I'm having an impacted wisdom tooth removed on Monday and I'm quite nervous. 🙁 It'll be in surgery at hospital because it's not out the gums yet, so they'll have to pump me full of drugs and cut open my mouth.

I assume other people have had this done. Is it OK? Would you rather be knocked out first? I have a choice of sedation or full-on sleepytime.
 
Not sure I've ever had anything that bad. It does sound better if you were knocked out first. I hope it all goes well I will keep you in my thoughts. Hopefully you get a senstive dentist too, because that can make a difference. Best of luck🙂
 
It varies. If it's just a simple extraction, it's really no different than having any other tooth pulled. The only wisdom tooth that I have ever had pulled was surprisingly simple, despite all of the horror stories that I had heard. Where the problem comes in is if the tooth's roots are wrapped around the jawbone and have to be literally broken to bits, then removed one piece at a time. Even if it comes to that, you will probably be given pain medication for at least a couple of days, but that's about all.
 
I have to have mine removed too and I'm dreading it 🙁 Sorry, not very reassuring, but people that have had it does say it's not bad. One thing to take into consideration is that you will get a "hangover" if you get knocked out, so some people say the next few days after the operation is worst compared to those who get a local anesthetic. I would personally prefer not to get knocked out, but that might just be because I like to be in control of when I go to sleep lol.

Honestly, the doctors were quicker and easier than the dentist. I had more trouble with the iv than the tooth removal. You'll be great. :)
I never had that but I don't like the sound of it. Given the size of the mouth, given what is liable to be used to take it out. I'd expect nothing less than a general anaesthetic.
Thankfully that is a thing of the past for me, oh the joys of cancer - loosing all teeth.
 
I got all four wisdom teeth removed a couple of years ago. (Two at a time, so I could still chew a little the days after the surgery.)
It was alright, I'd say, but a little bit scary, because afterwards I saw all the bloody surgical instruments. But it wasn't painful. I don't know how much more severe it is in your case, but they also had to cut open my mouth and even had to remove some of my jaw bone. I know how that sounds, and had I known about the bone thing beforehand I would have been much more scared. But the truth is, most of what you feel is the doctor/dentist pushing against your forehead trying to pull out the teeth. The sounds can also be pretty scary. You (ideally) don't feel anything that's going on inside of your mouth. Trying to eat afterwards is a real pain in the ass, though.
Also, you start looking like Don Vito Corleone after your cheeks have swollen up.
 
I had a baby cut out of me whilst awake. I've also had surgery on my ears whilst awake. Being awake is good.

My wisdom teeth haven't come out yet, so I can't really talk about wisdom teeth.

I personally prefer local anesthesia over general anesthesia, as the effects of local anesthesia wear out faster than those of general anesthesia.

If you dread people poking around your mouth for what seems like hours or dread dentists, I'd take the route of getting knocked out.
If the above doesn't apply to you, go and get sedated 😛

Thanks for your posts, guys. Luckily I'm not too squeamish so dentists don't frighten me but I dread the aftercare. I've heard horror stories of dry socket where the blood clot hasn't healed and it gets infected.

My boss said his wife came back to work the next day, though I can't imagine I'd be back to work the next day, especially since I cycle to work and I'm on my feet all day.
 
Of course it all depends on which country you live in, here in Australia the competency of dentists is good and the knowledge base used is good.
I had all my teeth removed one day and after a half hour rest I drove the 40Km. home through the city centre of Perth.
So I hope all goes well for you.

Cheers! Well I'm in Scotland, so pretty high standards of medical care (and luckily costs not a penny). Work makes me mentally and physically exhausted at the best of times. I'll happily trade my dodgy tooth for some time off work 😀
 
Surgery is over!

My arm is killing me where they tried to get the iv in. I got poked 3 times before they gave up, so I had to go ahead with local anaesthetic only. I didn't get high on the government's supply. 🙁

The doctor seemed surprised at how calm I was, I just closed my eyes and let it happen. Amazing that you can feel them cutting your flesh without the pain. What an odd experience that is.

Nope, they just told me to take ibuprofen or paracetamol. It's really swollen and uncomfortable now, I can't imagine being at work in this state.

I think my cycling and level of fitness will work in my favour, in regards to the recovery time. Who knew that nearing 30 I would be at my fittest!

If you were to go to your GP and say it is painful, they would give you something.
Bluebird, so glad it's over and you are okay. Hopefully you can help me though, do you live in America if so does it matter which part of America as you stated, "I can't imagine being at work in this state" would it make that much difference living in New York or L.A.?
But all that aside I am glad you got the suckers out oh, err you are not a vampire - are you?
