Why were the visions so harmful?

Why did TPTB made the visions so harmful to Cordelia (before she was part-demon)? Also I've noticed that they weren't as violent with Doyle as they are with Cordy. When Doyle got the visions all he got was a bad headache etc
 
I could be wrong, but I always thought the only reason they were so harmful was because she was only human. Doyle was part demon and therefor better equipped to handle the toll it took on his mind/body.

Well if you think about it, the visions were usually about people in pain or dangerous events so I guess the human mind wouldn't have been able to cope with such intense emotions attacking her at semi-regular intervals. That's what I thought anyway, I'm probably wrong.
 
What everyone said...plus, I think it was a way to add more drama and possibly get Angel to start developing feelings for the damsel in distress. 😉
 
Like [MENTION=10582]brinkster130[/MENTION] said, we know that humans weren't meant to handle the visions and that only someone who was at least part demon could endure them without suffering.

Furthermore, I think it may be part of the tests and trials given to Cordelia. We know from the finale of Ats season 3 that the PTB were testing Cordy throughout, and it's possible that they could have amped the amount of suffering that the visions caused her in order to determine whether she'd be willing to give them up. Refusing to give up her position as "vision girl" is probably the first thing that alerted the PTB to the possibility that Cordy had what it took to be a "higher being." (That was so incredible of her, btw).
