I have found my new obsession.
I originally knew "Witchblade" as an OK-but-not-great TV series on TNT. I didn't know until much later it was based on a comic book. Not that I cared -- I've never read a comic book in my life.
But after I got into Joss's comic versions of Buffy and Angel, and decided that I liked comic books after all, I decided I wanted to try something else, and I went with "Witchblade" - I was familiar with the show, and the story was interesting.
The comic blows the TV series out of the water. I have completely fallen in love with it. So far I've only read two trade paperbacks of it, and they don't even start with the beginning, but the series is very interesting - I love the way it's written, the artwork is awesome, I can hear the dialogue in my head as though it's being spoken aloud, and the mythology is very, very interesting.
The series, unfortunately, took the concept and turned it basically into a straight up cop show with a twist. I just bought it on DVD and am watching it again for the first time in years. It's OK, but I have to try not to compare it to the comics.
A movie adaptation is being released next year, which I'm excited for. The comic series has also been adapted into a Japanese manga and anime series which uses only the basic concept.
I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Witchblade - after all, it was a relatively successful TV show, and the comic series is Top Cow's most popular title.
