/white, good/evil, no compromise personality, which was presumably a big motivator as to why he became a vampire hunter before revenge for his family entered the picture.

(Holtz as a type actually belongs about 100 years *before* he was first seen chasing Darla and Angel, but hey, there are always a few fanatics among us.)

Yes he does, I'd forgotten that his 'faith' may have been the reason he became a vampire hunter

Really how so, I'm not really a history buff so I wouldn't know

To oversimply grossly, the 1700s were the "Age of Reason" -- science, philosophy, questioning the nature of God, exploring those "gray areas".

The 1600s had hordes of *real* Puritans (and their opponents) running around being willing to die for their religion.

(Actually, I believe Holtz was a Catholic -- I think he said something about a Cardinal officiating at his wedding -- but faith is faith, and fanaticism is fanaticism.)

if you were a vampire hunter back then you were naturally going to want get rid of the most destructive, deadly ones. PS i think it was holtz's fault that angelus and darla killed his wife and kids - he got his family involved by hunting them endlessly.
 
I will say that his house didn't seem to have many anti-vampire safeguards, like strategically placed crosses and garlic...

Problem is that they are of very little use- is garlic even an vampire repelant in Buffy/Angel- Crosses will repel them but not that much

I believe Buffy explicitly names garlic as a vampire-repellent in "Welcome to the Hellmouth" or the following episode, although you don't see it used a lot.

Crosses you do see used a lot, and fairly effectively, although some vampires seem less easily repelled than others.

Actually it was Xander that said 'Okay, so, crosses, garlic, stake through the heart.' Buffy just says that will get it done but she probably was a bit busy to correct him. Perhaps garlic has less of an affect than crosses so is rarely used

It seems stronger vampires aren't as affected by crucifixes- that would make them barely a problem to Darla at that time IMHO
