So yeah im getting my wisdom teeth cut out this next Thursday! Any tips on what i should do/not do after the surgery from ppl who've done it already?

I hate wisdom teeth. Mine are rotten and infected inside but still not grown out yet. Very painful.🙁 Probably the worst pain I ever had is this toothache that comes and goes.:lmao:

My hubby had his out a few years ago and developed dry socket. Nasty. We're not sure how it happened; he did everything exactly the way they told him to, but still managed to pop some stitches and get infected.

I´m sure they´ll tell you what to do or don´t do. Don´t think you need to worry about it. I miss mine terribly. It´s not like I´m smart as it is and with them gone...

Mine never bothered me actually. But my dentist thought it was a good idea to take them out all the same, since removing them later in life would cost me a small fortune. I had to go to the hospital and get them blown out. Yes that´s right, blown out! Not that I noticed much. Was of course asleep (someone give me the right word please) the whole time. Got home with a cheek swollen beyond imagination. Ok, I don´t think it was really that bad, but it sure felt like it could burst any minute. But since I was drugged at least it didn´t hurt. Two trips all together, one side at the time. Good times. 🙂

sounds like fun ;)
I don't actually need my wisdom teeth taken out even though they're rotten. They were rotten before they started growing out so when they eventually appear they just fall out really easily. But the pain I get from time to time is unbelievable!

Mine aren't out yet. My teeth have always been slow to come in (I think I lost my first baby tooth when I was 7 or so instead of 4 or 5). They told me 6 years ago I'd have to have them out in a year--but no pushing or breaking or anything so far. Oh, and I'm lucky--I only have 3. 🙂 But I may never have to have them out. That would be awesome.

Thanks.
Sorry i don't have a clue. Im 17 and i still have the majority of my baby teeth! I only have five adult teeth! One of my wisdom teeth has just started coming through and it kills though! I have a very low pain threshold... it hurts like hell!

Well mine are coming up. I went to the dentist yesterday for check up but since it doesn't hurt that bad I didn't mention them and he didn't comment on them in any way so I just figured it's alright. I hope I don't need them removed, because I don't want that pain everyone is talking about.

Oh, and try in any case to avoid dry socket. Not nice from what I've heard. Ways to prevent it include no smoking, no drinking through a straw and not spitting out water too intensly. I wikipedia-ed that yesterday, lol.

I could be cruel and say "Don't plan on eating any peanut brittle for awhile," but instead, I'll just tell you something that's probably already very obvious. If the Dentist gives you a prescription for pain, get it filled and use it as directed. If you wait until you're actually hurting before taking it, you can probably plan on suffering for as much as an hour or more before the medication gets its job done.

Also, if you can find it, listen to the Bill Cosby routine about going to the dentist. Believe me, it will help. You might even find yourself trying to keep from laughing while your Dentist is working on you.

I had mine taken out a year ago *all 4 =/ * but the doctor will let you know the do's and dont's for it, i wasnt allowed to eat anything that may be greasy or fatty, jello became my friend, spoons my enemy, and i drank soup through a straw. not the best two weeks of my life but hey lol if your are fully knocked out during the surgery when you wake up you might be emotional or laugh or cry, not cause it hurts just cause the anesthesia messing with you.You might want to prepared to get calle chubby cheeks or something like that lol Good luck

My wisdom teeth came in just fine, I haven't had them removed. One came in in seventh grade, oddly, and the other three came years later. It was weird, and it took forever for them to finish coming in, but now they don't hurt and my other teeth only shifted a little.

Glad I didn't have to get them taken out.

I had mine taken out in the chair, not sedated (except for the valium I had before I went in 😛 otherwise I would have chickened out!) Still had the numbing stuff though of course! I could only have 2 out at a time due to having it not done surgically so I had to have the first lot out on one side then the next two a fortnight later.

I think it was great that way. Mine had come through so it was really just a matter of the dentist yanking them out (and I mean YANKING! He was standing over me on the chair pulling haha) It was good that only one side at a time was healing though cos I could still chew properly with the other side while it was healing. I had minimal swelling and pain and went back to work straight from the dentist (where I got smacked in the head by a stupid horse, I think my face swelled more because of that then the actual teeth!) I only had over the counter meds for pain when I went to sleep as I move alot in my sleep. I rekon if you ever have the choice, get it done in the chair as it is so much better!

I had quite a few friends who were knocked out to have it done and I have all sorts of horror stories which wont be helpful so I wont tell ya. You might get sick from the aesthetic so be prepared for that, also my mates had serious bruising on their faces and chests (apparently the dentist knelt on their chest). I rekon invest in a few bags of frozen peas to put on your face, and then when they thaw out you can eat mushy peas 😀 Dont smoke (I still did but had no probs) and dont eat crunchy things that might get stuck in the holes. Also drink lots of water but dont swish it in your mouth or anything.

Goodluck, I hope all goes well for you 🙂

My hubby had a bad anesthetic experience. Not pretty.
Oh holy hell in a handbasket! - I had mine out when I was 19. I decided to do it during Thanksgiving break from college, because I didn't want to "miss any class" .... 🙄

I was completely knocked out, & they had to be CUT out. I was a drool'n dribb'lin fool for the rest of the day & that night. I had to suck my Thanksgiving dinner thru a straw... I looked like a chipmunk for a week...

The worst part, tho, is that a piece of tooth - A TINY ITTY BITTY PIECE - got stuck down in the hole & doc couldn't dig it out, so he had no choice but to leave it there. This was over 25 years ago! - and since then, because of that, actually! - I developed TMJ. Tempromandibular Joint Syndrome. That little piece of tooth, thru-out the years, has rubbed & rubbed & made a tiny hole in the ligament in my jaw, causing the friction that makes my jaw pop & click & at times, hurt like a mofo! I've occasionally suffered from *lock jaw* - where it POPPED open & I couldn't close it all the way for a few days...

I went thru treatment for the TMJ for a year about 16 years ago. Tried different things, including a soft-food diet (hey! I lost 12 pounds!) so I didn't have to "chew" so much. That cured me! - until I started eating regular foods again. I *almost* had surgery on it. But the doc explained he would have to *LOP* MY EAR OFF & *fold it over* & go into my jaw from that direction in order to dig that piece of tooth out of that bone, & then sew up the hole in the ligament & then *flip* my ear back over & sew it back on.... OK, first of all - a doctor should NEVER use the word LOP when describing surgery to a patient!!!!...... anyway, I opted to NOT have surgery mainly because there was no guarantee that it would work, but also because LOPping my ear off made me wanna hurl.... :lmao:

Keep in mind that this was 26 years ago & I'm sure they've way increased the technique of the surgery by now! And anyway, you'll probably be just fine, so enjoy your pain pills & make sure you have plenty of milkshakes & don't worry yourself!!!

I dunno . . . they still break your jaw to cure an overbite.
Don't be stingy with the pain relief!! They will probably give you a script for the really strong panadol (like panadol forte or similar) (and if they don't go to the chemist and get some!!!!!) and take it as frequently as you can and try and sleep as much as possible.

Thank you! It went quite well. I didn't get any infections or anything but I still cant eat solid food 🙁
