Probably been a thread for this already but I can't be arsed finding it LOL.

Well I'm going to say surprisingly Star Trek and Doctor Who.

You all know my issues with DW fandom. It's too insecure because of the bullying the show got in the 90s and will therefore sell the show out to any fad, and will develop a cult like worship of anybody that makes it keeeeewwwwwlllllll that in the worst cases makes the Family from the Omega Man look fair and measured.

However Star Trek is a new one for me, as for the last few years I thought it was good. In fact I wanted Who fandom to be more like it because Star Trek fandom is extremely confident. (Hence why a Beastie Boys track being played in a trailer for a ST movie is enough for them to get angry that it's not like Trek, as opposed to some who fans who actually defend the Timeless Children that destroys every single aspect of the Doctors character.)

However getting back into Lost in Space actually reminded me that Trekkies are complete snobs and assholes to other sci fi series. Now this is more Original Series fans to be fair. Still Star Trek TOS fans have always had a terrible habit of shitting on other series and franchises, making out that Star Trek is the thinking man's sci fi as opposed to the one idiots like.

Lost in Space was terribly bullied that way, and like I said it's reputation never recovered. As I've been over Lost in Space like it or hate it, deserves credit as the first proper sci fi comedy on tv, and the one which paved the way for all the others. However Trekkies constantly shitting on it and writing in their books "Star Trek was the first show to take sci fi seriously unlike that awful Lost in Space." Have really f*cked it over in the long term, so that even when shows like Rick and Morty and Red Dwarf do things in the modern age that Lost in Space did in the 60s and get praised for them like Pickle Rick, then Lost in Space is still shat on as the disgrace to sci if unlike Star Trek.

Similarly Space 1999 also suffered from this, (James Marsters humorously mentioned doing this to Space 1999 as a Trekkie in the 70s, only for Charisma Carpenter to remind him that his onscreen girlfriend and friend Juliet Landau was Martin Landau's daughter LOL) as did Star Wars, though it was too big to bring down unlike the other two. Still it's worth noting that a lot of the rivalry in the Star Wars/Star Trek fandom comes from Trekkies. Look at Simon Pegg's obnoxious comments recently about how the Trekkies have always just been more progressive and more intelligent than Star Wars fans, hence why they could accept female and non white heroes more easily.

Ironically Doctor Who is the only one that Trekkies seem okay with. I think it's because DW fans whilst terrible to their own supposedly favourite series, by and large are brilliant with other sci fi series. DW fans by and large have never shat on Blake's 7, Red Dwarf, Gerry Anderson series, or American genre shows like Xena, Buffy and Star Trek to the same extent that Trekkies have to their rivals. I think maybe because DW has such a wide range, it has drawn from all of these shows at different point and so Whovians have to kind of acknowledge them LOL.

Still either way DW fans and Trekkies have always got along. There's a rivalry sure, but it's a friendly one. It may have also helped that a lot of DW actors are big Trekkies. Even then though I can't help but feel that sometimes the friendship with this fandom is a bit more one sided from Who fans. They are certainly the ones that push it more than Trekkies do who can still sometimes look down on even classic DW of all things as not being as sophisticated sci fi as much as theirs.

For me the Buffy fandom is the best, and I'm not just saying that because I'm on a Buffy board LOL, I'd say the same on any forum. Buffy fandom has enough confidence in the show to the point where I don't think it would ever let schiesters "smash it up" and buy into bullshit like "Buffy has no canon because they got the year of Spike's birth wrong in two episodes, so that means I can rewrite every single part of her character." Yet they are also quite welcoming to other franchises too, and have never really shat on other series to big the Buffster up. The only time they did that was admittedly to Twilight in the 10s, but to be fair to them that didn't last and EVERYBODY shat on Twilight. Hating on it was the number 1 hipster, jump on the bandwagon fad of the 2010s LOL.

