Wonder Woman

I've never been a Wonder Woman fan, and even if I were would I'd give this film a pass. I'm not interested in paying money to see a performer who supports what's going on in Palestine. The plight of occupied countries is always tragic, especially for the children.
In my opinion that whole area (Middle East) is a little more complicated than that. Depends on how far you go back, historically, most areas could be considered 'occupied'. That could be said about most of the planet, really. To be fair, one could say, that the country you're living in is 'occupied'. So does that mean that you don't support any Hollywood movies? 😛

I don't want to start a war here, no pun intended, but I find it interesting how Americans ( I am an American) hero worship and glorify our soldiers, and in the same breath denounce and hate a woman who was forced to be in the Israel army and hold her personally accountable. We really have no Right
To try to take the moral high ground. Look at what we have done to other countries and the crap wars we have started. And, look at who our President is. We should look to our own failures and embarrassment before we seek to judge anyone else.

Also, we glorified Chris Kyle, the American Sniper and nearly wet ourselves with praise for the movie and who he was. How many women and children did he kill? Then we crucified
His murderer, who surprise! Was also a soldier suffering from mental issues and ptsd from war. But let's boycott and tear down Gal Gadot. Makes sense.

I have a feeling I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this post.

Frankly, I'm not interested in debating the issue. I've already stated my views on the topic, and I stand by what I've said. So there. 😛

was just putting a little perspective on it :)
That is true, but this sentiment still describes me after watching the movie:

That's great! It does make me wonder, though... Didn't you feel the same way after watching, say, 'Iron man'? See, I always thought that gender really doesn't matter to characters - I can relate to Willow just as much as I relate to Xander. But maybe there IS some difference there...

#feminism

Absolutely. But also #Storytelling - Steve Trevor was one of the best things about this movie, while Jane Foster, for example, was one of the weakest part of 'Thor: The Dark World', due to how flatly she was written. Love interests need to MATTER, if they're in a movie. It's just better for the movie.

It was all of that but, to me, it also felt contradictory in the sense that the writers were trying to make several points but gave up halfway through.

Hmm. That's possible. Honestly, by the climax, I was so put off by the cliches, that I might have missed some of those contradictions.

I don't think it's a conscious thing, but yes, representation does matter. I often feel empowered by female characters I admire and look up to, but not by male characters. In fact, what I like about my favorite male characters and what I like about my favorite female characters is actually different.
And yes, I relate to Angel more than I relate to Buffy, but seeing Angel be a badass never inspires me to be a badass, while seeing Lilah be a badass makes me go "YES! Amen to that!". So, gender matters. And no, I didn't feel the same way after watching Iron Man. The thing is, women lack good representation in movies and TV. We're used to being the love interest, the eye candy - things most women can't actually relate to - but we're not used to seeing ourselves in truly important roles, often played by men. Naturally, it's pretty exciting when instead of being sexy Scarlet Johansson - a hero of little relevance surrounded by the big guys - we get to be the lead of the movie, in league with Batman... that's kind of awesome...and empowering....It's like, finally!!!

I don't get the dislike for Gadot's performance. She doesn't have the greatest acting range, but for this part she doesn't need it. She plays a powerful, smart, passionate and forward thinking woman convincely. She's probably never going to win any acting awards, but I think she's perfect for this role and does a good job.

I've heard a lot of positive responses from young women. Any film which counters the gender balance and gets young girls inspired by a mainstream film is a good thing in my book.

Ok, so I saw this last night and overall I liked it very much. Comparisons to Captain America: The First Avenger aside (and there are many!), I thought it was beautiful to look at (Themyscira especially) but it didn't shy away from the horrors of war either. I thought Gal Gadot was the perfect mix of innocent naivety as a sheltered Amazonian princess and a total bad ass warrior, who's emotional and compassionate but never weak because of either. Chris Pine was much better than I thought he would be and gave Steve Trevor some awkward character and heart. I especially loved the scene on the boat, which I've since found out was completely adlibbed by Gadot & Pine on set. Their chemistry together was a lovely surprise.

