Why was the focus on Buffy and not Faith?

Welcome! And you're right, it was sloppy writing. Too much of S7 requires a lot of fanwanking to make any sense.

Ok "Fanwanking" is the greatest term in the history of the universe. I spat coffee out when I read your post and although I got the jist I googled it too. I actually did "lol".

Buffy was very obviously the one true Slayer. Even if Faith was the Slayer too and all of that. It was the same when Kendra was alive, even though 'offically' a new Slayer had been called, there was no denying the Buffy was the one true Slayer. I think people can sense that, it's obvious in the way she carries herself also.

I remember in one episode in Season Seven Buffy was listing who was going to get killed of. It was the Potentials, then Faith, then her. I think she's right. Because Buffy is more of a threat to begin with but she is the that everybody wants and needs to kill and so they'll make a big deal out of it. Faith can't really be connected to the Slayer-ness as much anymore due to her turning away from it and then all that followed. So it was Buffy they would kill last. It wasn't a matter of logic really.

In that case it would CERTAINLY make more sense to kill Buffy first. Faith carries the line and she like you say turned away from it. Kill Buffy off before anybody knows whats going on therefore no leader, no army yay!

Simply put, I just figured they'd want Buffy alive after all her friends and allies were dead to rub it in her face before killing her. The phrase 'save the best for last' comes to mind as well.

My theory is that they didn't know Faith was back and out of prison yet... I have to admit it always pissed me off a little how they pretty much treated Faith like a Potential instead of the Slayer she was.

This is the only explanation that makes sense to me. I can accept this one.

Okay this is my argument, just disregard that i dont like Faith.

Buffy was a better fighter, she beat Faith each time they fought. And also why not kill them both? that would get the slayers out of the way and let a less qualified potential be chosen, and then just release all the turok han they wanted?
Also I think because Buffy was still pure, she hadnt killed anyone innocent like Faith did, and that had some symbolic meaning.
Faith just didnt have the reputation of being a saviour, like Buffy did.
Does this make sense? probably not.

Season 7 is a mess. IMO, it's the worst season of Buffy, the Potentials just ruined the season and awesome characters like Faith and Giles were just pushed to the background and basically became wooden props

I know that Joss was planning a Faith spin-off during season 7, so that could explain why the show didn't focus on her. Remember the scene with Faith and Spike? That was a little unofficial screen test to see if Eliza and James Marsters had enough chemistry

I thought that female prison inmate who went after Faith with the knife in AtS was an agent of the First? I mean what inmate carries a knife like that around? I figured that was the First's way of trying to get rid of her.

I'm pretty sure that Faith would have to die for a new slayer to be called. I mean technically Buffy already messed up the line back in Prophecy Girl and I think since then Buffy's second, third, fourth etc death wouldn't have an affect on the Slayer line.

I think the First wanted to go after Faith and all the potentials but it saw Buffy as the leader and the greatest threat so it targeted her.

Accident of birth versus choice. Recall Buffy's words about men having always decided that this was the way but why not instead... You might say that that is the over-the-seasons arc, from first death and rise of Kendra and then Kendra to Faith...so the accident of birth line runs through Faith...but it's not mere fortune of birth but who you are and what you do and so the Buffster does her thing culminating in the Potentials ending the years of those men doing it their way by way of becoming slayers themselves. Faith herself, accident of birth slayer that she is, also makes the point, since she was both evil and good with the slayer strength (as it were)(so what is the slayer strength in isolation but something that could be used to not only save but destroy humanity and so there's some thing more important, that thing that decides to save and not destroy). One would otherwise assume that the dark side of the force knows that there isn't necessarily a compelling reason why only one should be called and since the Buffster always bucked the trend she is ultimately the more dangerous as was shown when she decided that one wasn't enough and gave some others her slayer strength.
