Why was there no other slayer?

When Buffy died at the end of season 5,Why wasn't another slayer born? I have thought about the fact that Buffy died because of mystical forces and maybe that had something to do with it, but I don't see why it should have made a difference. Surely during all the centuries that Slayers existed one of them must have died because of mystical forces, and if that was the case that would mean the end of the slayer line, so I don't think thats the reason.
I also thought it may have been because there was already another slayer in power, but that can't be the reason either because when Kendra died, even though Buffy was still the slayer, Faith came into her powers to replace Kendra.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Well we don't have a official answer, but the main theory seems to be:

Buffy was made the Slayer pre-season 1
Buffy died end of season 1
Slayer line passed onto Kendra
Kendra passed the line onto Faith
So in season 5 the line isn't running through Buffy, but Faith
So only when Faith dies would another Slayer be called

Then there's also the loads of times Buffy says a new slayer will be called when she dies in Season 7.

It's possible Willow slotted Buffy back into the slayer line when she did the resurrection spell, or she created a completely separate slayer line running independently of the old line!

But mostly theory's!

I think Joss himself said at one time that the only way a new slayer would come was if Faith had died. Because he didn't want 3 slayers in the world at that time. [cause really, after the first time, you can't really do a storyline twice].

That quote is interesting. The last time I remember hearing it was at a cast and crew group chat with media between Season 5 and Season 6. It's quoted in different versions around this board if you want to do a search.

Unfortunately it appears to be one of those quotes you can no longer find the original source of the complete quote for, because the site has died. SK8R remembers it with the word "never". I remember it as "probably not, unless the writers could think of a way"

Some people claim they've seen the quote after Season 6, but they can never produce a quote.

I actually have that chat vide on a disc somewhere in my house, I'll have a look around the place!!
Also, one could imagine that Buffy's death was predestined to activate Kendra. So, no matter how often Buffy dies, she will always activate Kendra as a slayer. Just another crazy theory we can probably never prove... unless Joss plans on using Season 8 as an "explain the plot holes" platform.

If we accept Joss' explanation of the Slayer line going through Kendra to Faith, that pretty well ends the discussion. If we define "canon," however, as "whatever Joss wants to do at the time, just as long as he can come up with an explanation for it," we could have a Lost Slayer.

When Buffy died at the end of Season 5, the gang in Sunnydale went to great lengths to conceal the fact, believing that with Faith effectively out of the game in prison, there would be no active Slayer. In addition to taking over the patrolling on a permanent basis, the Buffy-Bot was repaired and used to give the impression that Buffy was still alive, both to the human and demon communities. The Watchers' Council, fooled the same as the rest of the world, believed that there was a living Slayer on the hellmouth, never bothered to perform a search for the newly activated Slayer, therefore the girl would not be informed of her Calling. If this Lost Slayer was located in some remote part of the world, say the jungles of South America or Tibet, word of a suddenly super powered girl would never have reached either the Watchers' Council or the world in general. The end result: the Lost Slayer--one girl in all the world called upon to fight the vampires, the demons, and all the things that go "bump" in the night, but having no idea that she was called, because nobody ever told her about it.

Yeah I always thought was a possibility, it would have been intresting! Or even if the Watchers Council did know of the other girl, but hid her from Buffy and the Gang, since they didn't want her "Learning" from Buffy, and quitting the council!

haha. a council conspiracy. though, wouldn't the council have tried using the new slayer to help defeat the first before the bringers blew up the building? I mean, in a soon-to-be apocalyptic world, it would be stupid of them not to use this new slayer to try to defeat the first.

so im gonna have to guess that this slayer is probably hidden in all the new slayers, not knowing she was a slayer until after willow did the spell in season 7. She probably thought "hey cool, i have incredible strength. Men be damned if they try to touch me."

if, in fact, there was a new slayer called after Buffy's death.