Couple of minor gripes - the last third of the movie does drag a little with the final battle scene, Robin Wright & Lucy Davis aren't in it nearly enough considering how prominent they've been in the marketing and while the Amazonian warriors are amazing, a great mix of all women of all ethnicities, sizes and professions, they're just not in it enough (which is understandable as you want to get the story going, but still, it's sad we don't see more of these women!)

One thing I really liked was that this film was clearly shot not to titillate a male audience. When you see Diana, the camera isn't focused on her breasts. Sure, she has an amazing figure and the outfit is revealing once it is revealed, but even mid-fight, it never lingers on her breasts. Also, the fight scenes are well choreographed, but the constant use of slow-motion in the scenes does get a little jarring for me after a while. Yes, these women are kick ass, we don't need a constant barrage of slo-mo shots to prove it.

This is not just a great female-led and female-directed superhero movie, this is a great movie full stop and while it does have a few minor issues, and is a little over-expositiony at the start, I really hope this is the start of a new chapter of the DCEU. But most importantly, I hope the fatcat Hollywood executives realise that fans do want to see women in these sorts of movie roles, and hopefully this will pave the way for more quality female-led movies. I'm looking at you, Marvel. Greenlight Black Widow already!

Really good review and I pretty much agree with everything. The ending is the main link. Its a bit heavy handed and dragged on. Though it was beautifully shot, just a bit preachy and full on.

Its a bit of a shame that Wonder Woman is just going to become a bit part in the Justice League film, rather than appearing in a follow-up film of her own.

Ta - maybe I should muscle in on the film review market? (Ha ha, only joking, I'll leave that to the professionals!)

Wonder Woman 2 has been confirmed, but Patty Jenkins has not (yet!) confirmed her return - Wonder Woman 2 is happening

That's good news. Just think it should happen before this Justice League cluster ****😉 Its funny how this was Jenkins first film as director since 2003. She was the perfect choice and it would be a blow to lose her.

Now that I've seen this I do wonder (excuse the pun!) what Patty Jenkins could have done with Thor: The Dark World. She was originally down to direct it but left due to 'creative differences'. Rumour has it that Natalie Portman was so upset at Jenkins leaving the project that she wanted to leave too, but had to be reminded she was contracted and was essentially forced to complete the movie. She's since said she's done with Marvel and with Jane Foster and has never completed her three-movie-deal with them. 😉

I think Justice League will be ok. I hope. 🙂

Well, it's rated a 12A here, meaning a 12 year old can go see it, and under 12's if accompanied with an adult.

I mean I know it's up to a parent's discretion, but just because an adult can take a 6 year old to see a 12A, honestly why would you want to? It's 12A for a reason. I presume it's PG13 in the US.

I'm not saying it's "right", just that 12A is the rating. So "teens" and "young adults" CAN legally go watch it.

Yeah sorry, it was more of a rhetorical question rather than me thinking you agreed with taking a 6 year old yourself.....

I go to so many 12A movies and see little kids in the screening, and I'm just like "Why?! Take the evening off, get a babysitter ma n pa!" 🙄

Lol my parents brought me to see Austin Power when I was maybe 10, I can only imagine what people in the theatre thought
More money, innit. Superhero movies make massive amounts of money from young kids. My other half's little boy is obsessed with Marvel and DC, so he will no doubt be going to see Wonder Woman with his mum. He's eight.

I agree. The last battle went on like a run on sentence, with a few small pauses, but no break in between the two fights. I really liked Lucy Davis! I want more Amazonians!

Greenlight Black Widow already!
Yes! But next we're getting Captain Marvel. My favorite is actually Scarlet Witch.

Its a bit of a shame that Wonder Woman is just going to become a bit part in the Justice League film, rather than appearing
well that's the point of the Justice League, they're all together. Wonder Women stole the movie in Batman v Superman. From the trailers I think Aquaman will steal the show in JL. I'm not optimistic about JL but I think it will be better than BvS.

I presume it's PG13 in the US
Yea it is. There were quite a few kids at the showing I went to. I think all the adult stuff will go over there heads, and there's no blood really in the violence. But I'd take my 14, 12 and maybe even 9 year old nieces to go see this movie. I think it's positive for young girls to see a female superhero like WW who is very different from the ones we see in Marvel so far. I watch Supergirl, but WW is the better character, there's little internal moral conflict in Supergirl, which is what I liked about WW.
