Why you should henna your hair AKA we feel so pretty

Presently, I am sitting in my dining room with henna on my hair. Plastic wrap covers my head, and I look like a complete idiot. But no one can see me, so its cool. Haha. It will be a couple of hours until I rinse it out, so to pass the time, I thought I'd share with all of you why YOU should try this.

Henna is completely natural, unlike those smelly, chemical-laden hair dyes on the market. Not only will henna deep condition your hair, it will also add a lovely reddish/auburn tint.

However, you should bear in mind that the application process is extraordinarily messy! Make sure that you wear gloves and cover everything with a dark towel or newspaper as you're applying the mixture to your hair. (If you don't, the henna will permanently dye your sink, walls, etc)

I recommend the Reshma brand of henna. They have a 30 minute version, which means you can avoid having this crap on your hair over night. 😀 All you do is mix the powder with tepid water until it has a creamy, paste-like consistency. Section your hair, and carefully apply the mixture with a small brush (which is included in the box).

Now, cover your hair in plastic wrap (the resulting heat helps the henna intensify the colour) and find something to do for a couple of hours. (Yes, it's supposed to be a 30 minute process, but the colour is more intense if you give it more time to sit)

Okay, it's time to rinse it out. Yay!! Make sure to rinse your hair until the water runs clear. Now, apply your regular conditioner, rinse, and dry your hair. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how shiny and happy your mane is. Not to mention your new, subtle colour. Yeah, you're a sexy thang now!

I seriously urge you to try this. It's somewhat difficult, messy, and time-consuming...but it's totally worth it!!

I got no hair to henna! Whats left is dark with speckled grey, I like it! Hope it turns out well for ya ABK. Does it smell better than a salon? Ever done lemon juice for blonde?

I'm waiting for my hair to go all grey so i can dye it deep indigo blue... otherwise, I have to bleach it, and I don't want to do that. Sadly, I don't think I can find 'natural' dyes in my chosen colors.

It lasts about a month, depending on how fast your hair grows. The colour fades a bit as time passes, but it IS permanent. You should reapply the henna at least once a month. Like chemical hair dyes, your roots will show as your hair grows.

Dying horses don't bear as much negative reason as dying unicorns. Seeing a line of unicorns, now there is a funny sight. Them unicorns used to do what the elephants did, grab hold of the tail of the one in front, which was okay as the tusks were pointing a bit to the side, the unicorns however .. ..OccaQuokka's dying horses seem like a good idea now, don't they!

I already have Second Life for that! I change my hair more often than I change my clothes... always some miraculous color.

@Blaze: Dam, that's why I do the jumpers, we don't fuss over out horses like they do in other disciplines, even at top shows! Or at least we never have at my barn lol

I had a little buckskin filly who near on demanded that sort of attention. She used to pretend she didn't like the make up, but she loved the fuss. Always stood still when we painted her toes and dusted her socks 😀 All my mares all got a hot oil treatment after a clip (A) So did the kids ponies - when the drugs worked well enough to clip the little forkers. My jumping mares manes were so long that I had to braid them, they were seen as dangerous with the length in jump rounds. More care for their hair than mine hehe. Definitely got more brushing than mine!

Today my hair is decorated with rabbit fur. Amazing how it sticks to short hair. Free hair hat!

Haha you have more patience than me. I just roach all my horses' manes for jumping. Last year I did a couple of hunters and had to braid, never again! My show prep consist of a quick shampoo and that's it! Much like my own hair actually! I'm very lazy. One of the main reason I could never die my hair.

My competition mares were Andalusians, I would have been shot hard I hogged their manes! Plus we did breed shows too, full mane required.

For the non horsey folk - this is my breed of choice. No it is not me. I want that pink dress! I had a purple and green dress. I'd love to give the royal another go. Luckily my girls were not grey either! Thats even more of a muck around! Purple shampoo stains... Although the same shampoo we used for white socks also works well for bleached blonde hair, I dont think I would ever go blonde again. The regrowth is a pain, and expensive!

Now I've hogged my head for ease of life. I have done a few hot oil treatments on my own head too, so I guess I do care about my fur as much as the horses.

I remember when I was little, my mom used to put it in my hair once a month. I'm thinking of rekindling that tradition with my little girls. We'll have a henna day together.
