I guess it depends on how you want to look at it:
Just like everybody else, I'm not a fan of Riley. However in a stricter sense, Faith also may be considered to be a bad charcater since she threw the whole story into a chaos.
Everything seemed to be going fine until she showed up.

Between Riley and Faith, Riley caused less stress for the other charcaters since he was of a more stable mind.

I think by "worst character" the OP meant who did you like the least, not who interfered with the characters lives or anything like that. And Faith was a necessary part of the story (or at least, things got good when she arrived), and she wasn't annoying or lame like Riley.

yep, I'm with CDB. the whole point fo Faith's character was to throw everything into chaos. Riley just made things slightly more boring.
don't get me wrong, Riley had his moments, and he was an ok character...but that was it, and ok character. no way should he have been added to the main credits...that place should have been taken by Tara, and yes, i know Amber had her reasons for not wanting to be a main cast member, burt it's just how i feel.

By becoming a 'Title' character Amber became tied to the show unable to do little projects during the season.
She liked playing Tara BUT wanted the freedom to do other things.
Personally I prefer she wasn't in every episode. Made the time she was on that much more important to the story.

Cordelia should have been treated this way in seasons 1-3 of Buffy.
Not because I dislike her character, on the contrary I adore Cordy, but because alot of the time Cordy just didn't belong in the situations.

Was Angel a main character? His character didn't do much while on Buffy. There was that one time when all the magic happened, but other than that he was just kinda there...looking glum.

I just think that Riley suffers from the same problem as Dawn and Connor, in that he was written too well as the type of character he was meant to be.

Dawn is always criticised as being too whiney and bratty when she was created as a whiney, bratty little sister. Connor is called annoying and miserable when that is exactly what they were going for. Riley was supposed to be the boring, down to earth, regular guy character as a total contrast to Angel, which is what people hate about him, for the most part.

To me it just seems a waste of time to dislike a character when they were only serving the purpose in the story that they were created for.
