Would a Major characters Death Matter?

I would much rather them kill a character off, if, say the actor/ess had to leave, than replace the character with another actor. I hate it when they do that in TV shows. It's what turned me off Dr. Quinn finally (though I'd been wandering off for a bit before that); I turned it on one day and was all "Who the hell is this girl and why are they calling her Colleen?!"

yeah i hate replacing the characters with another actor (they did it in sunset beach, oh yes i watched it and loved it) and in one of Annie's weird daydreams they have a flash back (one of many, many MANY flashbacks) and a different actress was playing Caitlin.... and Annie comments how much the character has changed "Caitlin you sure look different." to the one who's the new actress

omg Sunset Beach, I remeber everything you just said - how good was Annie!
I see four major charecters in Buffy: Buffy/Xander/Willow/Giles. While I would have watched if they killed off the last 3, it would have been hard for them to replace these charecters and keep the same flow to the show. Some charecters are just vital to a show and going on without them would just change the shows dynamic to much.

Its kind of like Charmed. Killed of Prue, a very central charecter to the show, and after that the shows whole tone changed and the show went downhill from there. They tried replacing her with a new sister which worked for some but also turned off a lot of viewers.

I loved SB!

Its like Roseanne with two actresses playing the same charecter (which was hilarous).

But ya unless you are a soap opera, changing actors when it comes to one charecter is horriable imo and would rather much them be killed or just talked about off-screen.

I think the show would have lost a lot of fanbase if they killed Willow off. I mean I personally think Willow and Buffy are the two major major characters. I mean there was even talk to off Xander in Season Seven, but I mean both Buffy and Willow were the only two that appeared in EVERY episode.

Uhm...major characters DID die. Like Cordelia, a very major character, at least in Angel, but also a core Scoobie for some time. And well, the show made it, by I personally think it sucked.

Major characters definately died in Angel, but not so much in Buffy. In Angel the core group was always changing, and it benefited from it somewhat. I mean, by the end, Angel was the only person who was there at the start, but I wouldn't trade Wes and Illyria for anything. On Buffy, however, they built up the group from the beginning. Fringe members came and went, and Tara (although a main character) never quite made it into the core group. First episode we had Buffy, Giles, Willow and Xander, last episode we had Buffy, Giles, Willow and Xander. If one of them (except possibly Giles) had died and didn't come back, the balance of the show would have been severely compromised. Whether this would have been for the best I doubt.

It worked in Angel because of the slightly darker tone combined with the fact that the threat was always there after Doyle. There was always precedent. Joss tried to establish that in WttH with Jesse, but it never really worked. Buffy was a much more optimistic show. "What cant we face if we're together?" and all that. (Although that's not a great example considering what Buffy really meant...but you get the point.) There was always the feeling that the good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, they always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after. Not always the case of course, but it's that general mood that makes eps like The Body really stand out. Angel was never as clear cut, so main character deaths were much more acceptable to the viewer.

They killed Tara, who I definately saw as a major character, and I still liked it.
Me too. There are people "“ also known as members of the "The Kitten, the Witches and the Bad Wardrobe"-boards "“ who think that killing Tara off made Joss into a bad evil man whose name should never be spoken "“ or typed for that matter "“ and BtVS into an evil evil homophobic TV show.

Me though.. I think that BtVS without Willow would have pretty much sucked. Same goes for Spike I think. And I did miss Giles a lot a lot when he went away "“ the wasn't really the same without him.

killing tara was important, and showed how much willow was in love with tara, look what happened, i think it was a positive statement and integral to willow's character development, plus if you're not going to kill someone off because they are gay then thats homophobic, pointing it out either way is, just accept the death without any negative connotations and seeing it for what it was... those people have the problem, not Joss, not us.

I always did find the homophobic comments hilarious. I mean, Joss got tons of ridiculous hate for making Willow gay - sidebar, I just remembered that great apology he posted after Willow and Tara got together - yet he didn't let it faze (phase? What is that word anyway?) him. He kept going with the storyline, and got lesbians kissing and....reading "the volume!" on TV. He then give Tara this great death scene, and makes sure everybody knows just how much everybody loved her in the resultant storylines....and he's homophobic.... I lolled. There will always be this kind of reaction when a loved character dies, but most fans get over it and see it purely for its creative merit.

(Did you see what I did there? Not an off topic ramble at all!)

Edit:

ghostface agrees: Its faze ; )

Thought so! I don't think I've ever actually written or typed it out though, so it looked weird!

Well, if dawn died i wouldnt have minded! but honestly i think i would still watch. I guess the only reason being as to see how their death affected the other characters. When spike died in the last episode i cried alot. but then when he came back in Angel i was like score! and he also wasnt so mushy anymore cuz buffy wasnt around. Anya dying was sad. but i guess it was all last episode stuff so in a way it didnt matter