I'm not sure I explained that clearly. First of all "probably not, unless the writers could think of a way", is an impression I have of a memory of a quote. I can't actually link you to it. I've looked for it, and I can't find it. Also it referred to the slayer line possibly going some way other than only through Faith in the future. It did not refer to a slayer being called as a result of Buffy's death in the Gift.

On that Joss was crystal clear. He black and white said a slayer could not be called as a result of Buffy's death in that episode, because the line went through Faith at the time. That quote definitely does exist. Hang on I'll look for it.

Edit

OK, I found it. In fact I found a couple. Did you know there's a staked thread on oft-asked questions in Inside Out?

The thread with the quotes and links on it is here -

Yeah Buffy already died so the slayer line passed from her to Kendra and from Kendra to Faith. So pre-Chosen only Faith's death could activate a slayer, because Faith is THE slayer while Buffy is really a slayer. Buffy is the anomoly because she's suppose to be dead, but she's not. And as far as Season Seven her saying her death would activate the next slayer, one I think that was just talk, because they didn't know about Faith or anything like that, and Buffy was trying to train them and stuff so she simply said "If I die one of you is going to be the next slayer." Instead of "When the other slayer Faith who is currently in jail dies one of you will be the next slayer."

The end result: the Lost Slayer--one girl in all the world called upon to fight the vampires, the demons, and all the things that go "bump" in the night, but having no idea that she was called, because nobody ever told her about it.

this would not have lasted past season 7 though, because when willow activated all the potentials to be slayers, and the gang started searching for all the slayers, they would have found her, and since she didnt know she was a slayer before, she'd be like "ok, so i guess that explains everything", and assume that she got her powers because of what willow did; she'd just be a slayer in the same league as the rest of the potentials, right?

she'd just be a slayer in the same league as the rest of the potentials, right?

Except she'd have two more years worth of experience using her powers... although likely not using them against the forces of darkness.

BTW: Now that we're rehashing this old topic... are we also going to pull out the whole "Buffy died at the end of Season Six, so there's a fourth Slayer" deal?

I must admit I was tempted when I read this.

One wants to remind her it wasn't just Buffy who said the slayer line now goes through her. It was also Dawn, the First Evil, and then there's all that other stuff.

But notice how well I controlled myself, and didn't mention any of that. 😀 LOL.

And what a well-behaved nerd4hire you are!
Yeah but you must also realize that even at that time the potentials didn't really know about Faith so it'd make more sense dramatically to say Buffy, because the reason they were saying that was a way to scare the potentials and let them know how serious this game of slaying is, by basically saying "All I have to do is die and one of you is going to be the next me." Bringing Faith into that equation would make things a hell of a lot more complicated especially with the idea of them thinking she's virtually safe in jail. And I mean if the line really did pass through Buffy there should have been 4 slayers wondering around the Earth at the time of Season Seven, because Buffy died in Season Five she was brought back and then she died again at the end of Season Six when she flatlined and Willow brought her back. So Buffy died 3 times but still only activated one slayer so that should tell you that she no longer carries the slayer line and is the slayer anomoly as she should be dead.

Sorry, CS85. It was an inside joke. You wouldn't get it unless you were an old-time BB-er like me and the Cat.

Basically all this has all been discussed numerous times here. All those arguments have been addressed to death. It been debated so many times many old timers just groan when they see it coming up again.

The core of the theory goes like this - The line runs through Faith until Willow reincarnates Buffy in the Bargaining. At that time a new slayer line is created which may, or may not include Faith, and considers the possibility of a flat-line created slayer, but doesn't really care too much about it one way, or the other.

If you'd like to catch up though. Here's a link to one of the uncountable threads on the subject.

She flat-lined, but does that mean she was necessarily dead? cause when you flat-line, isn't your brain still working for a few seconds, but your heart isn't beating?

Well in that case why did buffy produce another slayer in series one as she must have still had some brain activity or she would have been dead for good

Well if you want to use that argument then she could have had some brain activity when she drowned cause she was somewhat dead then too but she was still considered dead cause she had no pulse and such.
