This is something that I missed out on as well. It is really a mystery to me how I started watching Buffy, but I must have seen the show before I really started watching because I always knew that Willow had been straight at one point. I started really watching the show in season six (after I got hooked on Angel) and by that time Willow was already gay. It never really crossed my mind that she must have "come out" at some point, even after I had seen all of season four.

Many view points to consider.
I was seriously disheartened when Oz and Willow broke up...and actually stopped watching from there until Oz came back..so when I saw what was going on between Tara and Willow...I was like..."Um....when did this happen"...of course now I have seen inbetween episodes and saw how it was led up to...but it was a very big shock to me at first.
However, it shouldn't have been.
Like somebody pointed out before, there was much foreshadowing....for an instance...The Vamp Willow of "The Wish" alternate universe....she had very lesbian tendencies...
Also...in season 3...Willow DID NOT like Faith...although there were the obvious reasons why...Willow had an issue with "Faith sharing my people" and the "slayers only attitude"...as well as the fact that Faith and not Will was Xander's first...but I think (and as you get to know me you will come to learn that I think too much) there was a more pyschologically rooted reason...I think Willow saw a reflection of herself in Faith...as in Faith's bi-tendencies...something she was scared of inside herself...
I don't recall the name of the episode, but in s5, the episode where Glory sucks Tara's brain...the fight Willow and Tara had answered alot of questions...in fact...I think the issues that came up in that fight should've came up a lot sooner...
I think Joss should've adressed the "this is not a phase" issue earlier in s5....not till the end...
As for Oz triggering it...that is possible...however...I don't think Oz triggered making her gay...He might have triggered making her REALIZE that she was gay...that is a much more plausible theory...
Tara and Willow's first onscreen kiss was very-well placed and quite well thought out...To have their first kiss be a kiss of comfort in a sever emotional crisis as opposed to a hot steamy "were gonna get it on" kiss made it much more acceptible to the fans...also...how could you expect Willow's girlfriend not to kiss her when Joyce, practically her second mother(from Gingerbread we can tell that Willow shared a deeper connection with Joyce than perhaps she did with her own mother, just as she did with Giles instead of her own father) just died.
And who didn't almost cry at the end of "Entropy"(it was "Entropy" right...after seven seasons keeping some ep titles straight becomes somewhat hard) when Tara and Willow make up..."Can you just be kissing me now?"...antother great tender moment of probably the most beloved couple on BTVS besides Angel/Buffy(In my opinion, Spike/Buffy didn't technically constitute a couple, more like screw buddies)
What I have a problem with is the people who said Joss was homophobic and prejiduce for killing off Tara...first and foremost...NO RELATIONSHIP ON BTVS has ever ended happily...and it would've been even more prejiduce for Joss to break the tradition just because he was dealing with a "gay couple"....
Yeah that's my two cents...even though it reads like a helluva lot more...

Definitely..I first saw s1 s2 then s7,s6 and after some time s4 and 5,but Willow being gay was completely fine by me..
Just to clarify, when I said I was shocked, I didn't mean that I wasn't okay with it, as a gay myself, I was very much okay with it, however, I went from seeing her loving Oz to blowing out candles with Tara, I just didn't expect it.
But believe me, I have many lesbian friends, I didn't have a problem with it, I was simply suprised.

I remember watching Willow start to become gay and I was like "What is going on, is she gay?!" I couldn't believe they made her gay, I didn't have a big problem with it, but it was Willow, sweet little innocent Willow. So I thought it was strange. Why did they make her gay to begin with??

I only started watching Buffy in series 6 so I had no problem about Willow being gay. After watching re-runs I think they did it in a really nice way.

I started watching it after it finished so I knew she was gay. So many points to address. Hmm, what I think worked best about this relationship, and made it possibly the most realistic gay relationship on TV is that it wasn't a 'gay' couple, it was a couple who happened to be gay. They did couply things, they didn't wear dungerees or go to gay clubs, they were who they were.
Joss said that he decided that Willow had to be gay after the W/T relationship, it would be too stupid (not his words) to revert back to straight and it being "a phase".
Xander being gay would of been interesting but I have no doubt we will have seen less. People seem to accept lesbians more than gay men, oddly. Someone in sociology had a theory that men like lesbians because its a way for them to explore homosexuality without looking at gay men and appearing gay (anyway thats another subject).
I love the W/T relationship, it was so sweet and nice that it was hard to hate it (but people still did. BBC getting more complaints about W/T in Seeing Red then attempted rape and gun violence)

I have mixed feelings about the Willow/Tara relationship.
I think that Tara and Willow were a good couple.I was upset when Tara died.
But I loved Willow and Oz!!!I thought they were the best couple!!He was always so nice to her,and he took her back after he saw her kissing Xander!!!I was so upset when Oz left.

i had no problem with willow being gay, but like others have said it would have been more believable (at least to me) if she had been bi, she seemed to have very strong feelings for oz and xander. it was annoying how she said "ok, gay now" (don;t remember the ep).