Of course these fandoms don't reflect on the quality of the shows themselves, and when I say fans I don't just mean random people who like them, but the official, elite side of fandoms. Although I do hate to say that at certain points the fans did put me off both shows. Years ago when I was a teenager I went through a period of not liking Star Trek because I kept seeing stuff about how shit these other shows are compared to it, that ironically made me notice the flaws in Star Trek more. Where as before I would have just written off the campy episodes as quite charming in a 60s way, now it was like "seriously, you guys rip on every other sci fi show and then do a space hippies episode?" Meanwhile as you know the unpleasant experiences I had with DW fandom caused me to fall out of love with it a few years back for a short while, but thankfully I put both behind me and can appreciate them both as the classics they are.

Still it should serve as a lesson to other fandoms I think never to be too cocky or too lacking in confidence.

My goodness, I did not know Juliet Landau was Martin Landau's daughter!
Star Wars. It is the biggest and the most toxic. I don't really have to explain why. It's everywhere these past ten years.

I hear that Gallifrey Base is a very toxic cocktail of 'woke' Doctor Who fans. It wasn't as bad when i was on it back in 2008 - 2009 but it's apparently a wasteland of political rows now.

Curious to know what the majority of 'The Walking Dead' fans are like. Don't think there are any liberalized elements in TWD.

Oh it is trust me. Funny thing is though one of the guys I rowed with the most on GB I later met on twitter and we became great friends LOL. Shows you how toxic the atmosphere was.

Even the Twilight fandom shits on twilight, that was half the appeal of it! It was absolutely the most fun fandom, it burnt so bright it burnt itself out quick.

I stay in a very small safe corner of the Supernatural fandom. My real life friends are into it, so that makes it simple. Would probably not engage with the fandom at large.

Im still new to The OA fandom... The only place I can find anyone to chat to about it is on reddit. But reddit in general kinda freaks me out. So I duno about that. Yet.

I've never truly been a part of another fandom other than the Buffyverse, I found this one when I was 13 and it's just been enough for me since. I watch Doctor Who youtubers and post on that Reddit forum sometimes but my involvement in the fandom is a lot more casual than my love for the show, Doctor Who is my third favourite show of all time behind Buffy and Angel yet I'm not really a part of the Whovian fandom (but I love the name so I would call myself a Whovian for fun). Ultimately I mostly like to talk about Doctor Who with Buffy fans on here.

Yeah I always thought the Buffy vs Twilight stuff was cringey because Twilight isn't even a real opponent to Buffy so it felt beneath the fandom to pick on it 😄

Yeah and its also hypocritical of Buffy fans to moan about it making vampires romantic and cheesy. Angel is arguably creepier than Edward given he chased Buffy at a younger age, and from a far, whilst no vampire has ever done anything as cringe inducing as this.

Note for the record I DO think Buffy/Angel had a much better take on vampires than most other series, but still to pick on Twilight for that is a tad hypocritical LOL.

While I think a case can be made for this, a little girl had me read book 1 and I can't agree. That was way creepier, even more so than Spike in later seasons. There's a brilliant Buffy vs Twilight worth seeing, including on YT (see the longer one).

Yeah but Buffy had a lot more to it than just the vampire love interest stuff whereas that was Twilight's whole thing, but to me it was mainly just something that 12 year olds would and did enjoy so that's fair enough and it shouldn't be picked on.

A prison guard told me Twilight was popular among the serial rapists and murderers at the prison she worked at. After reading the first book, can't say I'm surprised it would appeal to them as tweens (and mothers who wish they still were teens)

If Spike did the things he did in S5 and was an ugly demon, you can guarantee everyone would be going, 'ew he's gross and creepy!', but he's attractive and it's, 'aw, he doesn't know how to deal with his feelings..'

Yes, I have issues with where they took Spike's character in s5 and beyond.. 🤣

I miss s2-4 Spike...
Sure, he was a monster, but he was a fun one. Not a creepy abusive stalker.
Shippers who ship characters the producers clearly never had any interest in pairing up, and people who love a book based property, but don't bother to read the book. Yes, the adapted work should stand on its own, but you can't fully understand the work with reading the original.

