so UGO made a list of worst episodes ever of a few tv shows (like veronica mars, the office, heroes, BSG, etc) but here's which episode was chosen for Buffy: and the loser is...

season 4, episode 5; "Beer Bad"

"Beer Bad" is a befuddling low point in an otherwise excellent season of television. It's hard to believe the same people who created "Hush" - a successful experiment in nearly-silent television and one of the best episodes of anything, ever - created this beer bomb. It's ham-fisted, preachy about things I don't think Joss Whedon is even actually concerned with, and... just not that entertaining.

Buffy is treated badly by a love interest at college (like most college kids at some point) and nurses her wounds with too much beer (like most college kids at some point), turning into a total neanderthal (like most college kids at some point). In Buffy's case, the transformation is literal. She literally becomes a cavegirl through warlock-cursed beer, which means she loses her hairbrush and the articles of her sentences. Get it? It's a metaphor! So, kids, don't drink beer when you're away from home for the first time - especially if you're doing it to escape your problems - or your hair will look terrible.

I think that's what we were supposed to get out of "Beer Bad." God knows I didn't learn anything else.

so what do y'all think?? is "beer bad" the worst episode? because in my opinion, i really like this one. it was pretty comical, and there are definitely other episodes throughout the series that i feel are far worse that this one. like, oh say, "doublemeat palace" or "teacher's pet", "some assembly required", or something along those lines. i think every episode has something good about it though, and even the worst episode on this show is probably like 10 times better than some of the stuff on television today.

my favorite art in "beer bad" was at the end when buffy hits parker over the head and knocks him out, the others surround him, look at him for a second then walk away-- xander having to help buffy with the right direction. it's just a really funny moment! 🙂

I agree. Sure, Beer Bad isn't riiight up there in the top ten, but in my opinion, it's enjoyable enough to definitely not be the worst episode ever.

I liked cave Buffy. When she threw the fire extinguisher at the fire? Classic.

i gotta agree with you,I love beer bad. its funny and has all those good scenes, i guess every ones intittled to their opinion on the ep but to me, its one of those that make you laugh and is good,

i also have to agree with the there really not being a complete worse episode. Even the ones that arent your favorite have something that you love.

or what about xander going "rough day? you wanna talk about it" throughout alot of the beginning of the episode, and then when it comes time for him to use it when a girl at the bar is like "god, i've had the worse day, you got a light?" and xander holds up a 'no smoking' sign. haha! its so funny.

i mean, i wouldn't rate this episode at the top of my list of best episodes, or even favorite episodes... but it definitely doesn't deserve to be the worst.

oh, i love those xander scenes, BuffBuff 🙂. those are probably my favourite parts of that one. 'beer bad' as a whole though is certainly far from my favourite.

what i have to say on this topic is that though there are certainly episodes that are not as interesting as others to me, as BuffBuff said, they all have some appeal. in angel, there are about 3 episodes i always skip due to my dislike of them. i never skip any buffy episodes. there's always some kind of goodness there.

and also, to anyone who agrees that 'doublemeat palace' is bad, the first two times i saw it, i really didnt like it either. however, that changed after the third time, and i really love it now. i guess it depends on what you love about episodes, for instance, what couples you like, or if you like ones that are more action based, or have more epic scenarios. i like 'doublemeat palace' because i like hallie, and it is her first appearance, i like all that anya/xander stuff, there were a lot of funny bits, i like willow and i like the stuff with her and amy, etc. what im saying is, even though i find the plot not-so-great, i still really like this episode.

I really like beer bad. I didn't at first it took a couple of watches but I believe Superstar is the worst. I can't even watch it. And it's the only one I can't watch.

I kinda agree with UGO to be honest, I mean Beer Bad is definitely one of the worst Buffy eps I've seen so far. The plot seemed really stupid and it was pretty dull throughout, the only thing I liked at all about it was the humor in a few parts.

However Superstar, like TabulaRasa said, wasn't that great either. Though I did like the modified intro, the episode itself wasn't that great. The 4th season had a couple of duds.

Yep, as epidodes go 'Beer Bad' was good.
The worst episode would be the last of season 7, mainly because it was the last one.

yeah! gotta agree there :)

yeah, i totally know what you're saying. for some of the episodes in the series, i really didn't like them. i was just like 'geez, these really kinda suck. this was just a stupid plot'. but that was at the first viewing or so of them. then i started looking deeper into the episodes, at their meanings and such. like you said (and what i said up above) there really is something in every episode that makes it good, even if its only a small thing. and the plot may not always be up to par, but something that a character does or says, or how they interact with another character/situation will make it good.

I really like beer bad. I didn't at first it took a couple of watches but I believe Superstar is the worst. I can't even watch it. And it's the only one I can't watch.

aww... TR, really? 'no' to "superstar". i like that episode. at first, i REALLY didn't. but after several viewings i've come to really enjoy watching it. i just think it's hilarious that the universe revolves around jonathon. i love how xander is pretty much in love with him, that giles has a swim suit calendar of him, the whole anya and her shrimp alternate reality explanation and buffy getting irritated by her not saying it right. i love when he sings the "serenade in blue" song (though it's not really him), then when he plays the trumpet X/A go off to have sex... haha, i just really like alot of aspects about that episode!! yeah, okay, the plot was pretty lame, and so was the monster (and poor tara for getting attacked), but still, it had alot of comedy to it. i especially loved the fact that it completely throws the audience off, and you're like "wait, what? jonathon? when did that happen?"

Uhh....Where the Wild Things Are I would class as worse than Beer Bad. "Poltergasm" and Giles singing aside...could have done without that one. Doublemeat Palace definitely on the lower end of my favouritism of eps as well...and Living Conditions...but that's mainly because I really dislike Kathy.

Beer Bad is very bad.
I don't mind episodes with a point, maybe metaphors, but Beer was was just complete preachy rubbish.
I'm pretty sure that Joss was working on Angel on the day this one was passed.

Also this - what is the point of typing this 'worst episode on this show is probably like 10 times better than some of the stuff on television today'?

Its pointless.
Something bad is possibly better than something else - that is all that you've said.

I think what they meant to say is that even the worse episode of buffy is better then some of the tv thats on today, they didnt mean something bad is better then something else, they meant something bad is better then something worse

i dont know if that makes sense or if im just repeating what they said but i dont think they meant it in that way.

Beer Bad *is* the worst episode for me. I have tried watching it several times and it's so awful I cannot make myself finish it. It starts out alright but completely collapses by the fifteen minute mark and there's just no saving it. It's the only episode I can't watch.

I can watch "Beer Bad." I can't watch "Him." Except for the scene with Buffy and the rocket launcher. That almost makes the whole episode worth it. Almost. Thank God for DVDs and scene selections.

Wiccaness, I know exactly what they are saying still doesn't mean its the most pointess statement anyone could make.
Of course the worst episode of something is still better than something else except for that one supreme show where its not and even then you'd still have the charmed fan arguing it has some merit😉

I think they chose rightly in naming it the worst episode but I still wouldn't complain if I was forced to watch it, 'cause afterall, it's STILL Buffy. And, like every episode, it still had highlights and funny moments so I wouldn't really say it was down-right awful.. just not as enjoyable to watch as the others.
