Buffy was unique among Slayers in that she had a team. The dynamics were flying left and right among the Scoobies and company.

Friendship and romance aside, who worked best with Buffy in getting the mission accomplished.

remember the mission is the main thing...

I think Willow. She was a consistent support to whatever mission Buffy was working on her contributions were often effective and several times vital. Even when she was nervous and doubtful she gave it her honest best.

Buffy nearly always felt Willow was on her side, she trusted her, and came to her repeatedly with requests for help that allowed Willow to use her own creativity and input. Willow's research and witchcraft were flexible, and effective. They were a great support and back up to Buffy's leadership and physical strength.

Both Will and Spike are pretty sharp and can do R&D and both are good at fights. Will can use wicked combat spells (even if Buffy uses Spike manly as muscle and Will for research.)

But i also think Willow is the ideal option. Spike (and Riley) would not question her orders and offer constructive criticism.
Or maybe in the comics Spike does do that?

Spike. In the end everyone turned on Buffy except Spike. If you look at what is happening in season 10 it is clear it is always Spike who Buffy can depend on. Everyone else has human needs and desire, Spikes only desire is Buffy.

Willow (and occasionally Giles) for brains, Spike for brawn.

I think it depends on the season. But I would also go with Willow, Spike, or Giles. Look a season 2 - Spike helped her fight Angelus and Dru (for his own reasons). Giles gave Buffy faith in herself by refusing to be disappointed in her. Willow resouled Angel - a good thing - in time for him to go to hell for a century. A bad thing.

Spike for the win here?

Willow was so good that Giles relied on her a number of times to help out.
I thinks that makes her unique in that sense.

Is it fair to say that certain people are part of the crack team that Buffy couldn't do without. I mean, eventually nearly everyone plays a critical role, but some of those roles are interchangeable, they could have been handed off to someone else.

Willow and Giles couldn't be replaced. I think Xander could have been.

Giles
I think what he says to ben at the end of season 5, and then what he does. It's exactly what needed to be done but she couldn't do. I don't know if willow or xander could have done it, possibly spike but he was chipped at the time.
Giles helps her out not only with slaying missions but personal missions as well.

It's helps a lot if a Slayer has by her side someone strong to back her up, someone with magic skills, and someone that is an expert on things that go bump in the night.

Willow is a powerful witch and good at researching, and Spike has the fighting skills and she always can count on him (even when they were enemies she accepted a truce, because she knew he could be useful), so I would say both; but magic is something very handy... and Buffy and Willow always had their friendship to make things work even better.

I like how Giles was talking to Ben about just how much of a hero Buffy was in not killing him in spite of everything.
You could feel how much Giles cared for Buffy when he said unlike me she a true hero before killing Ben.

Willow. Brains to Buffy's brawn. Ensouling Angel (twice), infiltrating the Mayor's office, magically brain-scrambled Glory, brought Buffy back from the dead twice, did that whole thing with the scythe.

Yeah, Buffy's boyfriends just do what Buffy does, only not as well. 🙂

This is why I ship them...😉
