I'm sure I'm not the only one who was saddened by 'A Hole in the World'. Would a body-switching spell have worked, and moved Fred's soul into someone else? Or would Illyria be transferred into another body? Drogyn said that Illyria could be drawn out of Fred and into every person between her and where the spell was cast, so if it was just two people, would it work if there was only two people in the room?

According to the storyline, by that point Fred's soul had been completely destroyed, as in, neither gone to heaven or hell, just...gone. The only thing in residence in Fred's body, the only thing even keeping it alive, was Illyria's life force.

Good idea, I guess if it would have worked they would have tried it, must be some off-screen convo where they realized it wouldn't work.

Even if it did work, who would they chose? I can't see anyone making the decision to kill someone else (except maybe Wes) to take her place.

In my opinion the ONLY thing that could save Fred is time travel.

Fred's soul was infected so the transfer would leave her body possibly healing her body but whoever the switch goes to I think would be Illyria's new shell destorying Fred's soul again.

No it wouldnt of, freds soul was destroyed... so there was no fred or ever was gunna be another fred.. and for the whole illyria switching bodies deal.. every body she enters would be killing the host's soul thats why angel couldnt make that decision..

Well then how was it still talking, walking, and being Fred? If Illyria had already taken over, how come it still had her memories, and characteristics, and been Fred?

first of all, great thread, i love stuff like this. I always wondered the same sort of thing. Perhaps a necromancer or something with similar powers, like 'Hainsley' who we saw it Just Rewards S5E2, could have moved Fred's soul into another body like he was doing with the demons. In this case, Illyria could have just kept her body.
I always wondered if they could have saved her by time-travel too, but it seems like previous to BtVS season 8, the buffyverse wasn't that big on time travel.
Once again though, nice thread.

Illyria probably retained Fred's memories and personality when she chose to use it, like when Fred's parents visited, and when she "lied" to Wes, the same way that a vampire demon (?) retains its host's memories and personality when it reanimates the corpse. In fact, Illyria in her human shell might be considered to be the same as the vampire "halfbreeds" who she feels so superior to.

My point exactly, thank you. its was her soul that was destroyed, not her brain which held all of the pictures of freds past, but when illyria was first brought into the episodes she even knew that some of freds memories were blocked or hidden or something... and i believe the reason why illyria could changed into fred and be able to be like her was that because illyria was very very powerful and was far more intellegent then humans were so she could "reanimate" the vessel a.k.a (Fred)

Maybe when Illyria was flipping out with the time-travel (in "Time Bomb") she could have brought Angel back with her to a time when Fred was still alive... then Angel could have grabbed Fred and brought her back with them to the present, creating a new timeline in which both Fred and Illyria-in-Fred's-shell-from-the-old-timeline exist. I don't know what kind of paradoxes that violates but so what?

That woulda been the best ending in the world.
What if they did a body switching spell, with Harmony?
That would be interesting.
