Am I the only one who never got why Faith tried to hostage Joyce? Joyce was always nice to Faith and even wanted Faith to replace Buffy as the Slayer.

It wasn't as much about doing any harm to Joyce specifically as it was that Faith was threatening someone who was close to Buffy, thereby forcing her to do something rash and not very well planned out.. Remember, her whole plan was to get Buffy in a situation where she could use the device that Wilkins had left for her.

Because Faith was so screwed up in so many different ways that I think she pretty much just completely snapped by the time she woke up from her coma in S4. Wilkins was gone, Buffy won the war in S3, Angel was still alive (and not with Buffy, which seemed to really piss Faith off more than it should have) and she pretty much had nothing going for her. That doesn't even touch on the avalanche of mental issues she'd picked up over the years.

She came back, thanks entirely to Angel, but at that point she was just lashing out at anything and everything around her, with a big emphasis on Buffy (who she was always jealous of, and, from the way I saw it, had a bit of a crush on). Joyce was just in the way.

I agree. She was just ready to hurt anyone.
Faith went for Joyce because she knew Buffy would come for her, and as white avenger said Faith's ultimate plan was to get the device that Wilkins gave her on Buffy so she could use it. I don't think Faith cared so much about hurting Joyce; she just wanted revenge on Buffy and took it the best way she could think of at that moment.

Hadn't thought about it as a way for her to get at Buffy though thats a valid point. Thought more of her in terms of her getting back at Buffy by harming those dear to her.
Agree about Joce being nice to Faith. Another reason why I hated that Joyce died, woul have liked to see the two of them become reconciled.
Always felt sorry for Faith because never had a mother that loved her like Joyceloved Buffy.

I really don't think that Faith's plan was to use that device...she had no clue as to what it did. I don't think that she planned for Buffy to crash into that window at that exact moment, she probably did want to stab Joyce and wanted Buffy to find her like that. Buffy did kill her only parental figure, plus Faith was pretty...unhinged. It's safe to say she wasn't thinking rationally. Also she seemed rather unprepared and pretty agitated during their fight. Imo, she would have seemed somewhat happy about Buffy showing because then she could carry out her "plan" to use the device.

However, she knew she was losing the fight and just thought, "Oh, hell" and grabbed the device and bam! That's my theory anyway.

As methodical and inclined to details aw Wilkins was, I'm pretty sure that the device came with instructions, even if we never saw them. It's a safe bet that Faith knew exactly what she was doing with it and was prepared when the change took place
I never really thought about it, I figure just a way to get to Buffy and that she would go after or hurt anyone that Buffy loved

Because she didn't care. She killed a man and her response was 'I don't care.' She wanted to get to Buffy, and she 'didn't care' that she had to harm Joyce to do this.

Her manta was 'want, take, have', which makes it pretty clear that she doesn't care about anyone but herself.

I always felt like she wasn't planning on actually hurting Joyce... just using her as a tool to get to Buffy, as other people have said. She was unhinged, but I think she was aware at how well Joyce had treated her... otherwise, why not hurt her just because, or torture her til Buffy got there?