After getting piled on by Trek fans more than once over some observations that I didn't think were that big of a deal (along with a few unrelated factors) made sure I never joined a Trek fan board, despite that I'd like to discuss (and invent/share head canon) over a few subjects. I'd probably give Nu-Trek more of a chance if I did (or maybe that would alienate me all the more from it, don't know and it's moot).

You could try and find Trek fans in the wild maybe they're calmer
P.S. Okay, if the actors put a romantic subtext into their performance, one that neither the writers nor the producers intended, and you as the viewer pick up on, and push for more of that, that's fine. That's not what I am annoyed by.

It's also best to think of Star Trek as a secular religion, and the IP holder as the trustee of important relics over just a collection of copyrights. After all, without the fans, Star Trek dies after the second season. With the fans, DeForest Kelly is one of the highest grossing actors of the 1980s.

Like Fuffy?
Re: Fluffy; I was thinking more Riker and Troi from Next Gen, who played ex-lovers, and were never directed to portray the characters as such, but always added romantic "embers" to their performance. Troi and Riker were explored in novels, but never on the show until the movies.

In re Fluffy. I would generally write that off as Joss wanting his dolls to kiss and rub each other's feet, but YMMV.

Doctor who fans are often nerdy and passionate but good, fun people usually.
Harry potter fans likely the same but maybe make more casual references in everyday situations but I haven't met that many.
I would imagine Reality Tv show fans are likely the worst but I haven't stayed active in any other fandom than Buffy.

Star Trek and Star Wars fandoms are the worst, for the record. They always want to argue about silly things. I'm a big Star Trek fan, but I don't spend hours online arguing about whether or not a Klingon Bird of Prey could take out a Romulan Warbird. 😄 And for the record, that battle would be a tie since both ships have a cloaking device and are equally matched weapons wise. Just saying.

Doctor Who fans are mostly okay. Farscape fans are AWESOME. Game of Thrones fans are okay (except for the ones who've read the books and continually brag about how much THEY know) Buffy and Angel fans are okay...unless they're hardcore shippers. 🧛

I personally never found Riker and Troi interesting - there was more sexual chemistry between Kirk and Spock!

I have only been on the Rockstar INXS, Rockstar Supernova and Buffy Boards and the first two were interesting. After the death of Michael Hutchence, INXS went the reality TV route to finding a new frontman. The fandom started immediately and had a general discussion as well as a page for each singer plus the house band and various other people such as presenters Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke. This fandom was a bit more out of control than the Buffy Boards but while not always civil, it was great entertainment. The Rockstar Supernova fandom went bananas. IXS but eventually degenerated to the extent that someone started a new board that was invitation only (I was invited and I did join). One item I remember from Rockstar Supernova is that people were commenting on other posters more than about the show. The mods had to police a lot of this and you would sometimes sign on in the morning to a 5-page thread and in the afternoon, the mods would have pared it down to two pages. I remember one thread where someone said that one guy who lived about 6 km west of me in Mississauga was supposedly having a torrid affair with a single mother in Auckland NZ. I attended some of the events held by my favourites (Suzie McNeil for INXS and Storm Large on Supernova).

I still like all of the fandoms that I joined.

The ending of Supernova pissed me off. Didnt like that little emo guy and he was basically anointed the winner with several weeks left to go.
I'd like to point out that Battlestar Galactica and Farscape fans are the best. I've rarely seen them argue and snipe about those shows. Mainly, they (we, I should says) just discuss what's going on with the characters, etc. Differing opinions don't break out into full scale bloodbaths, like a few other shows. Oh! Like Charmed and Supernatural. 😄 I swear to God, if you tell a Destiel shipper that there IS no romance, and the entire concept of Dean and Cas is disgusting....well, the battle ensues. And Cole/Phoebe shippers border on violence if you even hint that their romance was somewhat abusive.

Game of Thrones fans are okay (except for the ones who've read the books and continually brag about how much THEY know)
Those fans were the worst! Back in the day, they would go on IMDB or AV Club threads and gleefully tell spoilers, or give such broad hints that you could easily figure out the spoiler. When people complained, they'd loftily say, "It's your own fault if you haven't read the books." On TV show websites!
